Hi:I looked in the library but no mention of this. When locating the spine on a 4 piece fly rod do you spine each piece individually? Seems like this would be necessary except for the butt piece maybe...

I have made a few so far from fiberglass(it,s cheaper than messing up a graphite rod lol.) but the ferrules stiffen up the rod too much..i wonder how short i can go with the ferrule to get a less stiffer rod and not damage the ferrule when loaded..i know the ferrules near the butt will be the longest because of a greater load and shorter near the tip end..i just don,t have a feel for how long or

I've read somewhere to place the stripper guide 32" or so from the fly rod reel seat. I'm building a 4 pc 5wt for son and this measurement means no guide on the first piece, only the reel seat will be here. I don't even know what question to ask, I've learned so much here. Is it common to not have a guide on the first piece of a 4 pc fly rod?

I have an old 9'5#, where the bottom male section broke many years ago. A local rod builder tried to fix this by inserting an internal ferrule, but without success. There was still a crack in the blank. I have cut the blank two inches, planning to get a better internal ferrule. I wonder: - Where to find supplies for such ferrules - What should the internal length be (the unsuccessful was onl

Hi, I'm working on a build for myself using a Black Hole Suzuki Special 10' blank and KR Concept layout using Pac Bay Minima high Frame guides.....I believe the reduction train is a 20 12 6H and 6 runners. I have 2 issues, 1 I think the last reduction guide isn't quite right....I can't get the bullseye with out some pretty ridiculous spacing between the second and third guide...maybe it is just

Time to lighten things up during these times. We have all had a major blunder while learning our craft. While in the moment i'm sure we all wanted to break the blank over our knee or send the spool of thread across the room like a 90mph fast ball, but looking back I'm sure we all laughed it off once things got back to going smoothly . I'll start it off. Many moons ago when I started building rod

Perhaps this subject has been dissected ad infinitum but..... please humor me. I have built fly rods but not in a few years and I would classify my ability as mediocre at best. I am building a 3 wt 10 ft nymph rod as a Covid stay at home project, I have a neighbor who has been building rods for 50 years and is very, very good, he helps me whenever I need it, which is often. He is an advocate o

I've just bought my first bamboo blank, a Payne 98, 7', 4/5 wt. Any tips on building this rod would be appreciated. Since this is a new blank, does it still need decorative wraps as old bamboo rods all had? What is best guide spacing/ sizes for this rod? And is linseed oil a good finish for this rod? And is Flexcoat Light ok for finish for all guide wraps?

Hi just like the title says where should I put a ferrule on a one piece blanks? Do you put right in front of the stripper guide so not to put a stiff area in the middle of the blank. Thx Pat

I’m building a rod on a older Lamiglas graphite rod blank, an 8’ 6” 6/7 2 piece rod. It has a graphite butt over tip ferrule, should I do a thread wrap over the whole ferrule? Most of the rods I’ve done are all tip over butt, how common was the use of a butt over tip ferrule?

As the title says, I am building a 2 piece fly rod and of course one of the guides is very close to the ferrule. I am going to incorporate the guide wrap and ferrule wrap into one wrap but have a question. Typically you start a guide wrap from off the guide and work towards the center. On a ferrule wrap you start on the outside and work towards the ferrule. Here is my dilemma. Do I use one wrap s

I’ve read a few posts on here recently about installing rod tips and they all talked about using the hot melt glue. I almost always install my tips using the 5 minute Rod Bond. I was just wondering does everyone else use the hot melt glue? I’ve been building rods for about 38 years. When I first started I used the hot melt glue, then I read an article I think it was in Rodcrafters magazine, about

I am building an NFC 1167-2 H power F action surf rod 11' 6" . Purpose is to cast swim bait type lures in the 3-5 oz range. Planned reel is a Penn Slammer III 4500 (spool diameter 55mm). 20-40lb braid range, most likely 30lb. Reel seat is set at 26" from butt to mounted reel stem. I have used the spool dia. x 27 to locate the choke guide at 1485mm from spool face. From other sour

I am new to the rod building obsession and have a question for those who are more experienced than me. Would it possible to use the regular ol' "dime store" glue stick to temporarily put the small guides in place until they can be wrapped or at least long enough to allow me to tape them down with masking tape? I will purchase some guide adhesive but will not be able to receive the adh

I knew I read somewhere before but I couldn't find it in the search. Tom had mentioned that he usually puts the stripping guide at 32". I wasn't sure where that distance. From the end of the butt, or the end of the reel seat? This will be my first fly build so don't want to screw it up before I get started.

