The problem I found is that the heights of the guides relative to the corresponding tops are still coordinated based on the old cone of flight system. I usually end up using a top with a ring one size larger and it doesn't look so bad.

96. Tip top dilemma
I am looking for a tip with a 14 tube, but a small ring. I searched but couldn't find one. Is anyone aware of a vendor that carries one? Thanks.

Sometimes when the grip is super tight it gets compressed and shortens when pushed down. It needs to return to its original length.

Steve, I built a float rod on a spey blank last year and spoke with Greg Holloway of Hopkins & Holloway in the UK and per his directions set the stripper guide at 32 inches from the reel stem. The rod casts nicely. The stripper guide is also a 10 ring match guide. Seems small but works well with 4-6lb mono. Haven't tried it with braid yet.

I have removed a few reel seats with the dremel but if your seat is really close to the blank then that would make me nervous on a high end blank. You could use a hacksaw and cut a spiral groove around the seat. Don't cut too deep. You only need enough depth to fit a flat blade screwdriver in the slot. Insert the screwdriver and twist. Do this sequentially around the seat and the seat will split

I recently stripped an old Garcia Ambassadeur flipping rod. I used the citrus stripper. Coat the rod and let the stripper stay on a good long time (at least 2 hours, but prefereably overnight). Then use a plastc scraper, plastic putty knife, or the edge of a credit card and gently scrape the old paint off. My rod required three applications, but all the paint eventually came off. Don't forget to

101. Re: pro wrap
A few precautions when using pro wrap mettalics.
1. Never let the thread fly off the spool by anchoring the thread to the groove in the spool prior to cutting.
2. Before pulling the tag end through cut it until only about a half inch is left to pull through. Too long a tag and it will unravel. Also if you pull it under thread that is too tight you will pull the metal wrap off the threadco

I wipe the brush across the tunnel opening, and then blot the excess.

103. Donation/raffle rods
A quick question for those of you who donate rods to RFS, CFR, etc. Are there any regulatory (tax) issues to consider with rod donation?
Thanks,
John

105. cord handle
Good morning and happy holidays to all.
I am rebuilding an old 70's Garcia Ambassadeur flipping rod which was built on what looks to be a conolon blank. I am attempting my first cord rear grip (no foregrip) and am using Helmsman Spar Urethane over the cord. How much do you guys usually cover the cord? Do you usually make it smooth or do you leave texture, or is this just a matter of personal p

I recently built one for my daughter on an 8'-6" 7/8 weight that I bought from Roger on %^(*. It's great casting a float rig for panfish and it has handled bass to 3 lbs. It is slower, so the casting stroke needs to be adjusted but for a youngster with limited wrist strength it should be great.

108. epoxy on aluminum
Just curious if anyone here hasv ever epoxied over bare aluminum. I have a Lamiglas 961XH musky rod and a Shimano Cardiff waiting to be paired up. I was thinking about a polished clear coated aluminum butt grip.
Thanks.

I stop turning three times with the guides at 90, 180, and 270 deg from vertical and wick off the excess. Works fine even with micros.

Try pac bay m series. If you don't mind shipping costs, guidesnblanks.com in the UK has high frame small ring match guides. Contact Gregg Holloway of Hopkins & Holloway (e-mail address is on the website). Great customer service. I built a float rod on a 13' spey blank and I used H & H high frame match guides. The stripper is a 10mm ring and placed 32" from the reel stem at Gregg's su

Think about this: when do you ever grip the area immediately behind a spinning reel with a full hand grip? Either one or two fingers will be behind the reel stem. And when fighting a large fish with a spinning reel you would tend to grip up the rod away from the reel stem.
Finally like others said, if it feels comfortable to you, then it's correct.

If the guides are all mounted on the top of the rod, then I would place all tucks, starts and stops on the underside away from the angler's view. If the guides are mounted underneathe as in a spiral wrap or a spinning rod, I would place the tucks on the side opposite the angler's view.

114. Re: tip top heights
I am far from an expert, but is it possible that the tops and guides are sized for a cone of flight configuration. It seems that way on my store bought rods.

I built one on a 13' spey rod blank. Casts a loooong way. Anglers Roost sells them at a reasonable price. I got mine from a guy named Roger on ^&*%.

117. epoxy behind micros
Quick question - What do you guys do to get a straight line of epoxy behind a micro guide without getting finish in the guide ring (I find it extremely hard to get a brush back there)?

I have the slim Pac Bay Channel Lock in size 18 and mounted to it is an Okuma ABF 50. It has double locking rings, but they seem to not stay put as well as they should.

I set up the butt guide based upon the reel to be used (height of line coming off the reel and the line angle). I then static test for the running guides as if I would for a spinner. When the first 180 guide is between 10 and 12 inches from the butt guide, I place a bumper guide where the line crosses the blank under load (90 deg. bend). I then tweak the butt guide and the first 180 guide so the

I would send it back for the following reasons.
1. Just because you could see the cracks for a length of three inches, it doesn't conclusively prove that they don't extend further.
2. If the blank is defective, there is no way to know if there are cracks elsewhere on the blank that aren't visible.
3. The vendor has a right to examine the blank and log it in for QA/QC purposes. Any assistan
