Yes, the Victory uses the VSS 16. Yes, it is too small. At least for me. I also have medium size hands and much prefer the VSS 17 or the IPS (it says 16 but the cork that fits is the same diameter as the VSS 17). As you said, opinions vary and I would think about putting together the VSS 16, press fitting it on a rod with masking tape arbors, and see if you like the feel.

Thanks for the suggestion Thomas My MB736 was IP 790 AA 71 My SJ736 was IP 800 AA 76 I got them at the same time. Clearly the MB736 was way off spec or was another blank. But it wasn't an SJ736. I bought another 3 of the MB736 over the summer because I liked the first one so much. Then a ten pound pike wrapped me around the trolling motor and the original rod was broken. I wasn't too upset

3. MB736
Old MB736 xray = 790 grams of power New MB736 xray = 630 grams of power Measured myself. This is not a complaint for NFC. I don't want or need anything from NFC. Seriously, no need to contact me or tell everyone here my order history. If I recommended the MB736 as a chatterbait rod for anyone here, I am sorry. Old one was great. New one not gonna work very well unless you fish only open wa

As Spencer said, the 1.5 on the Fuji site is the line rating. It's a Japanese system with line rating in "Gou." One gou = 0.165 mm in line diameter. They prefer to rate line by diameter rather than strength, which makes sense in that US line ratings are totally made up and often the listed diameter is pretty far off from the actual diameter. One gou line = Sufix 832 8 lb and Berkely X9

John, the numbers I posted were for the NRX (not +) JWR 852s spinning rod. It came out more powerful than I thought it would as well. Checked three times.

Checked the MB733 just to be sure. 470 grams and 72 degrees. Can't get tip and butt since it is built. Haven't fallen in love with it for bottom contact, but does really well with 4" Keitech Easy Shiner on a 3/16 to 1/4 oz jig head.

My opinion is that if you are looking for a JWR NRX replacement Point Blank is the place to be. I've built several NFC xray spinning and casting rods and none has that NRX feel. Light but not too light tip into a more parabolic bend for fighting fish. Also understand that Gary Loomis had sold G. Loomis before the NRX was made. He may have played a part, but it is/was really a Shimano blank. My MB

Yeah, I actually live pretty close to Thorne Bros. I've built a fair number of rods and also have a few made by Thorne's. To me the 7'6" MLXF has a lot of backbone, but I find it fights fish nicely. The way I fish ned and hair jigs is similar, more floating/swimming through the water than jigging on the bottom. For that I think a longer rod works great. If you plan on fishing them like jigs

Will you be getting the Thorne's predator blank or the regular St. Croix (rod geeks) SCV? I have both a factory Legend Elite 7'6" MLXF and a Thorne's predator 7' MLXF. Very similar blanks, can't go wrong with either. The medium predator blank is more unique. It has about the fastest tip of any rod I have felt. Like maybe 15 inches of the tip bend under moderate pressure. I keep thinking I wa

In my experience the Rainshadow popping rods are much less powerful than their "bass" rods at the same power. I have an immortal 7' heavy popping blank and it has less than 600 grams of power (sorry I don't remember the exact number). I do agree that a more moderate blank makes sense for that application. Maybe one of their crankbait blanks would be more appropriate?

From my experience with carbon fiber guides on a Daiwa rod: 1) Very hard to knock out a ring under normal use 2) Lighter than titanium, but don't know how much 3) They are not pliable. Very stiff, they do not bend. 4) I think the Daiwa (Fuji) inserts are SIC

It would be nice to have a source for carbon fiber guides. Right now it is just Daiwa and St. Croix with carbon fiber guides made by Fuji. No idea if or when the guides alone will be sold. Is there a measurable benefit over titanium guides? Dunno, but probably doesn't matter. More choice is always good. If you can sell them at a price not too much more than Fuji titanium I think there would be qu

I agree with you about braid Mick. And I hate to bring it up, but I have a very hard time believing that the advantage of braid is related to vibration transmission. It's because of lack of stretch. Suggesting that pulling or not pulling is what you feel with a rod. Does the pulling/not pulling equal vibration in a rod blank? I'm not smart enough to know that. I actually think that all the things

Anyone have CCS data on this blank? I see the Immortal version has way more power than the Eternity version. I'm looking for something like the Immortal, but black and at a lower cost. Thanks for any input.

It's a good question Logan. Rods that have the same power can feel very different depending on their action angle. If two rods are the same power, the faster rod by definition has a softer tip and a more powerful mid/butt section. So with fishing lures, the faster rod may feel less powerful because the weight of the lure will bend the tip more. However, when fighting a fish, the faster rod may fe

I don't think anyone is suggesting all high TNF rods are more sensitive than low TNF rods. Aleks showed that an ultralight blank is better at transmitting vibration than a medium heavy blank. I think every single one of us could have predicted that.I guess he has also shown that TNF is not 100% correlated to vibration transmission. However, there is absolutely no basis for him to say that there i

It totally depends on how you hold the rod. I hold a spinning rod with 3 or sometimes all fingers ahead of the reel stem and put my finger out on the rod blank. The short foregrip and close hook keeper would be a non-starter for me. If you grip further back and your fingers don't reach the hook keeper then it is just fine. For drop shots I have the hook keeper near the butt of the rod (split grip

No chance they are fuji. Also not CRB, as they don't make titanium guides. I think they are a proprietary brand for Abu and you likely won't be able to find any. Having said that, pick something that looks close and no on will be the wiser.

Not to derail the thread, but I previously gave a very objective answer to why a certain guide train (KL) is better. It makes for a guide train that weighs less. Which reduces the weight of the rod and allows maintaining as much of the stiffness to weight ratio of the bare blank as possible. A rod that is both light overall and has a higher stiffness to weight ratio responds better to inputs. It

It's better because a KR guidetrain weighs less. Smaller ringed guides and smaller runners weigh less. Less weight in guides = better rod performance. But it probably doesn't improve casting distance. As noted several times above, with light braid nothing you do with the guides it going to make for better or worse casting performance. In fact, the fine folks at American Tackle make a guide set (

The carbon fiber guides are made by Fuji and I think the ring is SIC. Are they less durable than metal guides? Maybe. Do they make the rod more sensitive? Not for me. However the particular rod we are talking about is quite amazing and I haven't found a blank like it. The guide spacing is not what I would do, but I'm not about to cut off a $100 set of guides and replace them with another $100 set

I have the same rod. It's a size 25 guide and something like 58mm tall. The match for that would be Fuji KLH size 25. I would go with black titanium SIC (though more gray than black). Another option in black steel is an alps size 25 y guide. You could also call St. Croix, they are using the same AGS guides on some of their rods now and may be more helpful than Daiwa. Or not.

I just finished measuring mine, completed rods, not blanks. SJ736 = 800g AA 75 MB736 = 790g AA 72. SJ seems right in line with what others have gotten. MB seems more powerful than what others have gotten. I had myself convinced from fishing the SJ was significantly more powerful. Shows what feelings get you.

I haven't built the MH but I've built the medium and the heavy at that length. They have a really fast action so need more guides and closer spacing near the tip. I have 10 guides plus tip on the heavy. The line does touch the blank under a full bend but I am ok with that. If your goal is to never have the line touch the blank, you are probably going to need 12 guides with that blank. I think you

My mystery box included several light and UL blanks and lots of heavyish flipping stick kind of blanks. Not so many in between. It also included the stoutest blank I have ever felt. I think it's a tuna rod. It also included two 7 foot blanks that are normally sold as 8 foot blanks and I think have some cut off the tip and the butt. Not sure I can find a use for a blank with 6 inches off the tip,
