Speaking from a fly rod perspective ... I think they may pass a single tied knot slightly better, but since the major concern is at the tip, which always acts like a single foot, it probably doesn't matter. A tangle off the real of course would be a technique problem better addressed by someone other than the rod builder. The angle would not improve friction on casting since it would actually inc

All you mentioned are good, but my favorites for that application have always been the Batson RX6 or RX7. You'll be impressed at the performance/price ratio.

Strictly a personal preference issue, in my opinion. I don't see how adding weight to a graphite rod built with modern lightweight components, for the sole purpose of changing the center of gravity to where it balances perfectly in your hand can add enough value to the performance to be worthwhile. But if it feels good to someone, by all means do it. That's what we custom builders are here for an

Bill: Sounds like fun to me. I've done some live lining similar to that down here around the Chesapeake while relaxing with a "cold one". Don't use the float though, I just watch the line. Since the rod is usually picking the line up off the deck, we like to use size 20, 16 strippers, a 10 single foot, and 5's or even 4's the rest of the way for rods of that weight. If you use a waist

Need more tension ... and be sure there is at least a small amount of epoxy in the "tunnel". If there is, the guide would have to ride up and over this, like a "speedbump", thus only stretching the threads even tighter in order to come out. Just can't happen if there's enough tension to begin with.

The multi-piece are really good, so the 1 piece has to be even better.

I have read that the "coatings" on various non-rodwrapping threads is a silica or teflon based lubricant for the sewing machines it's intended for. I would test finish a few wraps on something and see how it does. You may know this, but just in case ... the very popular Madiera Polyneon thread used on many decorative wraps has such a lubricant. A preliminary coat or two of a clear color

I consider it a characteristic of hand craftsmanship... If I can get a smooth finish over it ... I'm happy, and never had a complaint. (assuming you mean the lock wrap hump and not a bunch of fussy stuff showing through).

I really like cason's water based cyrystal clear for prepping Madiera thread. Otherwise, I use NCP or Metallic and don't worry about it. For the base thread, I usually pick a lighter color regular nylon than darkens up enough to closely match the blank, without using any CP.

You could experiment with a satin finish polyacrylic from the hardware store ... but I doubt if it will be as strong as the two part epoxy thread finishes. Many, probably most, believe the threads provide the strength and the finish just seals everything up and holds it in place. I believe it's a bit of a combination of the two. Maybe Tom will chime in with some of his knowledge he gleaned from R

I bought the 360 thinking I may try some larger decals for rod tubes or some other non-rodbuilding projects at some point in the future. The show price was a good deal compared to the few other suppliers advertising it on-line. I'm certain the extra resolution has no advantage at the small size we're printing the rod labels, and the 270 will work just as well. I'm very impressed with the printer.

Far from just another Aussie bloke ... Col's genorous wisdom was always based on the tried and true, whether rodbuilding or matters of life. He always had a way of knowing just what to say. He provided great encouragement for me about three years ago when I lost my son. It turned out he had lost his 20 years prior. I am very grateful for the privelage of meeting him in person last year. My deepes

Very sad news to hear. Many rodbuilders here in the states had the pleasure to finally meet and speak with him in person at last years ICRBE. You can be sure of many prayers sent up from this side of the world. Please keep us informed.

Karen, it is always great to "see" you at the ICRBE, although you were busy when I came around and we didn't get to talk this year. But, I did get to talk and do some business with Patty, who is always very pleasant. Best wishes to your husband.

Can't recall ever seeing an 8ft 6wt ... I don't recommend this, But you could trim a foot off the Butt end without affecting the action tremendously. It will affect it though. (Never trim the tip end) What kind of situation would a 9 ft not work? A fast 9'6" 6wt is a sweet casting rod in normal conditions....

Tom: I'm looking forward to finally getting to use it soon. The box was missing the bed connectors and I wasn't able to get anyone at Renzetti to return my e-mails. But, it was easy to make a couple and do an alignment (I'm lucky to have been a millwright who still has access to a great machine shop). The biggest holdup has been the dayjob. I was working 12 hr days non-stop from 1st of April a

Hey Billy.....Your wiring is heavy enough to Not cause this problem. Electronic pedals should never spark, or get hot and still work at any speed ....they should just fry and quit altogether. I really think the odds are it's the pedal. Amazon, and sewing machine parts people on the web sell decent ones for 20 bucks up. Used on @#$%& even cheaper.

Paul: If this is the only requirements ...."Small creek ... 30 ft .....7-8x".... Then you could drop to a 6 1/2 ft, 2 wt. and do that easily. Batson makes a nice one in 2 or 4 piece. I've built a few of the 4 piece as pack rods for the east coast "jungle brookie fishing" guys. Not exactly slow, but considering the length of leader and short distance, I think it would work j

Tony: After trying both on rod and mandel, I have settled on using a mandrel as the best option for me. Although I never had any "egg shape or centering" problems with either method. I like making several handles at a time. I also like having a separate woodworkers lathe in the garage to keep the dirty work out of my "wrapping & finishing room". I have taken a liking to u

Jay: I think you oughta custom build the bench to maintain as much room in there as possible. But another option might be this: The woodworking benches sold at harbor freight are about 20" deep and made out of nice hard maple -like wood, easy and quick to assemble and have drawers. you could put two end for end for a full length bench and get eight drawers and shelf space to boot. Good luc
