How to determine line rating on unknown blank?

I purchased a small lot of misc. fly blanks, most are marked on the packaging or the blank itself (half of them are Diamondbacks), but this one, a three pc 9' with spigot ferrules, has no markings or label. How can I determine the line rating? Just by building it and casting with different lines to see what works best?

The Common Cents System will put you exactly on the money. All those articles are online now thanks to Tom. Check the top left of the sponsor column for more information. I've rated a few of my older bamboo rods with the system and it is amazing how well it works. To be honest, I only read the first one, part one, and it was enough to tell me what I needed to know and how to take the measurements. Re: How to determine line rating on unknown blank?

Thanks, Richard. I probably should have checked that a LONG time ago!

Yeah, go with the CC system. And it is a big help even on rods that are rated by the manf. I was looking for a 7 wt and built a Diamondback 6/7 blank. It felt awful soft and actually checked out to a 5 when I did the CC system. Wasted a lot of cork and time on that rod. Now I check them first. Edited 1 time(s).
