I just received a 8 /12 4wt rainshadow rx8+ today, this will be my third build but my first high end. instead of doing a true spline test I assembled it with with the bows in the blank to get it straight left and right but there is quite a bit of a bow. the main peices that were slightly bowed were the second up from the butt and the thirid up from the butt. IS THIS NORMAL? or am I being to picky.
Thanks, Bob Re: How Unstraight can a fly rod be?

All of the Rainshadow blanks I've built on have been straight as an arrow, including an RX8+ and 2 RX7+'s. At the price of these blanks, I would send it back and ask for another one. Re: How Unstraight can a fly rod be?

How much of a curve does the blank have? I have built a couple of RX8+'s and they have been about as straight as any ot the other blanks that I've used. I would contact the place you bought it from and see if they will replace it for you if you think it has more curve than it should. I'm sure Batson's inspects their blanks and wouldn't send out a defective or bent one but we are all human and one might have slipped through the cracks. They are nice blanks and you should be happy with it.

Well I measured it and it wasn't as bad as it looks when you hold it up. total was only about 1/4 for the lenght of the blank. roll it 90deg and it is perfect. Now I hadn't splined it just lined up what gave me the most uniform look. I am assumind that it would spine out the same way, or am I way of base.
Is this ok or should I send it back? Bob Here's a pic [i142.photobucket.com] Re: How Unstraight can a fly rod be?

1/4 in over the full length isn't to much for me, installing the guides so their weight is opposite the tape as you have it will help pull the blank straighter when built. The bend you have probably has very little to do with the spline. Re: How Unstraight can a fly rod be?

Interesting question. I was wondering the same thing on the first Dan Craft blank I've ordered. I was quite surprised at the amount of bow in the tip section. It's a sig. 3 6'10" 1wt. Is this common for this blank? Re: How Unstraight can a fly rod be?

My Sig III 1 wt was arrow straight, as have pretty much all the Dan Craft blanks I've used. 1/16 inch is about as much as I've ever seen. Re: How Unstraight can a fly rod be?

Bob... If you are at all uncertain about that blank I recommend you return it. I returned a Rainshadow RX7 that had a kink in the final four inches of the tip section. I got a new blank in about three days with a nice note and a follow-up phone call from Batson Enterprises making sure that I was completely satisfied. What a great outfit they truly are!
