I sold a fly rod to a person in Cincinnati, and she broke a guide on her first time out. I could save her shipping the rod back to me if there's someone that can repair the rod locally, and charge me for it. You can email me at d(dot)lester(at)verizon(dot)net if you can help. Thanks! Dave

Match the rod to the fly. Where I am, I use a 7 wt Winston BIIx on my local river, but the flies are not that big and bushy... a #6 clouser works great on the Raritan. But if it's the Delaware, an 8 wt med. fast ( I used a Batson RX7+ and a Sage RPL) is the ticket, because the flies (and the fish) are going to be bigger, a #2 clouser works great there., along with some pretty bushy deerhair fli

Ha! Been there, done that, got that t-shirt. After the SECOND time, I proceeded with mixing my rod bond, and after using it, took a little left over and rodbonded a cork ring to the top of the cork seal cap. No more mistaking that jar! Dave

I wrapped one with green main wraps, followed with 4 turns gudebrod sunburst and a single wrap of silver on the outer edge, without cp. The sunburst turned a nice orangeish-brown that matched well with the amboyna seat insert. I also used a dark amber agate stripper. It was alot of work, but the result was a stunning rod. Client was amazed and extremely pleased. dave

I second the Bauer, an MSL.5 would be just right. I sold a Galvan 2.5 and a Tioga 2, to buy the Bauer and an extra spool. Super light, and you absolutely have to try the drag to believe it. If you're a purist, they don't come any better than Hardy Flyweight. Those are my two reels for 2 and 3 weight lines. Dave

Thanks fellas. Mike, I have all the tools needed, I just wanted some dimensions so that I could order my components at one time. I have a nifty little Excel spreadsheet that fairly accurately estimates the winding check size, but I need butt and tip dimensions for it to work. I didn't want to have to wait the time it takes for the blank to arrive. Dave

Anyone have a spec sheet for a Winston BIIx 7wt 4 pc? Or, if you have a blank or rod, I need measurements for winding check and tip top. I emailed them 3 times over 3 days and got no response. I think they don't like me... Dave

I believe that Gudebrod 200 Sunburst is a match. I've also used Gudebrod 1892 Olive on SLTs, it's a nice complimentary color to the goldish blank color.

Still have my first rod, a Scott PowrPly 7'3 wt. I've since rebuilt it. It's a sweet little small stream rod. Made it nearly 20 years ago, rebuilt two years ago. New wraps, new seat. I get quite nostalgic when I fish it. dave

I built one of them, I use a 3 wt with it. For me, it's a little too stiff for a 2. I also have a 7'6" 4 wt and an 8' 5, both of those line correctly. Nice blanks. Dave

I am far from perfect. Sometimes I let a flaw go if it's my own personal equipment, but not if it's for a customer. BUT... If I'm impressed with the final product, then I feel it's good enough to sell. If the client points it out, I do it again. None of my clients have pointed out flaws. Yet. Have you seen some of the crap that passes QC at the BIG rodmakers (if they even have a QC d

I have BIIx spacing charts, if that'll help. I also have a WT 3 pc chart. Send me an email address. Dave

I do minor repairs for my local fly shop. A customer recently requested a new reel seat, switched from the cap and ring original on his decade old well-used custom rod to a flush mount uplock. Easy fix. When I took the rod in from the shop, I noticed three guides that needed replacement and one that needed a rewrap. I mentioned it, the shop got the okay from the client. When the rod was retu

I've seen that problem if I hadn't applied CP correctly and consistently. Some finish seepage into thread that isn't sealed will show up dark. Dave

That's exactly what I did. I ran a dremel sanding barrel across the top. It's like mortised without a mortise bit. I've also sanded with a sanding block an oval shape on one for use with an old Hardy reel. Some older Hardy's have a very thin reel foot, and that worked great. Needless to say, it has to be done before installation. (ask me how I know!) Dave

My two cents... I'm an amateur with barely three dozen rods under my belt, but because of the article in Rodmaker I now get perfectly level finish using a 30 rpm turner, and Flex Coat. I use Lite for the first coat for the penetration, and Regular for the second coat. My procedure is to add more than enough and allow the rod to sit a minute, wicking off the sags as they appear. Same goes for l

Thanks, fellas. I'm mainly concerned with stress being concentrated at the ends of the spigot, both female and male sections. As I was flexing the rod, and the insert flexes with the blank pretty well, so I guess it's not an issue. I was expecting a heavy blank, but this glass is as light as any carbon fiber blank I have. It had me concerned for the durability is all. Dave

I just received a Lamiglas 3pc 5 wt fiberglass fly blank, with spigot ferrules. I am very surprised how thin the walls are. In wrapping the ferrules, should I wrap past the end of the spigot on both male and female ends? That would be 2 inches or more. Should I reinforce the female end with a metal ring? What would you do? Dave

I purchased a small lot of misc. fly blanks, most are marked on the packaging or the blank itself (half of them are Diamondbacks), but this one, a three pc 9' with spigot ferrules, has no markings or label. How can I determine the line rating? Just by building it and casting with different lines to see what works best? Dave

Does anyone know anything about Cedar Rod Blanks? I have a 4 pc. IM6 in gloss green, the package label says "TCF86-5". I assume it's a 5 wt, it's definately 8'6". Any background or info on this would be great. Dave

Is this an older blank? I didn't see it on Sage's current site from the above link. It's here, though... Edit: Oops! It's there, I didn't see it. Different spacing than my link, very interesting! Dave

Funny thing, that. I didn't mean to imply that it's a poor quality blank; it isn't. It is definately a medium fast, but it seems to flex evenly from about 2/3's and up. It's just not what I wanted at the time. But, it certainly has it's place in my arsenal. I also have a 4wt 9' A2, it's a great pocket nympher! Dave

I have one. It's described as a medium fast, but it's very linear. I use mine for streamers. It's not the best roll caster, but it's powerful for a 5 wt. I haven't overlined it, but I'm sure it would cast a 6 wt well. I would have bought a different blank had I known more about it's qualities. I like a more flexible blank, especially at the tip, for roll casting. Dave

For applying finish I went to a 5 rpm to a 30 rpm, and might go faster still. For drying, I hand turn. I tried leaving a rod in the 30 rpm turner once, and it came out just fine. I don't use heavy coats, just two light coats, if it matters. I found that one coat finish jobs come out too sloppy for me. Dave
