What's the purpose of a uni-butt that's angled downward?

I really couldn't find anything by searching so what purpose would you use a uni-butt that has the rear section bent downward for? I think the straight ones have the gimbal that goes into a socket on a waist belt but can't figure out what the angled ones offer? Does it go into a socket mounted on your boat seat or does it have a certain presentation affect when placed in a rod holder? Thanks.

Not sure they have any use except for fighting chairs. Least that's all I've ever seen them used for

Go to Jay Lancaster's gallery 3rd page. Maybe the picture will help you understand the advantages.

The Long curver butts are ment for the chairs and the short bent butts are ment for stand up fishing and specializes fighting pads and harnesses. Both are ment to keep the rod at the optimum fighting angle and avoid high sticking. The short one never really caught on in the long range fishing community and only seems to have enjoyed limited success in the private community in the stand up situations. Works great in a chair though and lots of private boaters use them.

Bent butts allow you to get more rod length behind the reel, yet still fall within IGFA regulations for straight line distance from rod butt to reel centerline. So they reduce the fish's leverage advantage a bit, but remain within the rules.

I have several of the short bent butts that I use for unlimited class stand up rods. The main reason for the bent butt design is that when you are fighting the fish, the pressure against your rod pad is downwards through your knees and legs rather than pushing towards your gut. Because of this, you can put a lot more pressure on the fish because there is less pressure on your back. Your leg muscles are much stronger than your back muscles. Really great for standup fishing on a small boat but are hard on casting with that bent butt. We use them on the long range west coast boats for our kite outfits as we generally stay in our harness while waiting for the bite.

Thanks Jim, now I see how they're used. I don't know what he's trying to catch for but I don't have enough meat in my saddle to land whatever he's after!. Thanks again.

LOL!!!

If I can remember...that is probably about 40-45# of drag pressure on a Calstar GF7455xxh unlimted blank cut down to about 4'8" total length. That is one stiff little blank...nice bend in it eh?
