9wt Fly Rod Build for Northern Pike

When I was twelve years old I had fiberglass fly rod that I would rig with a porcupine quill float light spit shot and hook and use golden shiners as bait. Well now I'm 67yrs old and have built many spinning and casting rods and have no clue what to use for guides on a
9wt rod for that application listed appove. I might even use a 10wt and use suckers for bait. I also would cast with artificial frogs and some floating baits. I'm OK with the handle part and reel and line but am confused on guides. Help please and thanks ahead of time

are you building a spinning rod or a fly rod? Never seen anyone fly fish with shinners?

Using a Fly Rod to fish live bait with light weight presentation. It's a blast when you get one 10 to 15 lbs on. its unorthodox but fun

I will be using 9 10wt fly reel and line. The only difference is how I rig the leader portion with float and live bait. This is a still fishing method used over weedbeds that hold Northern and muskies on the feed. Normally
close to deep water. This method works good early morning in May and June and again in September in Minnesota.

I found a article on the guides I will probably use a 16 and 12 strippers and then the rest single foot 7's

Bill:
Sounds like fun to me. I've done some live lining similar to that down here around the Chesapeake while relaxing with a "cold one". Don't use the float though, I just watch the line. Since the rod is usually picking the line up off the deck, we like to use size 20, 16 strippers, a 10 single foot, and 5's or even 4's the rest of the way for rods of that weight. If you use a waist stripping basket, I'd stay with the size 16.

If you're using ceramic insert single foot guides, like Fuji LAG, probably size 7 is fine. Wire single foot fly guides size 4 like John said.

7s will be way too heavy, you don't need that weight on the rod. go for #3 or #4 single foot fly guides. they will serve you well.
