I won't represent this as completely authoritative, but just as my experience. Things happen when you are on the water. The smallest ring size that passes a knot carefully tied the day before may have trouble passing the connection you make on the water to deal with an abraded leader butt, or whatever else comes along. There is a lot of pressure to possess the ninth degree of rod performance, and

Thanks in advance everyone. One of the posts in response to Scott's trouble with bubbles got me thinking about this. I have built a few rods for my own use, and expect o keep building more. I have settled on using Flexcoat epoxy and CP. I have a Flex Coat 18 rpm motor that I use when applying epoxy and turning rods to cure. How do you regularly get a good application of epoxy on wraps near guide

James, I have several 3 and 4 peice rods. I can find no reason why two or more joints contributes anything negative to the way those rods cast or fish. When rods were solid fiberglass or bamboo, the number of ferrules was an issue. Not anymore. Old ideas die hard!

Batson Forecast RX6 SB841-3 Clear Gloss 7'0" 3 6-12lb. 1/8 - 3/8oz. 0.605 5.5 Fast Medium-Light
I am working on my third 3 piece spinning rod using Batson's blanks. Great products, people and dealers. A friend built one on the blank referenced here and its a delight for bass and trout fishing here on the Finger Lakes. Its 6 inches shorter than what you are asking for. I am occasionaly ro

Gary,
I build one or two rods a year for myself, so my point is, I dont have much technical experience. I built an ultra light spinning rod using the system that Alex advocates, and it was easy and very effective. I figured the size of the largest guide based on the reel I planned to use, and bought one or two more guides than I needed. It added maybe $4 to the cost of my project, and I have s

Some friends in a manufacturing plant get the same cermaic cylinders that were taken from used thermocouples of some sort.

Kerry, thanks for the response! So XTCVS3TLG gets me the SS 316, PVD coated, but without chrome? I follow it now, I think. Great stuff, I love your mega dealer concept too.

Hello all, and thanks for your help now and in the past. I am going to build a spinning rod I will use at times for inshore saltwater fishing. I am looking at Batson's VSR guides. For corrosion resistance, would I be better to chose the double black chromed guide, BVS3TLG , the polished and unplated SS316 guide, XVS3TLG, or something else? In a related question, why are the TiCH PVD guides in the

Ben, I built up that same blank last year. It casts the newer Cortland Tarpon 10 wt. intermediate tip line line like a dream. That is, for me, in the situation I was using it, casting to tarpon down in the Keys. I could carry 50 feet of line plus an awkward leader and big fly, in the air and shoot a bunch more. If you go by the common cents method, the rod is significantly under rated by the manu

Lynn,
This is my experience...
I have 5 rods between 8 and 12 wt I have built up and fished a lot. On all but one, I used two double foot strippers, a 16 and a 12, followed by one single foot 10, and the rest 8's out to the end. One has a 20 and a 16 double foot, a 12 single foot and 8's out to the end. I will not put a size 20 stripper on a fly rod again.
I've never had a wind knot or t

I have been considering wrapping up a new rod on this blank, I have two on the older pearl brown blanks. Does anyone have recent experiences with these? I wonder if the blank action might have changed any with the ART construction, or what the finish is like. The biggest down side I found on the ones I have now is the finish is not very durable or attractive. Thanks all!

Builders of tradtional style bows use Titebond for glueing laminations together, and other wood to wood applications. Might be a better choice than two part epoxy for your application.

A few years ago, I was helped identifying and valuing a rather unusual cane rod found in the attic of my father's home from a maker/restorer named JD Wagner. I just found his website, Good luck!

I plan to build an ultralight spinning rod to fish for perch and other panfish. I understand the concept system and plan to use it in building this rod. I understand some of you are using single foot fly guides towards the end of the rod, I assume past the location of the intersection guide. As I read the article in this website's library page on the concept system, I almost need an array of guid

Scott, thanks for mentioning that. If we need to go with a 2 piece blank, then that's the way it is.

I will be building some new rods this winter with two friends. One of the rods we want to build will be for trips we make each year to the Keys and Bahamas. We want a spinning rod for throwing live crabs to permit. Looking for something that breaks down to three pieces, for line up to 20 (maybe 25 pounds tops) and with enough backbone to fight the fish quickly. The heavier spinning rods we have u

As other people posting response have suggested, it all depends on what you are going to be doing with that big 12 wt. stick. If you read posts on popular saltwater forums like the flyfisherman.com and Dan Blanton bulletin boards, you get the feeling that people are buying reels that hold a lot more backing than they will ever spool off the reel (me included). Dont forgot though, that the line th

Some of the English warbows had draw weights of 175 pounds. Those bows were not shot at a particular target, but rather like a mortar. The arrows were shot up in the air and rained down on the enemy. The English had a law that every able bodied man must keep a bow and practice with it. Try Tradtional Archery or Primitive Archer magazines for more info.

There are some interesting analogies here. A tradtional longbow unloads its energy more slowly than a crossbow or compound bow. It acts over a greater distance unloading this energy. Ideally 100 percent of the energy is transmitted to the projectile (arrow). A compound bow unloads energy very quickly over a shorter distance. A crossbow unloads over an even shorter distance. From a physics standpo

I may have posted here on a similar issue. I used U-40 Ferrule Lube on an SC-V rod. it damaged the finish on the rod in a real hurry! I used Permagloss on that rod as well as another without an incident related to the Permagloss though.

I am going to build myself a new 10 wt using the TFO TiCrX blank. Its an odd shade of blue, and would be glad to hear what thread colors match well. I've been in the habit of not using color preserver, by the way. I like the effect, but if I was pleased by a color idea that depended on CP I could go back. Thanks.
