Are you limited to just one rod from that pier? Why not use an anchor/fighting rod set up? A longer surf type in roughly three to four meter length for casting and planting the bait, and then a shorter two meter rod for fighting the fish. This is a proven set up in many spots around the world.

I wish I could help you but I cannot. This same problem has plagued me on more than one occasion. Usually with Aftcote but not always. No matter how many times I relay the coating it returns to the middle of the wrap. If I remove the lump in the center, it reforms leaving even less on the outer edges of the wrap. Odd. But it does not always happen.

I just wanted to comment that the artistic work by Lana Preston in the new RM is the highest form of art I have personally witnessed in this aspect of custom rod building. Outstanding!

I believe the proper procedure is clean first, then lightly abrade, then coat.

This has worked well for me for many years. Make two of your grip’s cork rings very tight fitting to the mandrel. The rest can fit close but easy on the mandrel. Press one of your tight fitting rings onto the mandrel. Now glue the rest to that one and finish off with the other very tight ring. Having a tight fitting ring on either end of the cork cylinder should suffice to hold the cylinder ver

6. Bug-Bond
FYI, Harrison Advance Rod Co. has stopped using thread to whip their guides on rod shafts. They are now using a glue called Bug-Bond to mount the guides. It will be interesting to see if this will become the new means for whipping rod guides onto a blank. I saw one of the rods today and the guide feet sit and look like they would on a transparent or threadless guide mount. Most people would not n

What would be wrong with using the larger ring if it accommodates the overall height you require? A larger ring only contains space you do not use. I cannot see it harming anything.

Just perchance, are you filling the tunnels alongside the guide foot with CP and epoxy? If not, this is more than likely where any moisture is entering the wrap.

Intrigued by the use of paints to do this. Epoxy is heavy and colored paints would seem to be more ideal. Any specifics you might care to share?

The popular @#$%& site is a good place to find Gudebrod threads. There is no shortage of it there!

Having a glass of wine on the deck while enjoying the evening breeze, I came across the International Rod Building Symbol while browsing some kit online. I suppose it has been a few years since it was introduced. I think I was ambivalent about it originally, but pondering it this evening I have begun to feel it is actually rather clever and well designed. Or it could just be the wine.

Could it be that the prototypes were bare and without any paint or clear coat? Maybe the weight difference is due to the paint or clear coat used on the production models. I would expect the weights will be changed to reflect the finished models at some point.

I think the hoods are there to provide a more secure hold on the reel foot and to prevent galvanic corrosion between the differing metals of the reel foot and reel seat hood.

Micro Guides On Flippin Rod Win FLW Tournament
Just for clarification, the win is credited to the fact that the rod had micro guides on it?

I modified an older wood lathe for the same type purpose. Mine was easy because the bed was of the pipe design so I was able to extend it by acquiring a longer length of heavy wall pipe. I fabricated bases that fit around the pipe and bolted my Pacific Bay rod supports to those new bases.
Not knowing what type lathe or bed you must work with, I would suggest fabricating some time of base, even

Tackleworks.org has been up and running for several years, I believe. That one has the directory.

No two will come out the same! You could do another with exactly the same sized thread and it will look totally different. The key is with the distortion or burnishing of the bottom layer.

JB has just explained the age old method for disjointing ferrules. Mostly older metal types but there should be no reason why this same method would not be equally effective on modern graphite ferrules.

As an advocate of what many choose to call "micro guides" it is apparent that my comments are above the comprehension of many of those who responded. I will retire from this topic with more than a bit of amusement.

So Mr. Sams is correct? Anything smaller than a size six, and in a single foot style, is to be considered a micro guide?

Please supply the accepted definition of "micro guide." Where is this to be found and do fishermen understand what size or type a guide must be to fall into that classification? If a fisherman purchases a rod with what he assumes or believes to be micro guides and it does not perform to his expectation, or he has some sort of trouble, real or imagined, the fault will be cast upon "

I would advise you to read my post a little more carefully. It is not the size of the guides I find a possible problem. It is the characterization which leads to generalizations and can indeed be used in reverse to bite itself in the behind. A little more careful reading is in order.

Any time a bandwagon comes along and you intend to jump upon it, you must have a name for it. The pity is that these things have a way of coming around to bite themselves in the behind!
St. Croix is pretty savvy when it comes to outfitting their rods of course. So I would expect they will not use these guides in any application where they are not appropriate.
