Has anyone tried any of the blanks I have listed here. Jiggermaster, Hopper, or Merrick's Sushi blanks?

Use the new concept guide system and you won't have a problem. I built two tuna popping rods using the Smith wrc80p/35 blank which is 8 ft long matched to a Stella 20000 spinning reel and it casts just fine. I use 60 # Jerry Brown Spectra with a very short topshot. I have used the same guide with the NCG placement in the library on a shorter 7 ft phenix blank but the choke guide went past the

I have not used the fuji ferruled reel seat but I was told that when you epoxy it in place, you must be carefull not to get any epoxy onto the cross metal piece where the ferrule locks onto and aligns the tip to the butt. Also, after glueing in the two parts of the reelseat to the blank and to the butt section, care must be taken to see that the overall blank is straight. When you are building

MNSG is what I have been using for this application. I start with the size 40.

My butt wraps always takes me days to finish and I have not had this problem. Never used any other thread than Gudebrods so it may be the choice of thread brands used. I did have one problem with too much tension and the thread broke.

I just installed a Lakeland aluminum 2 piece reel seat with an id of .765. The od of my blank is approx. .550. I needed to build up the od of the blank and chose to use drywall tape/u-40 rod bond epoxy. After installation and waiting for the epoxy to set, I noticed that the butt piece did not align with the rest of the rod and had a noticeable crook in the rod. In other words, the blank is n

Mark, do you carry the mnat in a size 9 with a 12 ring?

I have used the Fugi MNSG exclusively for my tuna spinning rods.

Down locking is my choice. Less chance of your palm moving or loosening the nut or it vibrating loose.

Thanks, that is a good idea. One problem though is that on one of my popping rods, the ring size is a 16 and the nitrides just go up to a 12. I wish that I could use all nitrides on the rods but then again, I need up to a size 40 ring. Perhaps, I need to look at other brands. Anyways, I would be interested to find out if any builders have encountered broken or cracked guides and what was the

I am not sure if this is a problem or concern. We fish with conventional reels that are fished with hollow spectra. Flourocarbon and/or monofilament leaders are connected to the hollow spectra using the " chinese finger trap method" of connection with a small Sato crimp to secure the end of the connection. The Sato crimps are made of soft aluminum material, are football shape and are

That one used to bother me too. My wrapper is basically mostly home made now. I changed out that ac motor to a dc motor and now with a switch, I can change the polarity of the motor so that it will now run in both directions. Still have to reach for that switch though. I plan to rewire the switch and put it next to my foot control. That way, I can change the switch with my foot.

Just curious. How do you break a rod in the butt section by high sticking? Every rod that I have seen broken by high sticking has been near the tip.

I have a Super Seeker SD8 and love it. One thing to note is that not all the super seekers have graphite in them. The SS-SD8 has no graphite and it is a heavy blank.

I don't do split grips much but have one to do soon. I did not think that this would be a problem. I was going to do a butt wrap between the split grips and use winding checks too. Wouldn't using a winding check at both ends solve the creeping of the finish?

I did not find your question to be out of place. I enjoyed reading all the responses as I am still in a learning mode on the "new concept guide placement". Many of my recent builds are exactly as Tom stated....Large spinning reels with short rods. I personally have found that following the NGC method with the choker on the tip works but I always fudge a bit after doing some test cast

I think that the 10 or 12 choker guide will be fine. Your straight edge may be off a bit. I take a string and tie it onto the reel's shaft and tie the other end to the outside rim of the choker guide to get my straightline. Then do your guide placement according to where the string resides along side the blank following the articles instructions.

I've seen other mixers but not sure how the pac bay is set up. Seems to me that you could just substitute the 1 oz cup on the mixer instead of the 2 oz. The cup that is on the mixer serves as the holder. You place another cup on top of it that has the epoxy in it. I suppose that you could just glue in a 1 oz cup into the 2 oz cup. Then the 1 oz cup will fit within the 1 oz cup that is glued

Thanks Tom. I had a chuckle when I read your comment about short standup spinning rods or a bad choice of reel on the rod... I just acquired another spinning reel that I am building a very short rod for. The reel is a Stella 16000 and the blank that I have chosen is a phoenix 5'8" rod that is rated 30-60 lbs.line test. Looks like this is going to fall into that exact category of rods

Yes, 1/4 inch flat brushes w/ natural bristles. I just briefly clean my brush with denatured alcohol and then it soaks in a bottle of denatured alcohol. I use a empty gudebrod color preserver bottle with a portion of the tip cut so that the stem of the brush will fit into it. Then the cap along with the brush goes into the bottle filled with denatured alcohol. Change out the alcohol once in a

Thanks Tom. It's really a learning experience to read the article and follow it through. It's on paper so that I can refer back to it while away from the work bench. I also have a drawing of the straight line from the spindle to the choke and measurements along the way in 2" increments just to see the lay out and how it works. Btw, I used a string tied to the spindle and tied off to the

I just read Vol 10-Number 4's article on New Guide Concept System for spinning rods and followed the instructions for an 8ft Graphite USA blank rated for 20# line. The reels spool lip (Shimano Twinpower 8000) measured 58.42mm and following the procedures in the article, the choke guide should be placed 1577.34mm from the face of the spool. Well, using the mm to inches conversion, the choke gui

Not sure what is the maximum but mine turns at about 17rpms. I've heard others state that 4-5 rpms ok too.

One consideration on this build is the thickness of the blank where you will mount the reel. Problem that I can see is that it would be very thin with a single wrap of corktape so you would have to go double thickness. Double thickness adds double the weight to the handle.

Is this build a spinning rod? My salt water spinning rods have the stripper guide reversed. No need to reverse the guide if building conventional.

Cutting as little as possible is best to maintain the same action. Look for a 6' to cut down to 5'6". How about a Super Seeker ss-cjb60xf rated at 15-25 # test?
