I'm building a split grip rod for topwater bass fishing right now. I actually shortened the handle because I get tired of smacking the rod butt into my sid when walking topwater luers. I got real creative with the foregrip and turned a big groove in it to act almost like a second trigger. The butt section is only about 2" long and the grip behind the reel seat is 3". I'll post some pics

I agree with you Bill. It seems the guys around where I live love WalMart rods and they think Bass Pro rods are the only thing worth spending a little more for. I was interested to see how this evolved for some and then others who actively pursued it. Big difference there. Lotsa good suggestion and ideas. I can relate to the finicky (sp?) buyer. I shot competitive trap for many years and woul

I don't feel comfortable enough at this point to really sell my rods, but looking toward the future, how did you guys come about building a customer base and finding rod building/repair work? I'm sure a lot is referral, but what suggestions do you have for getting your name and rods out there for people to buy and come to you for repairs?

When you say with a coffee filter, do you just use that like an applicator? Much like you would a rag when applying stain to a piece of wood?

Ok.. I've read through all the various posts, or a large number of them. What is the point of Permagloss? Why would I use it over normal epoxy? If I apply it straight to wraps, should I still use CP? I think one of my problems is there was so much out there on it, I'm getting confused. A simple quick explanation would be great. Thanks for your patience on this one!

I like the look. I assume different colors would be available? I'd love to see this on split grips... really losing weight then.

Tom, I know the site says the seminars will be annouced Aug29th, but how are the seminars scheduled? Are there several seminars running concurrently? Are the some of the seminars repeated, so if you miss it, you can catch it later? Just wondering. Pretty excited about coming up.

I'm more interested in casting rods as I do zero with fly rods. Anything out there on that? I'll give a read though. Maybe something can translate.

Did a search and found stuff about fly rods, but for casting rigs, how would you compare St Croix, GLoomis, Rainshadow and Lamiglass? Seen individual comments on each, but not collective comparsion from those with experience. How do the different grades compare? (ex. Is a St Croix SC5 comparable to a Loomis GLX to a Lamiglass XMG50?) I realize personal preference plays in and then intended app

Not sure what the policy is on posting stuff like this, but I found it really interesting. Obviously the impact is not just to the cork used with wine bottles. Copy and paste in your browser:

Difference there in action and tip. The rod I'm looking at is a medium action but has a Xfast tip. I've always preferred a faster tip for topwater due to throwing lighter baits. I'm fishing clear water so my baits are downsized, line is downsized, but I'm needing to make long casts because the fish spook easily in shallow water. I find the faster tip affords me the ability to cast further on t

You know I was thinking last night... this must be a lifestyle for Tom Kirkman. Web site, magazine, expo, shop, etc... I'm sure many others eat, sleep, and breathe it as well. Coming from other hobbies though, it's great to have open access to some of the people that are really the leaders/innovators/etc in the field. So many people in other ventures refuse to share information. From my fi

Mike, what was the axis order for your guides? (0, bumper, 180, etc?) I like the idea of starting with a 10. How many guides total? I'm assuming 2-3 double foot then the rest single? I figured I would go with the 3C as I really don't need as much sensitivity for topwater and save a couple $ with only gaining .2 ounces in the 4C. For a new worm rod though, I'm going to look at the 4C. How

I'm going to build a topwater rod, fishing gunfish 85 and small buzzbaits mainly with it. Looking at using a St Croix 3C68MXT (6'8" Med Action XFast Tip 8-14 LB test 3/16 - 5/8 oz lure). Going split grip and exposed bank seat. I'm planning on using a Pflueger President baitcaster and 10# mono. Guide suggestions and sizes? I am mainly looking for lightweight (usually fish topwater

I'm using flexcoat CP and it seems to really take the luster out of my wraps. Is there something I am doing wrong? They appear dull and darker. Too much CP maybe? Should it look ok once I add the epoxy? Figured I would ask first because I don't want to epoxy this rod. I'd rather rewrap and do the CP correct and have a good looking rod.

Anyone know who sells them? I saw that Batson makes them, but haven't seen them on any websites. I have access to a lathe, but thought I might try the premade route first before investing in mandrels, etc.

I have a blank with 8.5 tip. I can find 8 and 9 tip tops. No 8.5. Would it be better to take down the tip to the 8 (something says no here) or build it up to use the #9 tip? If building it up, what is the best material for underneath the tip for build up? Thanks for the advice in advance - so much for me to learn and this all really helps!

I've been using some metallic markers from my local office store. I think they are Rose Art brand. They came in a five pack and are silver, gold, blue, purple, and one other color. All metallic colors. One end is fat and one end is extra fine, more like a pen, but no roller. I like them. And when I mess up, a little alcohol and the marker wipes off and I start over.

Off topic a little, how do they GUSA blanks compare to say a Loomis or St Croix. I have experience with those. I haven't ordered a GUSA blank yet because I really didn't know much about them. Truthfully, where I am, you pretty much only see Bass Pro brand rods and other off the rack from the sporting goods stores rods. You see very few hand made rods. Mainly freshwater and relatively rural area.

I saw some pictures of rods on the photopost that had no foregrip. How do you finish off the front end of the reel seat so that it looks clean? None of the pictures I saw really showed it where you could tell. Interested in doing that, but wanted to figure out how first. Thanks!

Does anyone know if the sulky rayon thread is good for wraps? I found it at my location Hobby Lobby at a pretty good price. They have the 30 and 40 wt. and just about every single color. Wasn't sure how these weights compared to size A, etc. Thanks!
