Do what the rest of us do. Take him to a tackle shop and let him pull on a few blanks. I'm not from the bay area but I understand that Hi's Tackle may be the shop you'd want to visit. Soft tip with a lot of backbone. Maybe a Seeker blank?

Seems to me that would depend upon the use of the rod, line tests, etc. For example, a rod to be used for offshore big game fishing may have a longer rear grip if the angler is going to use a fighting pad. A surf spinning rod will have a longer handle for better casting properties while a trout rod may likely just have a rear grip extending down to the elbow when held one handed.

Try @#$%&. I have seen some there that look like the aftcos but are clones. Pac bay also makes them.

I have several of the short bent butts that I use for unlimited class stand up rods. The main reason for the bent butt design is that when you are fighting the fish, the pressure against your rod pad is downwards through your knees and legs rather than pushing towards your gut. Because of this, you can put a lot more pressure on the fish because there is less pressure on your back. Your leg mu

275. Re: 811 Failure
So, what is the CP of choice now that 811 is out? Hopefully, something that is still readily available.

Thanks Billy. I've posted on that board already. Waiting for responses.

Thanks Bill, I am familiar with all the Calstar blanks. Looking for more parabolic and lighter in weight. I have been using the Phenix boron/graphite blanks in my last three builds.

I just bought the Treadmaster and used it on three rods. One of the rods was white wraps....this is why I bought the Treadmaster as FC will turn it offwhite right away. Nice stuff, Andy and easy to apply.

Thanks Billy. I am already familiar with that forum. I am now looking for a source. Anyone in the US doing some importing. The tunamax blanks are too short for what I am looking for.

On another forum that I frequent, there has been discussions about 8-9 ft tuna popping rods that are suitable for fishing up to 80# test on a spinning reel ( Stella 20,000) and being fully capable of casting a popper of 4-6 ounces weight. These finished rods cost upwards of $700.00 in Japan.
My question is this. How would a rod builder find a source for the blanks used in the manufacturing

Go to page 2 and scroll down and you will see that I asked this question. Tom Kirkman's answer of 55 inches was perfect for my blank, also a 7 footer.

I have seen these types of grip on very heavy offshore rods used mostly on the west coast long range boats. I have also seen some try to duplicate these grips by making into two pieces but they typically do not make a good fit and the seams are quite obvious and amateur-like. I would surmise that these foregrips are installed with the first guide wrapped onto a blank without the reelseat and bu

I hope that this link works but I believe that he is referring to a set up like used in the Braid products power play rods.

Thanks Tom. Sorry for the late response but I was fishing with the family this weekend. I do have some 10's on order and will give it a try. Can't wait for my Rodmaker magazine to come. I hope it is soon. Thanks again.

Tom, thanks for the intersect point. Incredibly the 40 guide is placed at 21.5, the 25 guide is 11" further, the 16 guide is 9.5' further and the 8's are spaced 6.5, 5.5, 5, and 5. I did the test casting and got good distance and no obvious slapping of the stripper guide nor the blank. The static testing looked good as well. Btw, how did you come up with 55" intersect? What would I

Thanks Tom, I was thinking something along the lines of what you suggest. What I did not know is about how far down the blank should I arbitrarily pick. Much of the placement under the New Concept system depends on the angle of the spindle coming off the reel. In my case, I have a rather large reel mounted on a relatively short blank with a long handle. The lenght from the face of the spool t

I am building an offshore spinning rod using the new concept guide system as shown in the library on this site. The rod will be used for casting poppers and the reel is filled with 60# spectra and a short 6 ft topshot. The reel that I am using is a Shimano Twinpower 8000 which is comparable to the Shimano Sustain. The reel puts out up to 30#s of drag and I am matching this reel to a Phenix 7'

According to Tim Campbell, the finish is not affected by the light as it is by the heat generated by the light. Heat activates the quicker set time.

Warm it up and it should turn liquid again. Either a few seconds in the microwave or place the bottle into a jar of hot water.

Place the guides on with masking tape. Put your reel on and string the line thru the guides. Now, to do your static test, pull down as hard as you want but don't pull with the line. Instead, pull down holding just the tip. Now tug gently with the line just to get an idea of how the line will be in relationship to the guide placements. You don't need to put pressure onto the guides to see h

Contact the two west coast gurus of acid wrapping, Jim Racela and Jim Kastroff, both of whom reside in California and are familiar with standup fishing San Diego Long Range Style. Both posts here on this forum and are very helpfull.

I do not wrap rods for profit. I wrap for my own use and a few for friends. I have Doc's video. I have spoken to Leon Todd at Calstar as well as Martin at Yo's Custom Rods and they all use masking tape. This is the way I learned and I have never had a failure. I think that Billy and Doc stated it correctly. There are many options to use. Use the one where you have the most confidence but d

This last issue was late as usual. I received mine two days ago. I thought it was lost again but Tom reassured me that it will come...and come it did. Thanks, Tom. It's just that we all look forward to receiving the magazine so much. It probably would not bother me so much if the ones that got it early just kept quiet for a few weeks until the rest of us receive ours...LOL. Thanks again for
