Hey Raymond, When you come to visit Derek maybe I could come to Rohnert Park, I think that is where Derek lives, and meet both of you. It would be great to talk to fellow rod builders in person as I have already bored my friends to death talking about rod building and I haven't met any builders locally. Thanks for the good wishes on the sale. Lynn

I have read many times, from people who know way more about rod building than I do, that the spine is an effect and not a physical thing. With that being said, why would it be that important? A blank really only does two things. It stores energy when acted upon by an external force or it releases that energy when the external force is removed. If that is what you are referring to as oscillati

David, I have been interested in getting young people involved in rod building since I started building rods several years ago. It sounds like you have some great resources from the above posts so I won't be of much help with the syllabus. What I might be able to help you with is that I have over 100 spools of old, but I think usable, silk winding thread that I would be happy to donate to your

Nice site but miscellaneous on the Home Page should have two L's. Hopefully it is easy to fix as there was obviously a lot of work put into the site and a misspelling shouldn't degrade the effort. Did the same thing myself so I hope my comment is taken as constructive. Lynn

How much of a curve does the blank have? I have built a couple of RX8+'s and they have been about as straight as any ot the other blanks that I've used. I would contact the place you bought it from and see if they will replace it for you if you think it has more curve than it should. I'm sure Batson's inspects their blanks and wouldn't send out a defective or bent one but we are all human and

If you want an 8'6" 4-wt. in med-fast action the Rainshadow RX7 fits the bill. In 4-piece it retails for $103.55. Something to consider, since it is going to be a give-away, is that the 2-piece is only $57.77. I have both in stock in Olympic Green. Thanks, Lynn Double LL Fly Rods

I think that you might be going too small on your running guides. I was reading some "customer reviews" about multi-tip fly lines the other day and the main complaint was that the loops wouldn't pass through the guides or got hung-up in the tip. Even if the knots will pass thru the guides under normal conditions, add some frigid temperatures and a little ice and you might find that th

I would think you would end up with 9 guides instead of 8. Round 7 1/2 up to 8 and add 1 is the formula. I don't like to be subjective on how many guides to use so I would let your static test tell you how many you need. I have found that ordering a few extra guides, like Tom suggested, really works the best for me. For what it is worth, I would use a Spin-type guide for a stripper on that s

I have tried many different blanks over the last few years and can't say anything bad about any of them. They all perform well. That being said, I don't like to spend a lot of money as I am not sure if paying several hundred or more dollars for a blank, which might just have a better paint job on it, will make it any better performing. If I had to choose a single manufacturer for all of my pur

Chris, You don't have to subscribe to get back issues. Just go to the RodMaker link on the left and click on "back issues" then select Volume 6 #4. There is an artilcle in the Library that lists all of the topics in all of the back issues should you be interested. Unfortunately the article in the Library states that the Epoxy Mixer Article is in Volume 6 #3 which seems to be incorre

Phil, Forecast Spey blanks only come in Dark Blue. They are a blend of RX6(33 million modulus) and RX7(43million modulus) graphite. Rainshadow Spey blanks come in matte clear and are a blend of RX6, RX7 & Rx8 graphites. I don't have the modulus on the RX8 graphite but I would assume it would be in the 50 million range because of the RX8's fast action. Call Batson's if you need more info,

Todd, You'll have to mount the reel seat in a way to be able to slide the adapter for the fighting butt into the end of the reel seat. Fit the parts together before you glue them up so you can seen how much of the reel seat will hang out past the blank. It will be pleanty strong as most of the reel seat will still be glued to the blank. You might want to scuff up the surfaces on the adapter a

Mo, In Batson's Catalog they list the PVD TiCh plating as being twice as hard as the substrate material, but it is probably safe to assume that the plating would eventually wear off. I would take the chance on at least one set because in my opinion they are about the nicest looking of any of the wire frame fly guides out there. Bright Gray is how they describe the color. They also make a TiCh

Toland, While the static method is the best way to set up your guides, I don't think that the manufacturers use that method. They wouldn't have any way to know what reel was going to be used ( One of the reasons we custom builders can do a better job than the big rod makers). They would have to try and set it up using a "middle of the road" approach. Something that would work with

Tolan, I went to the Batson website because they have a very comprehensive guide spacing chart for all of their blanks. They list your blank for casting applications, but they don't suggest guides for that blank for a spinning application. Just a big N/A or not applicable. I would call them if you really want to use this blank but it sounds to me like they are saying that the blank isn't real

Hey Guys, Great discussion with all of those pictures! I can even understand the New York accent. I did have some trouble wth the size 16 Fuji seat that you are referring to as the Okuma Alumina reel that I used had too small of a foot to fit snugly. Some tape fixed that but I was surprised that the tape was required. Wouldn't really want to sell a rod to someone and then tell them they had

Hey Shawn, Your leery, not leary. I'm Leary! lol.. I can't answer your question on a big rod like that but I have used the same methods to make arbors as you have with good results. Is the size available between the seat and where it mounts big enough to use a polyfoam arbor? Something like the Flex Coat ones? A recent article in Rod Maker showed how to pour and prepare a poly-urethane

Michael, Thanks! I think you told me more about open water fly rods than I have ever considered before. When Dennis said that he was building a 9 weigtht fly rod to use in salt water, I really didn't even consider that weight rod for fishing in 1000 feet of water. I still think that a salmon/steelhead weight rod could still work well with a size 16 stripper, but I'm aslo sure that a 20 would

Guys, Thanks for all of your inputs. I will probably start off with Billy's book as I was just trying to add some class to my rods without breaking the bank on equipment. I can handle tape. Handling that New York accent might prove to be challenging but the plain English part gives me some hope! Thanks Very Much Lynn

Since I've never done this kind of thing I don't really understand how you keep track of all of the different threads. I've seem pictures o
