Josh thats one good thing about doing it just as a hobby, like you and I do.it dont matter how long it takes. If it takes me 2 hrs or 2 minutes the end result is the same.Ive been doing something I enjoy doing, where if I did it for a living I would have to hurry up.Ive only built and rebuilt 8 or 10 rods, and some have took a week and some a month. The more you do the faster and more confident you w

Billy I did cut it off last night. The red was so dark I never would have liked it even if I had got it finished.I just chalk it up to experience and move on.Im just doing it for fun and thread and cp are the cheapest part of a rod and my time aint worth much either.lol I learned quite a bit about wrapping even though it didnt turn out.I layed out another 1 this afternoon and didnt even have to lo

Mike I called myself packing tight but I may not be tight enough.I packed after every4or5 threads trying very hard to keep my seams straight so I thought I did plenty.I dont understand why the finish would completly leave the pattern though. It was like the spider and red diamond surrounding it were completly dry like no finish had ever been put on that spot. Not just a few fisheyes but 0 finish o

Ive been practicing on some butt wraps on scrap blanks and pvc and decided I would do one on One of my personal rods.Spent a lot of time and thought maybe it wasnt something to write home about but was decent enough for my first one.Put cp on and it went about 3 shades darker and afetr 24hrs was still that same shade of dull red about like it is when you first put it on before it dries. The spide

12in. grip tapers from .725-.790.Will 3/4 with rod bond be tight enough on the smallend? If not will 5/8 stretch enough for the big end or do I need to drill 5/8 to about 11/16?

Josh if you dont want to make it with rings to length buy 2 half or so of the length you want and glue together. It dont have to be extended with cork if you dont want to.You can make it longer with whatever material you want just be sure and use glue that will bond to both surfaces.I have a catfish rod with a 14 in.rear grip with the rear 6in. wrapped with cord back to the butt cap.Ilike it.Thats

Danny it probably wont look like the epoxy your familiar with. Its a real thick paste.Thats why it is in the jars and not tubes.Just get about equal amounts and mix it up.Not near as critical mixing as finish epoxy.

Mitch the RCLB blanks Jay mentioned are excellent catfish blanks.I have 3 I use myself as a suggestion from Jay.Mine are all M I believe. The Mudhole Value E Glass blanks are also excellent.IMO.They are advertised as fast but tend be more moderate in action in actual fishing.Again just my opinion. The spswb7m should work about perfect.

If you dont want to cut the handle off you could replace a couple rings where its soft using the method I believe Bill Boettcher described. It is posted somewhere I believe .Use the search at the top of page.

Mo Iam a new builder and really struggled with the drilling and reaming process.I now use a flex coat bit ,thanks to a previous post by Mike Barkley.I clamp a block of wood to the drill press table and bore a hole in it same size as bit Im using .Leave it clamped on table and put ring over the hole and carefully hold it and start drilling slowly and then drill all way through with no tear out.I r

Roger another option to stiffen it if that 2x is not going to hang down too far on the front edge take a piece of 1/2 or 3/4 plywood ripped same width as 1x4 and sandwiched between.Use wood glue on both sides of plywood and nail or screw together between 1x4.The nongrained plywood and glue combo make a heck of a strong beam when sandwiched between 2 boards on outside.

What determines a guides strength or weakness?Where will it fail in fish fighting ability not physical abuse? Will they pull off the rod, bend the foot, deform ring or what?I know most use double foot guides for heavier rods but why?If I use say BLAG guides "running" on a spiral wrap heavier rod what will happen to them? Thanks Im just old and dumb.

Thanks everyone for the replies.Looks like I need some reamers and drill bits.Thats one thing I really like about this theres no set procedure for a lot of things but a lot of ways to end up with same "hopefully" results.
