The Matagi winding checks (HTWC) that Merrick stock are pretty nice, a bit expensive, but they look great.

Thanks for the update Tim. Looks like I won't be having that problem, living in sunny Queensland in Australia.

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like the TLSG's are the go since they the TSG's are only marginally cheaper. Tom, yes it would be interesting to see a photo of a grooved recoil guide that wasn't cut with a file (I think Raymond Adams did this test and posted it on the photos site). Also it seems that fly fisherman are the one's that have apparently grooved them, so I wonder if its the dir

Apparently this issue will be tackled in the next issue of RodMaker magazine according to Tom in one of his posts regarding Threadless wraps.

Hi Guys, For my current rod, I was planning on using Recoils until I heard the grooving possibilities, so I've decided to go back to conventional guides. For the bottom section of the rod (6' 6" spinning rod) I'll be using Fuji TATSG (size 20, size 12 and size 8). For the top section, I'm not sure which of the TLSG or TSG guides I should be using (size 7 and 2 x size 6). Apparently t

Thanks Scott, I'll keep an eye out for it. I don't think I'll find that exact one out here though, we have a pretty small range of products available here compared to you guys in the States.

I use Rodbond after hearing about others success using it to plug the male ferrules.

Ah ok, that makes sense now. I guess I'll try finding some slightly slower setting epoxy (I only have 5 minute and 24 hour) as I'll need a little time to align all the guides. I guess that's why the sumo glue was a possible choice since it sets in 30 minutes.

Hi Tom, Thanks for the reply. I was under the impression that Loctite Sumo 30 minute glue was the stuff to use under the guide feet for threadless guides (as per the picture from Bill stevens in the photo section)? I will be buying Rodmaker from Ian Miller, but wanted to get everything at the same time so I'm not waiting for bits and pieces to arrive before putting my next rod together. T

Hi, Do any of the sponsors carry sumo glue? I'm trying to get my hands on some to try the threadless wraps, but can't find anyone online that stocks the glue and will ship to Australia. Thanks.

That's why I plan on using a conventional Silicon Carbide tip (titanium frame) and stripper guide (titanium frame Fuji TATSG for lightness) when I'm using recoils on my next rod. The tip is where the most friction/heat is generated, so I think its better especially since I'll be using very light line on it and the last thing I want is for any heat to damage the line.

Thanks mate, I totally forgot about that I actually already have the full japanese catalogue. They've provided perfect measurements for me to make my own template.

Thanks Billy and Ted. I didn't see your posts when I replied, but you've both given me ideas. I think combining both Ted's template idea with Billy's drum sander would work well. The drum sander will ensure that the entire grip is cut flat at the same time, and the template would be used to see when to stop the sanding. Now to the next question, does anyone have a template for the Fuji S

Thanks for the replies guys, but I think you've misunderstood what I mean, or I didn't communicate it a little better. Cutting (straight lines) or shaping the grip is fine, but I need to be able to cut the curve for the SBS seat, and obviously I can't spin it in a lathe to do this cut since its a kind of S shaped along the length of the grip. I'm trying to find a picture of the Fuji SBS ree

Hey guys, Did a search but came up empty-handed. I'm trying to cut my EVA foam grips to suit the rear section of the Fuji SBS reel seat and am having trouble getting a perfectly fitting grip. My efforts with the belt sander turned out ok, but it was hard work and not 100% perfect (most people wouldn't notice, but I do). So, my question is, has anyone use Nichrome wire to cut an EVA grip

Thanks for the replies guys. Does anyone know or can measure the total height of the Fuji 40HH guide? I just want to know if it is significantly higher than the BMNAG 40 guide that I'm currently using and whether its worth the effort to change it over to the high frame guide. Thanks,

Hi, I'm after some opinions on a high frame size 40 guide. I'm currently using a size 40 Fuji BMNAG, but find that the height it not high enough for my application. I don't really care who makes it, or what type of guide, but preferably, it'd be nice if the frame was black and the ring was at least as slick and hard as the Fuji Alconite. Thanks.

I've never had an issue mixing smaller quantities and like Danny above, I've mixed as little as 1/2cc of ThreadMaster. I too hate to waste it (since it costs to much to ship it to me). The trick for me is to use a syringe to measure the two parts.

Here I was thinking it must have been my technique that causes the labels to come off quite quickly. These days the first thing I do is ensure it is stuck down well. They come barely stuck on from the factory. Tom is corrrect with the spokes and number of empty areas that the sticker cannot stick to, but you'd think that A) the factory could get them on straight which would help a little

I have to add my two cents as well. I've got a number of the Mooseskin EVA grips from ACK Fishing also and found that they are definately harder and more easier to shape than the other EVA grips that I've previously used (from a variety of different shops). In terms of longevity, well I can't answer that yet as I haven't used it long enough, but at this stage I would say it would be just as goo

3M are the manufacturers of Scotchbrite. I think the teal coloured ones are the ones you use for normal dishwashing as they are the ones I find in my supermarket. They aren't as harsh as the green ones.

Curtis, I disagree that a 40mm stripper guide is too large IF we are talking about a standard 12-13ft surf rod that we typically use here. I personally wouldnt go any smaller than a 40 for the standard 6-6.5" diameter alveys. Of course, if we are talking about using a 4-5" alvey on a 8-10ft estuary rod, then yes 40mm is a little on the large size and probably a 30mm would be the

Hey Charles, Don't get me wrong about the older alvey's. I've still got a few bakelite alveys (although they've seen better days) and the "newer" fibreglass and steel backplate alveys. It's just when I'm standing in the surf for a few hours straight, the lighter the gear the better for me.

Martin, For a source of open runners, click on the link on the left for The Rod Works. They are based here in Australia and Ross will have those open runners. Have a look at the alvey website for more details regarding the different reels. www.alvey.com.au - for the Australian website and www.alveyusa.com for the US version. Take a look at the 6500BCV model as its a very good all-rounde

No they're typically used for surf rods that have a butt diameter too large for a pipe reel seat to fit. Others like the minimalist look of them also.

I've shopped with a number of the sponsors on the left (ACK Fishing, Anglers Workshop, The Rod Works, @#$%&, FishSticks4U, and MudHole) and have had exceptional dealings with them, but unfortunately, no

I'm suprised that this company's reel seats haven't been mentioned more on this forum (or was it a matter of availability in the US?). I've used a couple 32mm ID aluminium reel seat from Alps for my surf rods and they are very nice reel seats and they come in a bunch of different colours (in the smaller sizes there tends to be more available in Oz).
