Thanks Tom, I understand the setup based on the Rodmaker article, I just wondered what would look pleasing to the eye for the style/ring of the bumper in this case -transitioning from an red-ringed stripper to alconite running guides.

Thinking about using a size 10 or 12 red-ringed agate or agatine stripping guide and utilizing the bumper concept for transitioning the line under a graphite casting blank (7' SCIII). Aesthetically thinking, would you think the bumper guide need be a similar-ringed, double-foot agate guide too? I was going to use a clnag alconite if not. (I have no sense of mix-and-matching colors, my wife st

Just starting to slice up some cork rings in Custom's checkerboard jig, and wondered how to keep my sanity glueing/holding all the pieces together. Rod Bond and a plastic cable tie? Many thanks for suggestions!

Jim,
I'm using twisted copper sold at local bait shops near the finger lakes (Watkins Glen, Ithaca, etc.) I think that they're 300yd spools, 40# test or so, for about $15. I'm on Cayuga. Pulling up a big laker by hand with copper wire (spooled up on a victrola) is a blast, although we lose a lot of bigger fish since the only "flex" is in my arm! I thought I would try to spool the c

Looking for a trolling rod that can handle twisted copper wire for lake trout fishing in the NY Finger Lakes. I currently use the wire with a victrola but lose a lot of bigger fish when fishing by hand (no "give"). I'm probably going to spool up the copper on a Penn #49 or similar reel. Thinking of a 6 - 7' blank, moderate action, with a roller tip. Thanks in advance - any sugges

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm going to try some shaping with lead sinkers for some butt weight combined with a split grip and see what happens. I just don't want to turn the rod into a tuna stick compared to original intentions. Compared with what I have now though, hopefully it can only balance better! Thanks again, Mike.

Thanks Ralph! Currently, my balance point is near the front of the foregrip and feels really awkward. Just curious, are there weights sold commercially for this purpose (balancing)?

Thanks for the suggestions Tom, I appreciate the help! My wife's grandad wanted a rod of this type for panfish. The blank without a grip feels excellent, wish I could just tape the reel on! Maybe a split grip with a bit of weight in the very butt section would work? I'll tinker a bit more and let you know what happens. I agree about the minimal weight toward the tip, I'm using the concept

Trying to put together a 7'6 spinning rod using a SCIII 2wt. fly blank, but having some difficulty balancing the rod d/t the extra length. Using a lightweight Quantum Catalyst spinning reel. Can anyone offer a suggestion from experience on what length or type of handle to try? Right now I have a St. Croix 12" handle (from kit) on it and it still seems a bit front-heavy. Thanks for any s

Great site Tom, many thanks for your hard work! This site is sure a gem for all levels of information. (and hey - I feel a bit honored to share the same 6/12 birthdate too!)
Thanks again, very much appreciated!

Thanks, I appreciate all of your replies! I'm going to try rigging up the 4wt. blank with temporary guides (#6 alconites) and give it a test run. Thanks again for your ideas and helpful info!

My wife's grandad is looking for a 8'6" spinning rod for crappie/panfish, using a ul reel with 2-4# test line. As a gift, I'm tempted to build him one using a St. Croix SCIII 8'6" 4wt. flyrod blank that I have, but would really appreciate any other blank suggestions! Many Thanks! Mike

Thanks Kevin, I appreciate your reply. Actually, I've been leaning toward the SCIII AC70MHF casting blank, but just wondered if there were any "favorites" out there. I really like the way these SCIII's look when finished so in the end I'll probably stick with this blank. Thanks again!
