Butt guide size and placement ?

Im confused on size and placement of butt guide on a spinning rod.822.5 rainshadow.I see a lot of guys using a 16 butt guide. If I use the 27x method that guide is pretty much predetermined if I stay in the recommended 18-22 in. from reel face.Looks to me like the only way to use a smaller ring ,which will be a shorter height ,is to move farther from reel face ,to stay in contact with my projected line path. Are there higher framed guides Im not aware of,BYAG,or are these guys using some method other than 27x? Thanks My rig is wanting a BYAG 25 and nothing wrong with using that ,just wondering how I could use something smaller to try.

I don't have a BYAG handy to measure but 20mm (ring diameter) American Tackle A-frame spinning guides sit 36mm above the rod blank and 20mm (ring diameter) ALPS spinning guides sit 38mm above the rod blank (to the outside of the ring.

I can’t speak for everyone but when I use a small ring butt guide I use a much taller frame style, a16 match guide is about as tall as a 25 Y series. These small ring tall frame match guides are about all I use anymore on spinning rods, you can get them either with ceramic rings or the Minima style, both work great when combined with very small running guides.

Remember that you can also bend/reshape the guide frame a bit to get yourself just a tad more height.

What would be wrong with using the larger ring if it accommodates the overall height you require? A larger ring only contains space you do not use. I cannot see it harming anything.

Barry there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.Thats how probably most people do it.A lot of people get good performance using a smaller guide and I am just curious how they do it and still stay in the ballpark of tried and proven ideas. If I dont try something different I will always stay the same.Im new at this and am definitely not set in my own way.

As Tom mentioned, bending the guide’s foot to achieve more height is an option. I typically modify Fuji TYSG’s, BLAG’s and TATSG’s to gain height as butt guides. Using braided line allows me to use 12’s.
I sometimes modify the guide following the butt guide if the spacing between the first 3 guides causes the diameters to be non-concentric (bulls-eye).
