241. Testors Model Paint
Has anyone used testors model paint to paint a rod? I tried it on an extra blank that had a bunch of scratches and so far it looks pretty good.

I recently had a warranty blank that was replaced, when I got the new blank it was just HORRIBLE. I am not going to mention names of manufactures here, but I have heard from another builder that agreed the quality (straightness being the big complaint) of the blanks from a couple of manufactures?
Is anyone else seeing this trend? Is it the decisions of many companies to move manufacturing

Is the Donjer Flocking Adhesive designed for application to sealed wood application? I am wondering if it will stay on "graphite" reel seats and blank surfaces. I really do not want to play with potential failure on a custom rod for a customer without some good information. Is any priming or surface prep needed. I am thinking about doing some split grips with different colors of flo

244. White Underwraps
First, this forum has been a wealth of information to me. Thanks to all the posters!!!! I have been building rods for along time now, (fly rods) but recently expanded out to building everything under the sun. I have always been a fan of dark colors on wraps, had a problem with my first light colored wrap which was resolved on this forum. I am building two saltwater rods that require a WHITE UNDER

245. Painted two rods...
Have read the posts about painting rod blanks. My question is now I have painted two: one with Krylon Fusion and one with Duplicolor Metallic. I top coated with the Duplicolor clear and have let dry for several days. Paint jobs came out fair for being first try.
What now? I tried a test scrap with Permaglos, but the Permaglos ate into the paint. Do I leave as is? Is that fine?
Thanks,
Phil

246. Blank Finish
I have finally looked at most of the stuff that I bought in Charlotte. I ended up with six blanks from Andy Dear and two from Lamiglas that I need some advice on. These "nautual grey popping rod" blanks are not coated with any finish and it appears that they are well sanded down to a very nice surface appearance. The ones from Andy contain a label that says "No Finish Applied Na

I was ready to go....Really......The blank was masked and prepped, the paint was properly agitated (genuinely angry really) and then it hit me. I was about to use $6.25/ounce auto body paint on a rod blank that I recovered from a junk yard and planned to give away.....I MUST BE NUTS....Putter's offer of the tree stand psychoanalysis is looking better and better. 249. Painting advice
I have a raw fiberglass blank and would like to paint it glossy black. Should I prime it first? What is the best type of primer/paint to use? I have an airbrush, so that is an option. Does it matter if the paint is matte or glossy, since it will be clearcoated eventually? Do I need to clearcoat the paint before whipping? If so, can I use my airbrush for that too?
Thanks.

251. painting a blank
I'm resigned to go to an auto body paint shop to have my blank painted.(more professional)
Do i need to supply my own paint (plasti-kote-whatever) or let them use what they use for the cars?
Please help!
I read Ken P's web directions for DO it Yourself (pigmented epoxy applied with fingers etc.) and I'm sure I'd rather have the blank sprayed.
I was told I could do it myself with Plast-kote-

Dear friends,
I've beeing watching some videos and I've seen people marking the blans with permanent markers, to locate wraps. These markers are not "permanent" when using alcohol. How are these marks cleaned after wraping?. I think there is a risk of "painting" threads.

253. Refinishing/Paint
I have refinished a few rods before including painting the blanks. In doing this I have found Permagloss doesn't like certain paint formulations. Spar urethane has been my way around this delimma, but I feel I would get better and longer lasting protection with Permagloss. What brands or types of can spray paint is compatable with Permagloss? I know some of you take blanks to auto paint shops

254. Painting rod blank?
Hi everyone...
I am new to this hobby. I have never ever built a rod at all. It seems very fun. I just had a couple questions right now.
I recently bought one Cascade RX7 7'10 1pc. 12-20wt. Bass Blank Clear. It is a dark grey - black color. I was wondering if it can be painted to
be another color...i.e. just like the Shimano Teramar rods, the rod color is cool and I am sure the bla

I was wondering if anyone knows where I could get a blank "painted". Some time back I found a builder (in virginia I think) who would process a blank and return it to you in basically any color that you could want, but have lost his contact information.
I have found very little information about this topic and would welcome any input that ya'll might have.

257. Who makes that blank
In reading the last post I am amazed that anyone would even ask that question, I know Bill will tell you that it is none of your business.
That is like asking me who builds my reels, Do you really think a manufacturer is going to tell you who or where their product is built.
Think about it.
The most important thing is not who or where it is built, It is the company that will stand be

258. Darn it!
I just cracked open the new MudHole catalog and American Tackle has done it again with a new guide. This time solid titanium frame and another new composition ring to go with it. I've been redoing my entire workshop (overdue). I've been drywalling, painting, installing new cabinets and counter tops. I planned out about how much shelf room I'd need for guides. I separate them by style and

I just bought two cheap "sanded blanks". I have only made a few rods and am still practicing "on the cheap" until I develop my skills. Question is: Do I use rod restorer to give these blanks some gloss? Any other product ? Thank you in advance.
Kindest regards,

261. Custom Components
I am fairly new to rod building and have been asked to build a rod with a Nebraska Cornhuskers theme, so anything red and white of course. the rod will be 6' to 7' UL slow action. So any red or white blanks, handles, reel seats, guides, or custom made decals will be of great help. Thanks Jeff PS: has any one tried painting or powder coating guides or reel seats.

I did a search and found many questioning painting a blank with Imron by DuPont. Has anybody actually painted with it and how has it worked for you. Reason I ask is I work for a Peterbilt dealership and our body shop seems to have many left over cans of paint that I am sure I could get samples from them. Also, If you have used it how are you applying it to the blank. Are you using airbrush or HVL

I am new to all of this and decided to start out on a "practice" rod. I purchased an unsanded graphite blank from the MudHole and spent a couple of hours sanding down the ridges with progressively finer paper. I was please to end up with silky smooth blank with a matte finish. At first this looked "G-loomis" like and I thought this was going to be great.

I am looking for a camouflage rod blank. I have a 13 year old nephew who wants his first fly rod to be camo. I have performed a search on the website and found back in 2002 a reference to Diamondback having a rod. Does anyone know where I can find a fly blank in camo?

Are there any real advantages, other than cosmetics, of totally covering the tuna rod with finish, as opposed to covering only the wraps ? Most of the rods that I see are 100% "epoxied", I have wondered why.
Thank you

Hi,
Could someone let me know if Trondak U-40 permagloss can be applied to a blank before the whipping of the wraps on the guide feet and the application of the epoxy? I was just wondering if the Epoxy wrap finish will get the bond it requires to the blank if a coating of permagloss was on there.
Thanks in advance

I am going to mix testors with LS Supreme in order to pait a cheap beat up blank that a friend of mine wants to use. I was wondering how you guys would go about mixing this (any additives?) and how you would apply it? I would imgine that it would need more than one coat since the area touching the rollers would need to be dry while turning. Any other suggestions would be great, thanks.

I bought a couple unsanded blanks that still have the little ridges. I want to coat the entire blank with epoxy to smooth it out and give it a glossy look. I ordered some LS Supreme and grips and guides to compete the rods. Should I do anything to prep the blanks before coating them with the LS Supreme? Should I sand them a little with a Scotchbrite pad? Clean them with alchohol? Is the LS Surpre
