Wrapping a Fuji plate seat on a surf rod, just wondered if there is a preferred slide up/down orientation?
Thanks! Mike

Many, many thanks Tom! I just tied a short length of braid between a couple dowels (for handles) and it works fantastic. You just saved me a ton of time and I really appreciate your help -- Again, Thanks a bunch! Mike

Thanks Tom - will attempt that first before monkeying around with any form of heat!

Thanks John, appreciated. It's really being stubborn at the moment, I've even tried some gentle heat from an alcohol lamp in an attempt to loosen it without much luck...will just keep pickin' away though!

125. Removing Cork Tape
A new adventure for this freshwater rodbuilder -- Struggling to remove about 3 - 4' of cork grip tape from a fiberglass surf rod, wondered if a heat gun be beneficial to lightly warm it up for easier peeling (?).
Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated - Many Thanks!

Thanks again everyone, this helps a bunch and I'll do some more research into the Penn St products. A decent 4-jaw would be nice, I would like to dive into other projects when comfortable, bowls, bats, etc. Have a great day, appreciated - Mike

Just purchased a Delta 46-460 lathe mostly for grip turning and not sure of which chuck to buy (Nova G3, 3-jaw, 4-jaw, mini?). So many options it seems, much different from my Grizzly hobby lathe days! Mainly turn cork on a 1/4" mandrel but also plan to turn reel seats, acrylic inserts, etc. Thanks for any and all suggestions - very appreciated!

Thanks very much Roger and Bill!
Actually Roger, I was contemplating switching to a motor when I found an old (but very quiet!) 1/2hp motor last weekend with a pulley attached. My gears then began turning! I finally found a couple compatible drills at a local shop last night, ranging from $50 - $90, but I may go the motor route instead, just for durability and the noise factor. Another opti

...just wondered if anyone knows of a replacement drill for a Grizzly Hobby Lathe? maybe a Dewalt DW235G?
Many thanks!

Thank you Ken and Roger, appreciated. I've been using a dremel cutoff wheel with good luck but don't trust my shaky hands anymore!

Thanks Roger, I've been looking at this same saw for quite some time. Clicked your second link for the abrasive discs and the saw popped up again. (Will a 3" wheel fit this?, mentions that it comes with a 2" blade.)
Thanks! Mike

Still using one after many years, works just fine for turning and boring cork. I wish Grizzly still offered their 1/2" drill that fit it well though, on my third drill.

Wonderful blank Bob, thank you! Dumb me never thought of it - actually I just built a couple of these blanks up spiral-wrapped for jigging lake trout.

First time build for this style rod, I searched the archives, but little luck: I'm looking for a recommendation for a fantastic Pitching rod blank, 7', heavy power, 3/8 -1/2oz lures, with a bit of tip flex. All recommendations very much appreciated - Many, many Thanks!!!

posted one on the photo page that came out really nice - used a medium shade of green Madeira for the top thread.

Looking very forward to using my XMB843 for another season of jigging up deep lake trout. Quickly became a personal favorite rod for that use last summer, no negative issues experienced, durability or otherwise.

Thanks Sean, sounds great - I really appreciate your help! Having a helper aid in this task makes a lot more sense than my original "heat, rotate, tug" plan. This one instance has changed my view of ever using 5min epoxy again for tips - it's tip top cement from now on! Thanks again, Mike

After several years of using FC 5min epoxy to adhere tip tops, I now need to remove one. Is there a safe (no blank damage) method to do this?
Many thanks, Mike

Chuck, the collet/clamp opening (measured with drill removed) is approx 43mm, my 1/2" Grizzly drill collet is just a hair over 42mm.

I use the same lathe/drill setup Bill - I recently called to order another corded, 1/2" drill (model H0777) for it from Grizzly and was told that they were recently discontinued.

Thanks for the helpful replies, much appreciated. I'll stick with the bumper wrap.

Thanks Peter, you're probably right -- I think I have a larger bend envisioned in the butt-end of the rod than will exist in reality!

Venturing into a downrigger rod build (RDR86MH) -- I've been using the single 90deg "bumper" wrap with success on most baitcasters, but wondered if a Forhan or other type of extended transitional wrap might be better suited for these limber, slower-actioned downrigger rods. Thanks for any recommendations, much appreciated!

I haven't experimented with threadless wraps (yet), but routinely use silk thread (sans cp) to wrap micros now. Must be ballpark to what PG provides, this also results in a transparent, or threadless effect.
