I don't think that number is terribly out of line. But you can likely do it with a guide or two less. Maybe. I sense the problem you're having is that with a very small spool reel and light line your choker guide falls a pretty good distance back from the tip of a rod that lone. That's as it should be with that reel and line. The additional guides you're having to use are distributing stress o

If you're happy with the distance you're getting and can reach whatever you need to reach, all else is really immaterial. But you asked, so I'd tell you that with most of my 6 foot rods in that class I can easily toss a lure beyond 100 feet. Which is really further than I can effectively fish a 6 foot rod anyway. .............

15575. Re: Epoxies
Epoxy formulators try to create epoxy systems that are tailored to the task at hand. I think you'd find most of the West Systems products to be very low build - even more so than most "lite" thread wrap epoxies. It would surely encapsulate your thread wraps, but you might find it less than extremely user friendly. I can also tell you for certain that their products are not very prone to

It wouldn't take much effort to mock up the rod, build it on the spine and try it. Then build it on the straightest axis and try that. Then build it on neither and try that. I doubt you'll be able to tell any difference, but either way at least you'd have your own first hand experience to go by. .................

The line (or lure) travels in the direction the rod tip is moving at the time of release. "Tracking" is a bit of mumbo jumbo for the most part. Turning or twisting around a central axis isn't going to cause casting inaccuracy. The only way to get the line (or lure) to go anywhere other than where you throw it is to have the tip travel in an arc. This is only really possible if you have

You can do it either way, but generally it's more common to assemble the handle first and then do the butt wrapping. The only other reason I can see for doing it the other way around would be if you want to hide the butt tie-off wrap under the foregrip or seat. The foregrip has never gotten in my way when doing any sort of butt wrap or weave. All you need is an inch in front of the foregrip an

It's unlikely you'll find a replacement section so there's no harm in attempting a repair. Done properly it'll work fine. Consult the article in the online library for help. Do to the location of the break you will have to go inside with an inner sleeve, however, in order to keep the ferrule functional. This is the only trouble spot but you might as well give it a shot. If you can't make it work

You're going to have to contact Papillo, although it doesn't sound like that paper is pliable enough for what you're trying to do. Decal Connection used to sell do-it-yourself water slide paper. They understand this business and I'd give them a call or shoot them an email. ..................

The new issue of RodMaker, Volume 12 #5 will mail in about 2 weeks. If you happen to be a subscriber, please check the numbers to the right of your name on your last mailing cover. They indicate the last issue of your subscription with a volume and issue number. If you see "12-4" your subscription has expired and you won't be getting the new one unless you renew pretty quickly. You are correct. It happens, but it's fairly rare. If it was all too commonplace, epoxies would not have remained on the market. No one would be able to use them. Obviously this isn't a blank check to use them carelessly or to disregard normal cautions, but used with common sense epoxies are reasonably safe. ...............

Removing weight from the tip isn't going to make it a buggy whip, but there will probably be a limit to how much you can remove before loss of strength or power become an issue. You may have to go about this the opposite way - keep the tip where it is and make the butt larger. Of course, that will result in a blank that is heavier overall, but you'll have more of the flex in the tip. ......

You would not use the spinning NGC (27X) with a spincast reel. A spincast rod is set up just like a conventional baitcasting rod. If you do a spiral wrap, don't confuse a "bumper guide" with transition guides. They don't serve the same purpose. The only way to tell if the seat is too high for you to reach the reel casting button with your thumb is to try it. ...................

Adding weight to the rod, particularly in the upper 1/2 of its length, has the same effect as if you were using a rod made from a lower modulus material to begin with. Let's say your car was too responsive - very quick to respond to throttle input or held the corners too well. Toss a few 50lb sacks of concrete in the back seat and trunk and you'll slow things down all the way around. In effec

The orders that have already come in will also get 7 issues instead of the 6 originally advertised. Several

Larry, I'd make one suggestion to you - move up a line size on your graphite rod and try it that way. Graphite rods should be easy and pleasant to cast, all day long. I fish with a lot of guys and when somebody talks about their graphite rod requiring better timing or making them tired I find that they usually don't have the correct line on the rod for what they're doing. A graphite rod should

If you read the RodMaker article ferrule wraps, where we talked to and printed the quotes from many of the rod designers from places like Seeker, Sage. St. Croix, Loomis, CTS, etc., you'll find that most no longer recommend a thread wrap of any kind on their ferrules. But unless you know for sure that your ferrule doesn't need one, I'd make one. It certainly isn't going to hurt anything. .....

Most of my fishing buddies use graphite rods and almost all of them cast with a very wide loop (they drop back too far on their backcasts and the rod tip travels in an arc). A wide loop is easy to make with any rod. As far as overloading a rod, power is not dictated by material any more than action is. You can build glass rods that have just as much power as graphite rods. In fact, the most

Walt, If the respective tapers are the same then the actions will be the same. I think you're confusing action with speed. Where a rod initially flexes is not at all dependent on the material it's made from. How quickly it reacts and recovers, of course, has a great deal to do with both taper and the material involved. And, a graphite rod will load just as easily as a glass or bamboo rod p

The thing to keep in mind, is that the gentlemen from years past who were considered great bamboo rod makers were working with bamboo (instead of ash, greenheart or cedar) because it offered the best stiffness to weight ratio in a rod building material at that time. If carbon fiber had been available then, that's what they would have been working with. ......................

I didn't know that reel drag ratings were given for rods. If they are, I'd agree that they're most likely subjective based on what the rod manufacturer feels is the maximum deadlift capacity of the rod. ..............
