cord handle

Good morning and happy holidays to all.

I am rebuilding an old 70's Garcia Ambassadeur flipping rod which was built on what looks to be a conolon blank. I am attempting my first cord rear grip (no foregrip) and am using Helmsman Spar Urethane over the cord. How much do you guys usually cover the cord? Do you usually make it smooth or do you leave texture, or is this just a matter of personal preference?

Thanks to all for their responses.

To make it smooth will require more Spar than you're likely to have in your can. Best to put down a couple coats and let it go. Plus, that leaves you with the cord effect, which you'll loose if you completely cover it over.

I've made a few cord grips and I usually just throw a coat or two of some kind of finish on it (spar urethane, old rod finish that's gone a little too yellow for my tastes, etc.). I just try to seal the cord and make sure it stays put on the blank. Like Tom said, I think one of the points of using the cord grip is for the texture, so you probably don't want to go and coat it so heavy that it'll totally encapsulate the cord.

Any cord I do I mix some rod bond up and spread it on the surface of whatever it goes on a thin coat then put it on

It will not come off Then you can coat it with something that will Not yellow Spar will

I've never done a cord handle. What about permagloss or lumiseal? Would these work?
