In Ralph O'Quinn's article "Surface Preparation" he refers to Scotchbrite by # s-7448 and S-7446 both in grey. I have checked at Target and K-Mart and can not find any refernce to numbers, nor do I find Scotchbrite in grey. Am I looking in the wrong place? and how improtant is color?

Somewhat important because the color tells you the coarseness of the pad. Try an automotive body supply company or a better hardware store. Nearly all woodworking stores also carry them.

Red color = corse sanding/scuffing (mainly used for re-painting)
Grey color = fine sanding/scuffing (mainly used for clear coating over existing clear coats) Any automotive paint store carrys both, you can even buy by the case. The grey = about a 1200grit sandpaper and the red = about a 400-60grit paper (yes I managed a paint/body shop for many years :) ) DR Re: Scotchbrite

I only found some no-scratch Scotchbrite blue/teal pads. They didn't have any number designation on them. The local hardware store had 3m products but no scotchbrite stuff. Re: Scotchbrite

3M are the manufacturers of Scotchbrite.
I think the teal coloured ones are the ones you use for normal dishwashing as they are the ones I find in my supermarket. They aren't as harsh as the green ones. Re: Scotchbrite

Jimmy hit it on the nailhead - if MSC doesn't have it, it's not available.

Re- Scotchbrite- I also looked for this product at Lowes. I could only find Scotchbrite in the green but I did find a 3M product of the same type material, gray in color, that is called "Between Coats Finishing Pads". It says it replaces "00" steel wool (Product # is 10144NA). Could this be equivalent to the Scotchbrite product? I need to do some slight re-working on a few guides myself.
Edit- I looked closely at these pads and they have "Scotch-Brite" lightly imprinted on them in white- but it wasnt on the package label. Now- to figure out if all gray pads are the same or if they have a couple fineness levels in gray color(?) Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/10/2006 09:52PM by B. E. Salfen.
