181. Sulky Question?
Hello Again,
Well, went by Hobby Lobby on my lunch hour to pickup a thread guage and when I was leaving, I noticed a whole rack of Sulky thread, Metalics to Rayon.
I know I've seen posts concerning the Sulky thread. What I want to know is, and I assume the metalics are alright for rod buliding, but what about the others?
Thanks in Advance
Doug

183. Thread buying?
I thought once that I seen a post about someone buying
thread from a fabric shop or something of that nature.
I was wondering if this approach worked when finish was applied
over it? Also does anyone know if the thread has to be nylon or
can it be some other kind of synthetic.
Thanks Brian P.-KY.

I've searched the site on this and found lots of posts but nearly all having to do w/ Sulky with CP.
I'm building a fly rod on a dark blue Forecast blank. Anyone know what I can expect if I use Sulky nylon or rayon with just epoxy, no CP?
Thanks,
Bryon Anderson

185. Managing Color
Well i spent the weekend messing with my new Madiera thread and various color preservers. I have realized that anything I add to thread will change the color properties from the original spool color. I have been messing with various CP's and found that the guedbrod, and flexcoat will change the color even slightly. Other things i have seen is that Flexcoat adds a "coating" that chang

Hi Guys (and gals if any out there)
HMM it seems to me that the CP topic is one that never goes away.
Tom did a formal test of Commercialy available CPs and shared the info and it seems that most problems were related to improper packing of thread.
Now many folks are looking for cps that are available localy or are looking for a cp to do a certain thing (like varathnane use to)
so heres what

As in everything but.
I have be experimenting with a variety of stuff that I had laying around the house.
Future Acrylic floor polish works as a color preserver. It has a very low bui;d however and tends to be a bit drippy if over applied. Best results came when using 2 light coats of slightly diluted Flex Coat Color Preserver, letting each dry for 12 hours before the next application. The F

Well, it's my turn to be laughed at. I'm working on a fly rod for a friend of mine and I had it done beautifully. The sulky dark teal thread was looking wonderful with the blue rings on the guides, especially after the first coat of CP went on. Then came the finish. Did you notice I didn't mention my second or third coats of CP? Yep, that's right. I was so happy with how it looked, I forgot put o

This might be a bit of a dumb question but I am about to start wrapping a fly rod using the blue ringed TiCh Forecast guides(both as stripper and running guides) and can't make up my mind on what shade of blue to use.
I've decided to use Gudebrod regular nylon in Royal Blue(245?) as it seems to be a good match on the spool, but after doing 2 test wraps(using a old snake guide though),one side wit

When using thread from a sewing company make sure it is not lubricated!! Some manufacture use wax or a silicone for a lubricant when used in a sewing machine. I have found some great thread at sewing stores, just make sure there is lubricant used on the threads

I'm about to start wrapping my first graphite fly rod and was wondering about the use of nylon versus rayon or any combination of materials in the thread. Is there reason one or another should or should not be used?

Hello from South Eastern NC. Flounder fishing is the best right now that I have seen in quite a while. Not great numbers but larger than normal fish. Awhile back I thought I read that one could use Futura floor wax (liquid of cource) for color preserver on thread wraps. I've searched the past posts and could not find the article. Am I just imagining (as my wife says) or has anyone used this produ

I only found 2 matches when I searched this topic, and the only reason I wanted to start a new threa is because this sewing thread is made of Rayon. Have any of you used Rayon for wrapping guides? I really want to wrap my guides with this because it is called "Italian pride" and it is the colors of the italian flag, and Im Italian. Let me tell you what it says on the spool : Rayon decor

197. Impossible Pinks
I began making my own rods just a few years ago. I've been trying to get some pink trim wraps, salmon egg pink for salmon rods, and find that no matter CP or not, the lightest pink always shift at least two tints and come out red. Interested in anyone who has experience getting a soft pink to stay pink after finishing.
As an aside, I have a nice soft mint thread that maintains true tint no matte

I don't usually use CP on my cane rods but a customer wants hunter green wraps with black tipping so I have been experimenting with color results. I tried Flex Coat CP, Gudebrod #811 and Verathane. I am using 00 silk and have applied multiple coats of each CP then dipped the wraps in Man-O-War Spar varnish. The Flex Coat CP seems like it is the only one giving me a consistent final color. But the

I recently purchased several spools of Sulky Metalic Thread at the recomendation of this board. I was wondering if you wrap it flat or twist it prior to wrapping? I plan to use it in small amounts as inlays on guide wraps etc. Thanks in advance.

203. Sulky Threads
After hearing all of the glowing reviews, I picked up some Sulky Metallics and they are awesome. Has anyone tried their non-metallic thread (Rayon)?? The color variety is fantastic! Everything from bright orange to many multi-color threads. Anyone have any experience with rayon thread. If the CP will lock the color and they are strong enough, they would really add some outstanding colors t

I asked a question regarding Cp's a few days ago and the responses got me to thinking. SO while i was out at Joanns fabric and Gander Mountain I found what i thought would be interesting substitutes for the standard CP i have been buying. Here is what I got and tested and the results
1) Dritz Fray Check: Worked just like cp. Needed many coats on rayon thread to get desired results. I will

205. Rayon Thread
I have been experimenting with Rayon thread from coats and Clarke. Anyone have any long term issues using Rayon? I have found it to be thinner in diameter to size A thread. It certainly soaks up epoxy so I am using more and more CP. The upside is the interesting patterns and colors you can get from this thread and it seems pretty easy to wrap with. I am just concerned about strength.

206. Cord, EVA or Hypalon
I have noticed quite a bit of conversation recently about handles that need to be tough and durable. There is a third alternative to EVA and Hypalon and that is nylon cord grips. Years ago cord grips were very common here in the Northwest on glass rods in applications where the grip needed to be very tough and recently there has been some resurgence of their use.

208. Rayon thread?
I found some 'Coats & Clark' decorative 'Rayon' thread at a local yardage store.
Stuff sure was pretty. Real bright, shiny colors. I wondered how it would work as a rod wrapping thread.
I tried some test wraps, and they looked/finished fine. I did notice that this thread is not as strong as the regular nylon thread, but I don't think it will be an issue on a light fly rod. Still:

I would imagine I'm the only goon to ever ask this one but can you use fly tying thread with CP on guide wraps? I'm having trouble finding the exact shade of green in Gudebrod but a spool of my olive dun fly thread is looking pretty good to me right now.

All,
I've used Rayon thread occasionally due to the wide range of bright colors available. I've noticed that rayon accepts CP much differently than nylon and I've had to use 3-4 coats of CP to keep the finish from leaking into the wrap.
Anyone else have this issue or have used rayon in wrapping? The sewing stores have a very wide array of rayon colors available for creating unique patterns.
