A careless moment lead to a break on the mid section 1/4" below the top ferrule of my G Loomis Mega Saltwater rod 1088/9 3M (GL3 ). Its out of production & although G Loomis will replace with like, it means scrapping a rod I put a lot of hours into & had come to really appreciate. Does anyone out there know where I could get a replacement section?
Do you think a repair is possible in that high stressed area of the rod? Also the breakage made me realise how quickly a trip can end without a back-up, so suggestions on lower cost (so I can afford two) but decent performance blanks would also be appreciated. Thanks in anticipation. Mike Crichton Re: Help with Broken GLoomis MegaSaltwater Fly Blank

I'd look at the TFO TiCr or TiCrx for the backup rods. Re: Help with Broken GLoomis MegaSaltwater Fly Blank

It's unlikely you'll find a replacement section so there's no harm in attempting a repair. Done properly it'll work fine. Consult the article in the online library for help. Do to the location of the break you will have to go inside with an inner sleeve, however, in order to keep the ferrule functional. This is the only trouble spot but you might as well give it a shot. If you can't make it work you're no worse off than you are now.

Mike,
Since the break is only an inch above the top ferrule, I would do the following. I would find a blank section of similar wall thickness and style as your current blank. i.e. look for a section that may be trimmed so that it will replace that section. Trim it as necessary to be sure that you have an excellent fit to join the two pieces and make a new joint. I would then trim this section to about 12 inches. Finally, I would trim off the current broken rod the same 12 inches so that you now have the break about 12 inches in front of the top joint. Then, I would go ahead and use an inside and outside piece of blank section to properly repair the break. Wrap the ferrule as you would have done with the original rod, wrap the ends of the spliced area, rewrap any guides that may have been moved, recoat and you will have a rod that is good to go. I think that if you had the rod break at only an inch above the top joint, there simply isn't enough material - either on the inside or outside of the rod to create a good joint. But, by moving the break to 12 inchs or so above the top joint, you can then easily repair the rod properly with no long term effects. Good luck Roger Re: Help with Broken GLoomis MegaSaltwater Fly Blank

Guys,
Thanks for the help, & encouragement. All my questions answered, & you're right Tom, I may as well give it a shot. Roger, great back up plan if a simple repair doesn't hold up. Billy, great to hear from you. I've been fine thanks. You also I hope. Work got a bit busy so I quit building to do a bit more fishing, & I don't have any new projects. The good part is tis breakage will get me back into it. I kind of ran out of ideas on the colored grips, but if you're a fan of any of the NE Football teams, I could try making you one in their colors. All the best, Mike Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
