The H is what I would consider a mod fast and the m is just a little slower. You may like the h better as it is a little faster than the m.I like a more moderate action for the kind of fishing I do.I have some Batson rclb 70mls that are awful good blanks but are too stiff and fast for how I fish.Hope this helps. The ccs numbers would eliminate all this guesswork if you find one you like run the num

Casey,I have built several of the mudhole blanks for catfishing.I drift mostly with cutbait and you wont beat them for price and toughness.I like the mediums for channels and average blues and use the heavys when I put out big baits.I have caught up to 30lb blues on the mediums but would use the heavys to target larger fish.jmo You wont be sorry if you try them.I also use a simple spiral wrap on

Tom I told you wrong, the headstock is bolted to the bed casting.A few minor adjustments and got that dead center with the tailstock. The runout is still a pretty good bit(.030) or so out with the 4 jaw chuck.Roger you are right with my jacobs chuck on the #2 taper it is only .003-.005 out.I thought I was buying a quality chuck in the barracuda.Maybe Im expecting too much.I guess my next question i

This is an older sprunger lathe. The chuck is a nearly new barracuda I bought less than 6 mos and probably turned a half dozen cork grips on it.The particular mandrels are a couple Lynn made special for me 16in. long and 5/8 and3/4 dia.It does the same with whatever is in the chuck.Ive had the shaft out of the headstock to check bearings and replaced both though they didnt seem bad.The head stock

How much runout is acceptable in a wood lathe?Ive noticed my mandrels vibrating lately and checked runout this afternoon.I chucked a 1/2 in. dia center drill as close to the chuck as possible and checked with a dial indicator as close to the chuck on the surface of the bit as possible and got .035 runout. The tailstock live center point and the center drill point in the chuck are also a shade off

Am looking at Anglers Roost reels as suggested to another member. What am I looking for?For my 4wt panfish rod Im gonna build,do I want a small diameter medium arbor reel or what?I assume the larger dia. reels are for heavier wt. rods and larger fish where more line for fighting fish would be used. Also are the lines and backing at the same place what Iwant? Thanks again

Jeff the reverse flexcoat bits are the cats meow. They are sharpened on the back of the flat part of the bit where it joins the shaft. The shaft is long, you put the shaft through the grip and then into drill chuck. The shaft will stabilize it in the grip hole and you pull it through the grip while holding the grip in your hand cutting with the back side of the bit, not the point.Sponsors sell them,a

Chip I have a forecast I believe uses the same supports and the slot where the supports slide in is 2in. wide.1.990 to be exact.I use 1 amtak support in mine and I believe them to be the same as several others of that caliber wrapper.

Until now ,and thinking about Jims statement,I had never considered that you cant actually level a rod.If you level on top the bottom will be off and if you level the bottom, top will be off.I guess Toms comment,of centerline is best you can do,is in fact, the best you can do as that will split the difference in how much it is off from o to 180.Am I in left field or have I learned something?

Yes lock the wing on back of the jaws and hook the rubber band on the hook ,go around handle a couple times and hook loose end back on the chuck jaws.Use a couple or three bands.I sometimes just use masking tape to go around the jaws ,rod, and back around the chuck again.

Jess just an idea as Ive never done it ,but, you could possibly turn down or cut off the old grip, take new grip sized just snug to the blank and slit it with a razor bl;ade end to end,rod bond blank and contact cement grip, down both sides of slit, and just spread it and clamp over blank with hand.Turn seam underneath and sand a little after it drys.Might work and eva is pretty cheap if it dont.

Lynn at Backlash Tools can make any size you want. From a previous post ,if I understand correctly,Lance at Swampland Tackle,is handling all of his ordersnow. He does excellent work and the threaded TK Mandrels are the cats meow.He made a very wise choice imo as to Lance taking care of his orders also.

That was my thoughts too.I figured taking 6in. off would ruin that nice soft tip.May be wrong.I may be reading it wrong but I dont think he said what he intended to.

What kind of procedure yall use to get the finish straight and smooth on the ends of guide wraps.Especially on the ring side of a sf guide.I always make a mess right where the ring joins the blank.Either a blob runs out on the blank from the eye and makes the edge too wide and ragged or I get it in the guide.Any advice how to keep them smooth and level much appreciated.

So,if I start with my rod horizontal ,and tie to a movable weight on the floor, and flex to 90deg. to the butt, with a little bend in the lower 1/3,tie it off and place my guides where they need to be,I could then untie and move my rod up to 45deg. or whatever, scoot my weight out ,retie to my weight and put more or less 90 deg bend to the butt, with a little bend in the lower 1/3 and readjust my gui

Jim how,if you have your rod at 45deg. do you know when your 90deg. to the butt with the tip?Do you just look at it and when its close and some bend in the lower third call it good or do you measure some way?If I have it horizontal,I can tell if its pointing straight down.Probably a dumb question but I dont know is why Im asking. Thanks

Thats exactly what Ive been doing.Tying off the tip to a solid eye with the rod holder angled about 30 deg. with line from reel with small weight attached through the guides.I had never considered the importance of the rod being supported horizontal and the load straight down. What I was doing was putting the rod in an unnatural bend and not realizing it.Thanks guys, sometimes what is old hat to ya

Tom its 7 ft and I want to make it 8 ft.Could buy a better quality tube I suppose, but if I do that could probably just get an 8 ft. blank and not have to worry.Youre right about the tube creasing and folding up.That was my concern, and that possibility of a Big fish is very real where I fish.Id hate to lose a once in a lifetime fish because I was too cheap to buy a $50 blank. You talked me ouy of i
