Hi to all and thanks for all the advise. I did knead the tube as directed in the instructions. Both Norman and Roger are correct as the first material to come out was drier than deeper into the tube. The color is a tad light which good. I added a tick of brown dye I purchased quite awhile ago from Rockler Woodworking and the color is nigh-on perfect. While I find it sands nicely, I will employ R

I purchased the Elmer’s golden oak at lowes and immediately started filling a test piece as soon as I got home. The filler seamed awfully dry and chalky right out of the tube. Is this normal or did I get an old, dried out tube? I would think a “wetter” consistency would facilitate the filler seeping into the pours and bonding to the cork better.

Top of the day to all. Does anyone manufacturer a size 8, 11/64 tube tip top? This old FG surf rod is a fatty! I can find a few 10 / 11s but no 8s. I would prefer polished SS but will buy black guides to match a black top if needed, ring material comparable to Alconite.

Herb, Thanks for the offer. I found Elmer’s golden oak at a Lowes 10 miles from home, even if three times what others have stated they pay, maybe this is a larger tube. While admittedly a cheap bast@#*, I can also be impatient, so it’s off to Lowes. Plus, I enjoy driving on these holiday weekends trying to avoid all the DUI moving chicanes. Thanks also to Jay, Roger (the other one), Lynn and No

Thanks to Phil, Donald, Buzz and Herb for their input. We do not have Big Box Home Builders here in LA LA Land and am experiencing difficulty locating it at the typical sources such as Home Depot, Lowes and local hardware stores. I might have to bite the bullet and purchase it through Mud Hole and wait 2 weeks for delivery. Thanks again, guys.

Hi to all. Thank you for reading and hopefully afford assistance to my inquiry. I am attempting to save the cork grips on an old FG Garcia surf rod which has a few, fairly deep voids in the surface. I like to keep these old rods as original as possible, cork is rather expensive and I am, admittedly, a cheap bast#@*. Mud hole offers a wood filler to be used to fill cork. Have any of you used it,

Thank you to those responding. Ken, my seeking buyers was intended to be more humorous than desperate. Apparently, there is no use for a spine finder anymore. I am totally confused but am self admittedly a newbie and, apparently, uninformed. My understanding was finding the spine to be the upmost of importance along with proper guide spacing when attempting to build a proper functioning rod. Wh

Robert, I agree with John, McMaster Carr is awesome! Great products, good prices, outstanding shipping and customer service.Their Santa Fe Springs, CA location is only 20 minutes from my house and I visit their will call at least twice a week. However the list he showed you is for 302 / 304 SS (known as 18-8 in the fastener / screw industry) which is not as corrosion resistant as 316 (spring bac

Hi to all you wrappers. I cannot believe I am the first one to discover this but thought I would share my new finding, just in case, after feeling a bit dense I did not realize it sooner. Immediately after spending the time to build a semi-adjustable spine finder from stuff found around the shop, I realized my wrapper would already do the same, but even better. The spacing is infinitely adjustab

Thanks to all responding. From my research here and elseware, 100% will use nothing else than a rod finish, and of that overwhelming majority, 90% use Perma Gloss. Those kinds of numbers can’t be wrong. It will be interesting to compare the long term performance of the one rod finished with ProKote against all my others which will be PG. It is still quite odd to me that none of the rod finish ma

Donald, Thank you for your time, reply and insight. I used DNA because it leaves less, if any, residue behind than any other “solvent”, including isopropyl, is easily available and thought it mild enough to not have to worry about it attacking the surface. I guess I got lucky. My go to solvent for just about everything is acetone but knew better in this case. “Risk” is a good term for wrapping o

To all; A glorious good day. At the risk of opening an unending debate, or not receiving any replies at all due to all you long-time wrappers going through the same question once again, I will be appreciative of your insight and opinions concerning rod blank refinishing. I can hear you now, “Not this again!”, and I can’t really blame you. But I am new to wrapping and have some of my own ideas/th

While preferring to not have to, I am also interested in making my own to match the remaining, vintage guides which I cannot locate. It is a simple double loop with double, opposed feet, size 20 or 25. I found a crappy, chrome plated one which I am using until I find or make a suitable / proper SS stripper. Does anyone know which SS is better between 316 (spring back) or 316L (bend and stay)?

Dennis, and anyone else who may be interested, The overnight, actually 48 hours, bleach soaking only improved the stains 10% but also lightened the blank about 5%, so is not worth the effort. I cannot bring myself to paint it and hide the beautiful old-school FG weave, especially this Garcia one which I am quite certain is a Conolon blank prior to the two joining forces. After static testing, t

Dennis, Thanks again. As you can see from the photos, I am rather cramped for space and need to be able to store the wrapper away (hangs from the joists) although it is left down most of the time. My bench is used for all my projects and needs to be clear. I haven’t developed the nerve to ask the wife if I could put it in her sewing room, and doubt I ever will for obvious reasons. Using a sco

Michael, Norman and Dennis, Thank you for taking the time to assist my dilemma. After posting my request for help, I inspected the rod more closely and gave it additional thought. Norman and Dennis, I think you are correct. The underwraps were yellow with green and blue overwraps and they were transparent enough to see the guide feet underneath. All three colors were separate wraps so I can onl

A glorious, good day to all you happy wrappers and a previous thank you to those replying to offer assistance. I have become very fond and respectful of the old FG rods from the 50’s and 60’s, restoring those with names / markings such as Conolon, Garcia, South Bend to their original condition. Others found without names, which were probably custom or home wrapped, I have removed the guides, fer

Thanks Dennis and Norman, The wraps and finish are in quite good condition and would prefer to leave them that way. I will try the centerpunch approach since it is the easyist and have used the method before for shrinking an oversized press fit hole. Otherwise I will attempt the collet approach.

Thanks Tom and Ron. That's a good idea as long as one creeps on it as both of you mentioned. The additional issue I have, which I forgot to mention, is the ferrule is wrapped with thread spiraled over two strips of that old-school aluminum tape (nice touch on those 1960ish rods) which would be nice to preserve. I'm afraid the tubing cutter, even with a flattened wheel might damage it, but then so

Are any of you familiar with reducing the ID of a female aluminum Ferrule? I was cleaning and polishing the ferrules of an old FG rod that was given to me which would not go together without forcing and ended up with a fit that is not quite snug enough, maybe 0.0005” will do. Anxious to learn your ideas / methods before attempting to collapse it a tad utilizing a machinist collet and block chuck.

Barry, Thank you for responding. I was given a 5ft, bamboo Heddon casting rod. The reel seat is the nice old German silver (?) with moveable finger trigger but I think the front reel clamp (glorified but very nice hose clamp) has been replaced as it is SS with "Pflueger Griptite" stamped in it. While the clamp is probably old an serving its intended use, I would like to find an origina
