IMO and from my personal observations, putting the butt guide too far out from the reel allows the line to billow outward in a large radius. Line slap on the blank is indeed a problem on any rods where I have tried to move the butt guide too far out, or used a lower frame guide with a very large ring. The concept of getting the line under control quickly seems sound, provided you can keep it up a

I am amazed at how small you can go and still have excellent results. But at some point there will be diminishing returns in terms of ease of use and what you gain by going much smaller. The size 4 guides seem like a good compromise all the way around. They should be light enough to get you some benefit in casting performance.

It is my understanding that few factory built rods are build on the spine. So if spine had any real effect on casting distance, it would seem that hundreds of thousands of rods made each year would also fail to cast decently. I don't think that is the case. As much as we custom builders like to think we build a superior product in many ways, I do not think factory made rods cast poorly. At least

The carbon skinned grips I do turn out OK> but the weave in the fabric is rarely straight. It wanders a little back and forth and makes the grips look bad IMO. I have seen others on the photo page and many seem to have the same problem. I think it ruins what would elsewise be a very stunning grip. Tom and Mike's look straight. A few others too. What is the trick? Once I tighten my skin down I

Going smaller on the butt guide would push it even farther from the reel increasing line slap even more. I would have liked to have had a super high frame 40 or 30 but they do not make anything high enough to stay within a reasonable distance of a reel that large. The high frame surf 50 was the final choice not so much for the ring size but so I could keep it within 30" of the reel. Micro is

Do you heat the rod or the abalone? Even if just the abalone I might be leery of putting anything really hot on the blank. At some point that kind of heat could damage the rod blank. But I must admit to being totally uniformed about the process.

I am talking about the sound of the line resonating in the smaller guides with that size mono. Not anything about resonant frequency of the rod.

OK, I have done my testing and am ready to wrap. Working with a Quantum Boca 50, spool diameter rounded to 2.4 inches and planning to use Berkley Big Game 15lb mono. Blank is a Talon GSU1164, 11’6” rated for 3 to 6 oz. The main part of the set up fell like this- Choke guide locates at 65” per the 27X and this puts the butt guide at 31” using a standard high frame 40

I am preparing to try it. One gentleman here offered the suggestion to grind it even finer with a mortar and pestal. Good advice, I think and I plan to do this evening. I want a bit of glitter but without any apparent particles visible to the naked eye.

I found this- Should not affect blank sales or production but affect the name they are sold under.

If you wash the rod blank with a common household cleanser such as Comet or Old Dutch, you will end up with a matte finish. But try it on the butt section to make sure you like it. I found out the hard way? Edit- Do use plenty of water. I am not saying to use it dry.

While on the topic and for the sake of argument to make sure I have a good understanding, can anyone advise on the following two situations? 1- Two rods using the same reels and same line. But one rod is 7’ and one rod is 9’. Will the guide spacing and number differ? 2- When using a large HD saltwater spinner and a shorter 5’ or 6’ stand up type rod used for figh

I have been giving it a go on a Talon surf blank and so far find it very sensical and effective. Still waiting on some smaller runners and will try again once they arrive. My only thought is why wasn't this thought of sooner?

At one time the rage was tiny sparkle glitter in epoxy finish. I have an idea for a colored effect and wonder where I would find this glitter and if it can be had in solid colors rather than the multi colored stuff I have seen in the past.

Yes of course! My spool is 2.35" diameter which places the choke guide at 63.5" from the face of the spool. If I use a #40 butt guide it falls on the line path at 28 inches from the spool face. With a #50 it falls on the line path at 25 inches from the spool face. I am leaning towards using the #40 and have tested both and see little difference in casting performance. I think the #40 i

Consider the source. This is something I always think about. I have attended seminars that were truly excellent. I have attended seminars that were sub-par. Some presenters were not up to speed or were without sufficient grasp of the information to do it justice. I have seen one seminar on flocking that I did not think was anywhere near as good as the original flocking article that was contained

Suggestions are welcomed for a blank to make a light surf plugging rod. I would prefer one-piece or offset two-piece and like to toss from one to two ounce plugs. I think a nine footer is enough for what I want. At one time I had the heavier of the GUSA Surf Assassins and it was Perfect! I will assume these are no more and hope to find something similar. Any help is appreciated.

OK, the smallest thing I had was size 12 for the runners. No shock leader knot. It went smooth as silk. Followed the article and your advice with the 27X. Worked good. My best distance so far! I will order some size 10 runners and try that as well. Would like to go as small as I can. So far so good. Really pleased with this afternoon's work!!

I forgot to ask, I assume the 27X is for face spool diameter and not circumference? I believe I have ready everything correctly.

I have an older Talon surf blank that I am finally planning to build up into a nice surf spinning rod. My question regards the NCG and the reel and if you think this system will work OK on a medium duty surf rod. Casting distance IS a priority. The reel will be a very large Quantum BOCA 50 with a spool diameter of 2.35 inches. This is the largest spinning reel I have ever used. I have test fit
