I spent my 1st couple of hours Saturday, at Morris Schlesinger's booth watching and talking with him at the expo. I also went to his lecture...and then went back to watch him turn acrylics.. maybe 4 + hours worth...and if I was closer I would pay the $35 to spend the day in High Point with him. If Woodcraft had showed up I probably would have bought me a lathe. Thanks again Tom for a great s

I do what Sam Stoner does, I heat the glue in the tip-top until the glue melts and the air trapped in it escapes. (Bubbles up) I kinda think that putting glue on the rod tip; then placing the tip on could potentially 'starve' the insides of the tip-top of glue. The action of placing a snug fitting tip-top on the melted glue rod tip would tend to push the glue down the rod and not let enough o

I use a 'dab' of epoxy and run the thin edge of the spatula against the edge of the thread. "Capillary action" (I think that's what they call it.) pulls the epoxy off the spatula and you end up with a nice even and straight line. That's if your thread lines are straight. With experience, your hand gets steadier and you can do it with a brush. Until then I hope this helps. Larry

I use a Sharpie and some holes drilled in a clear piece of plastic. Large hole for the 1st mark and small holes for the others. My 1st mark from the butt is 12", therafter every 3" out to 24". They come in handy for picture taking to confirm 'fish stories!" If you don't like them a bit of alcohol and they are gone. Sharpies come in a multitude of colors now days. Larry

Tom, Are you saying that you just epoxy...lower you brush in the U-40 and then pull your brush out when you are epoxying again? No drying? Which in my case maybe a couple of days or even a week before I need to epoxy. I have always used Acetone to clean my brushes and thoroughly dry them...ie let them sit for awhile to air dry. Are there any issues with the U-40 residue "contaminati

Walt, Check the level of your infeed table as well as you out feed table. They may need to be releveled. This sounds like the infeed table is not level and is canted towards the blades. When the end of the board leaves the infeed table, because it is not flat (lower at the blade end and higher at the feed end) it drops that few 10th's and cuts that shoulder. (this can happen with the out fee

Tom, Any one doing any bamboo fly rod stuff this coming show? Since the last show I have developed an interest in making some bamboo fly rods. You had someone last year doing a seminar...of course I missed it. Thank you. Larry Ohara

Best Western Downtown. Other than the no 'Hot-Water' issue in the mornings. (There was hot water in the evening.) It was a nice place, and convenient to the show. Though I had a personal vehicle and ‘chow’ was not an issue. I can see how it would be for those who did not have ‘wheels’. If they correct the lack of hot water problem…I would probably stay there again. Thanks for

I attended the seminar on Micro guides at NC. A question only recently came to me, but has anyone used these guides for fly rods? I think I understand the principal of the line whipping and hitting the regular guides as the line is cast and the use of Micro Guides to reduce this action. As was demonstrated at the show. I also know that when one fly fishes most of the line is already out of the

I just recently used it on a rod and it does not work. It cost me 10 hrs to strip the guides off. I spent a large amount of time asking guys at the NC show which one 'really' works. Bottom line...Everything but the Gudebrod. I have been successful with Flexcoat, but there are issue with it that is not to my liking...the white clumps for one. I purchased some others at the show and will

I am curious about these Switch rods. I am thinking of building one (10-11' 8/9wt). Is there anything different about building them that would be different than building a standard single handed fly rod? Are there specific types of reel seat and grips for these 'switch-rods?" Thanks, Larry

I 've received a number of Madiera thread spools in various colors. My question is how do you tension the threads on those large spools? My tensioner will not hold such a large spool. The thread does not seem to be a s strong as your normal Gudebrod thread (A-weight).

I use 'Round Cord Elastic'. StretchRite is the brand name. It comes in 5 yd packs at your local Sewing store. I was 'stealing' them from my wife. She bought me my own. I think it's <$1 for the 5 yds. I'm cheap. These work well for me. A bit better then the little rubberbands/ cut tubing. I alway forgot to put enough of them on the rod, or they were to small for the butt end, or to big for
