I'm about to build a 7 1/2' 3 wt for a friend of mine and would like your opinion on guide selection.
I have 3 different scenarios both employ 1 double foot stripper, 6 single foot running guides + tip. The first is 10,8,6,6,6,6,6,6 top, 10,6,6,6,6,6,6,6 top or 8,6,6,6,6,6,6,6 top what would your preference be? Thanks in advance for the help. :>) Regards Dave Fishing is Life the rest is just Details Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/09/2008 01:36PM by Dave Orr. Re: Guide Selection, Input needed.

I think you'll find that both work about the same. Still, I'd go for the second one just for aesthetics per what we're used to seeing somewhat.
Trying them both would require that you buy one #8 and one additional #6 guide. Small price to pay for testing purposes. ............. Re: Guide Selection, Input needed.

I would think you would end up with 9 guides instead of 8. Round 7 1/2 up to 8 and add 1 is the formula. I don't like to be subjective on how many guides to use so I would let your static test tell you how many you need. I have found that ordering a few extra guides, like Tom suggested, really works the best for me.
For what it is worth, I would use a Spin-type guide for a stripper on that size blank. The added height seems to give the fly line a smoother path to the running guides but this is just my opinion. I'm sure that you will come out fine regardless of which way you choose to go. Good Luck, Lynn Re: Guide Selection, Input needed.

Like Lynn, I also prefer the spinning style, such as SVSG or similar, for the stripping guide.
