I totally see what you are saying John and I agree about the replacement price being great with St. Croix (Loomis too). I think the only factory rod I have that is built how I would build it is a Loomis GLX. Even there, I would probably put titanium guides on it if I built it myself. I just like to put titanium guides on high end, light blanks. I'll pretend I can tell the difference.

I agree with Norm on the IPS or VSS 17 seat. I don't think there is a quality concern with any brand of reel seat, but I find those the most comfortable. I give a slight preference to the IPS because the pre-cut cork requires a bit more fine tuning for the VSS vs IPS. Carbon fiber vs cork is a personal thing. They are equally not slippery. Fish slime is the slippery part. I'm fine with both, but

I prefer Immortal over Revelation. The Immortals are little bit lighter for the same power. I also think they are more sensitive. Of course that might be because they are more expensive. Don't make the mistake I did and get an Immortal before a Revelation because then the Revelation is automatically a downgrade. I think you will be more than happy with a Revelation. If by some chance it is not li

I assume you are talking about a spinning rod with the walleye rod mentioned. The reel matters much less than the line. Most walleye fishing is done with a 2000-3000 size reel, all of which are similar enough to not affect guide layout. In my opinion Fuji KLh guides are the premier spinning guides. They have software to recommend guide sizes and a layout. Go to anglers resource (link to the left

Not that you asked, but I would go with St Croix over NFC every time for a walleye blank like you are seeking. St. Croix is such a well known quantity in the walleye community, and if SCV is less sensitive than xray it isn't by any significant amount. As you stated, get a medium light and a medium, length of your choice The Legend Elite and Legend X are built on the SCV blank that you can buy. I

Seaguide titanium guides are nice, though maybe 10% less quality than Fuji (glue spots, minor irregularities, don't wrap quite as easily). I'm sure they will hold up fine. Also I think seaguide is the only company besides Fuji that has titanium (as opposed to titanium plated) tip tops.

Yeah, I like a softer tip to throw frogs. I feel that a typical 3/8 -1/2 oz frog wouldn't really load the RX8 mentioned above. It feels like a rod meant to throw an ounce or more. My preference of course, others may differ.

Unless you want a really really stout rod for frogs I would avoid the RX8 mentioned above. I have one that I haven't finished building yet. I was going to make it a frog rod but it just doesn't have enough tip for casting frogs. I also used to have Cabelas zx 76 heavy and to me it has a much nicer tip for frogs. I have a point blank 73HXF and it would be the perfect frog rod. However the point bl

Neither. I would get an etes72ml. The medium will be too stout, if you mean traditional ned rigs on a jig 1/8 oz or less. Phenix makes great blanks, but I see no reason to pay significantly more vs the eternity.

Matagi makes cork for the VSS reel seats. I would guess it is high quality than Fuji cork. VooDoo rods should be able to help you out.

ERN of the PB 73MLF is 20.6, so basically the same as the NFC 725. Weight of PB is 1.76 oz. Heavier, yes. Earth shattering, no. This is why I really appreciate objective power numbers and want to thank NFC (as well as PB) for providing them. Will I have to buy one of the new air blanks? Of course.

I looked up some weights for the REVS72ML and found anywhere from 1.7 to 2.05 oz. Could the carbon wrapped version weight another quarter of an ounce? Probably. Agree with Mick above that it is likely a typo or some other error the specs, rather than anything with the blank. I guess I've never bothered to weigh any blanks, even though I have a scale that would work. If I like the weight in my han

I have the NFC xray SJ736 and MB736. I agree with Aaron above that the SJ736 would be the one you want. However, a 1/2 oz weight plus a heavy plastic is close to an ounce and that is too much for the SJ736. I've started building on Point Blank and I like them better than the xrays. They are a touch lighter for the same power, balance better, and I just prefer the feel. They are also more expensiv

Buy your own boat so you are in control of the trolling motor. Barring that, agree with above. Open your bail, let line out, and give the boat captain a chance to pull around. I don't like to do the bow string snap with light rods, but it does work very well with big musky lures in the rocks. Actually works better with braid because the lack of stretch gives a quick change from tight to slack. I

Come on man. Point Blank 7 foot 3 inch one piece heavy power fast action. Seems like every other rod blank description on earth. Oh yeah, they list CCS and RDA power and action angle on their website. They have an excellent power to weight ratio and have a faster action than most other blanks. These are facts. I do not find them to be soulful. If you think you might want a blank with those charac

Agree with the above posters. Very sensitive. "Too nice" to frog with, but it works great for that. I built it for 1/2 to 3/4 oz jigs and it is perfect for that.

Sadly the fine folks of the Minnesota DNR do not believe in A-rigs. Might be kinda tough to catch fish if only one of your 5 lures has a hook.

I built an IMMP70H for big spinnerbaits, and it works great. Not even close to a flipping blank. It is truly moderate fast like you want, but not nearly enough power. I have an NFC delta SW764 which I think would fit your needs. It's pretty sensitive, stout enough to throw 2 oz musky baits, and I would call it moderate fast. Sorry I don't have CCS ratings on it. Also, for 55 bucks it is a great d

For a recent ultralight spinning rod I started with a size 12 Pac Bay titanium match guide and went 12, 6, to size 4 runners. I use 4 lb braid on this rod, and it works great. If using mono or fluoro I would probably stick with the size 16. The pac bay guides are a lot less expensive than fuji titanium, and while I don't believe that are as strong as fuji, it matters less with 4 lb line. Also, in

Also remember that the KR page on the Anglers resource will tell you what size the butt guide should be. As Herb said, it's more about height (angle) than ring size. Keep in mind that the KR concept is for braided line. It's probably not great for heavy mono or fluoro.

I believe the Pro Glass is composite, based on the picture I found on the @#$%& site. Says SCI glass and SC2 graphite. I like the Rodgeeks glass blanks, but then again that is the only brand of glass blanks I have tried.

I have a bunch of pretty high quality cork discs, 1/4 inch thick and 1 1/8 inch diameter. I need to drill a 1/4 hole in each of them. I don't have a lathe or a drill press. The discs are a little too small to fit in the cork ring holder I got from mudhole. Suggestions? If the answer is just buy a lathe and do it right I can handle that. Don't think I would buy a drill press as I don't see myself

How could they possibly pick the most functional rod without actually using them for many hours for their intended purpose? Without fishing a rod, all you can do is judge how much work it took, how pretty it is, and what level of quality the work has. I make functional rods, with some slight bling, but I can appreciate the amazing craftsmanship in these rods. Besides, do you really need to see a

You could go even smaller with the reduction train if you are using mono 4 lb or less or braided line. Could use KLH or PacBay M 12, 6, and then directly to your size 4 runners (F guides). Sometimes we talk too much about weight, but on an ultralight guide train weight makes a huge difference in performance.

BFS is a way for American anglers to be like Japanese anglers. No companies are pushing BFS here, they are simply responding to consumer demand. BFS has been around in Japan since the 1980s. It was developed in Japan as a way to be more precise with small lures. Look on youtube for Japan trout fishing BFS and see the kinds of casts that can be made with a casting reel and a 5 foot fiberglass rod.

Fiber blend was a mix of graphite types that fit in the lineup between GL3 and IMX, so some level of intermediate modulus. I agree that the bronzeback spinning rods are pretty sweet. If I had to pick a modern blank to match this rod I would look at the NFC delta series in MB flavor. Of course NFC ratings are a crap shoot and I haven't used any of the MB delta blanks so I have a hard time picking
