Gary : I'd agree with you, but only to a point with what I have seen. St. Croix does descriptions as well on their SCIV series bass rods. Still doesn't say advantages/disadvantages compared to other blanks. Plus how would I know the performance of a Loomis blank compared to another brand? Seems the CCS data is pretty slim on bass rod blanks, so that is not terribly helpful. Doesn't tell me thing

Great idea Bob! That's what caused me to ask the question. I know I can't try everything out there so hearing what others experience broadens what I think about and consider trying. I figured that out fast at the rod expo seeing all the different blanks. Any thought that maybe the bass rods are a hot topic because more bass fisherman are looking at custom rods now? Anyway, here's one of my

I was disappointed Forhan's seminar on technique specific bass rods was cancelled at the Rod Expo. :( Anyone out there know where a good summary description of technique specific bass rods is or care to take a stab at it? I know what I like and works for me, but I'd love to see something written up from some guys that have much more experience building rods than myself and can incorporate t

One thing to consider is not going with an all graphite blank. There's an article in this month's Bassin' or BassMaster that talks about how VanDam switched over to a glass tipped or maybe all glass rod. Basically the slower rod helps a crankbait "do it's job" and it's also not as reactive as all graphite so there's more give when you're running a crank through stumps, brushpiles, etc.

If you use one of Andy Dear's mandrels, they are 18" long. I have someone else turn my grips for me and when I bought him one of these mandrels, he was very appreciative. Said they work great. You can get them from fishsticks (sponsor on left). I just bought one mandrel that is the same size as all the cork ring ID I buy (1/4") and then I just ream them out. Works better for me since

Are you building it yourself and then transferring it to a server or using a company that hosts and you develop it their application? Some of the companies have really good tools already built into their packages that are really easy to use, especially if you aren't versed in web development.

This kind of discussion does take this craft to a whole new level and always will… I think that is the point of the whole point of tounament bass fishing. We're out there fishing the same spots, the same time (at least day), for the same fish. Who ca

Maybe someone can weigh in on which guides tend to load up more. I just dont see the butt section guides getting the same torque and pressure the end guides do. But then again, I am not a physics person nor have I conducted formal tests. You could be right. Wouldn't going with more SFs with a forhan wrap help the horizontal pull issue? Sounds like the DFs are getting pulled out one way then t

Bill, Why would you do more than one DF guide on a bass rod? Seems like overkill to me. With the guides pulling off, if you're using a spiral, the end of the guide foot on those first few SF guides (that are probably getting the most stress) is pressing against the blank when loaded rather than being pulled away from it. While I'm not a physics person, I would think this would allow greate

Great comments Duane. I concur 100%. Ked, you took the feedback like a champ. In my experience, people who can ask for feedback and take whatever comes at them so well usually do well. Some people can give constructive criticism and some have less regard for saying things tactfully. I do have a question for you, what type of epoxy were you using? There is one particular epoxy I've used tha

When I made my first couple rods, I tried handwriting words. Well, my handwriting is already bad, and add that to a blank surface and you get disaster. I found that for the couple extra bucks, the waterslides from Decal Connection (a sponsor) were well worth it. Plenty of fonts, several colors, speedy service, and follow the directions on their site and they come out great. Just makes the rod loo

I spent a good bit of time with Steve talking through these rods and guides. The time he spent with me was absolutely invaluable. And that senko rod was beyond incredible. I now have a new personal goal for rod performance. I did my first rod with small guides last night. It's a 3C66MF that I plan to use to throw a fluke (already had the handle and seat mounted and ready for guides). I did 6DF

Scott, Trust me, I know! Fish local club, started BFL, and on Skeeter Team so pretty familiar with bass fishing. You should have seen what I was driving my boat through two weekends ago... and that was for fun fishing! I just thought the article was funny given the huge debates put here about hooksets, etc. I won't mention the other article I came across where it talks about how to set t

You're going to love this one... I just got my new Bassmaster magazine... Article: "10 Bad Mistakes BASSers Make" MIstake #6: : "They don't properly fight fish. Martens is also a fanatic about fighting fish properly once you have them hooked. "Too many fisherman don't keep good pressure on the fish," he says. "They should be reeling as hard as the line and hook

Man, why's my post gotta be used as the example? LOL The one thing I have noticed is that a lot of the bass guys out there really see their rods as tools wanting them bare bones (no crosswraps, etc) - definitely the preference around here. Yes, bass fishermen are tough on their stuff, but at the same time as whole are an incredibly brand loyal group which makes them valuable customers. Wat

Question.. I only have two tickets and it will be me, wife and daughter. Don't have a babysitter, so I'm assuming there will be no problem with bringing the little one along to the recpetion for a bit. And in case you've forgotten, the little one thinks she can wrap a rod as well.

Agreed. Local circuits and BFL. 15 - 17# test, 1/2oz jig. He complained about breaking Loomis GLXs and he likes the Kistler helium, but he's broken one of those as well. He understands he breaks rods with the way he sets the hook, he's just decided he doesn't want to pay high dollar for another. He isn't expecting a bulletproof rod. Just something that if he breaks it, he doesn't feels as bad

I've got someone wanting a rod with "backbone" to set the hook on a jig n pig. He felt the 4C66MHF didn't have enough "backbone". We're talking about someone who needs something strong enough to handle those hook jarring sets without breaking as well. (I know the debate about hooksets on bass) Suggestions on something in the 7' range with good sensitivity and a fast tip

Joe, Which rodmaker article are you referring to? There are several on guide set up. Is there one that addresses small guides specifically? I looked in the library at article topics and didn't see a specific one, just the normal guide placement articles.