I have always been told that you do not place a guide right on the Ferrell. I have noticed on other forums that some build with single foot guides, and the guide is right on the Ferrell with ring of the guide actually extending past the female end of the Ferrell. I am now wondering if what I have been doing is wrong? I always move the guides off the Ferrell, and make adjustments in the rest of

So I'm back with more questions. This time I'm doing the layout of a 3 piece spinning rod. The issue I'm having is the 3rd guide from the butt falls right on the ferrule. If I move it up to the tip one inch the foot falls about 1/8" from the ferrule female side. First photo is the original and adjusted guide placement: Second photo is where the guide would be placed if moved to ad

Ok lets open a can worms that probable was been opened a thousand times. I am getting a supply order together. Once again I am scratching my head over which finish to order. I know technique is more important than the finish. My technique is lacking or at the very least rusty. Took a very long break from rodbuilding.. Was building a couple dozen or so a year. Now maybe three or four a year.

I just finished building a multi-piece rod with tip over butt ferrules. I am pretty pleased with the outcome but I have one issue that I need to address. One of the female ferrules touches the guide wrap epoxy on the adjoining male ferrule. I am concerned that possibly over time or maybe right away when I really tighten the two pieces together, that the epoxy will get damaged cosmetically (thi

I am going to build a 9' travel surf rod on a RodGeeks blank SRF90MMF4 which is a 4pc blank rated for 8-20lb mono and 1/2 to 2 1/2 oz lures. I plan to use a Saltist 4500 spinning reel loaded with 30lb to 40 lb braid targeting Roosters, Jack Crevalle, snappers, etc., casting lures. Given the braid size I am building this rod with a New Guide Concept layout using Fuji KW double foot guides. Us

Spigot ferrule blanks seem to have been eclipsed by tip-over ferrules. Is this the result of performance, durability, cosmetics, ease of production (cost), or some other factor?

Hi guys, This is my first post, but first I want to say that this is an awesome forum with so much to be gained from reading the posts. However I cannot find opinions on my "dilemma". I'm building a 2 piece 1-2kg 7 foot CTS blank, using Fuji's KR concept. My question, should I be trying to place a guide foot on the blank's ferrule (well it's not actually a ferrule, rather the bott

I'm working on a build of a four piece, 13' centerpin rod on a Batson Rainshadow 1563-4 blank. I'm using Pro Wrap nylon size A for the guide and decorative butt wraps. I have some Pro Wrap tiger which would go well with the color scheme of this build and I'm thinking of using it for the three ferrule wraps. While the Pro Wrap tiger is listed as an "A" size", it is noticeable th

Hello all. I’m new here. I came looking for advise on how to modify a rod handed down to me by my grandfather. It’s a Wright & McGill “Sweetheart” 6’ casting rod. It is two piece, the rod section and the reel seat/handle section. The handle section is the “drop” type and its not comfortable to cast or fish with. The butt end of the rod section has a ferrule that mates to the handl

Thats fights you every darn step of the way. This last one I built has been a pain from the word go. Took forever to get certain components. Then layout was a pain. Never got things quite right. Everything seemed to be a compromise. Wrapping was a nightmare. Broken thread tieoff loops breaking. Finishing was just downright ugly. Used a finish I have used in the past. This batch behaved totally di

Hi all, does anyone have experience with the NFC fly rod blanks? I'm looking to build out a pair of bonefish/flats rods in 8 or 9 wt. I can't see any information on the differences between the Classic and the Gamma BetaLMX. Does anyone know if the "Classic" is like the Loomis IMX or GLX from back in the day? Many thanks, DDM

As the subject states.... Can anyone sell me on using these? Ive never built a rod with them.. Ive gone to a store and held a rod with them, i personally prefer cork... If anything, it seems other mediums allow for a significant advantage on customizability.. It seems with winn grips, it is what it is.. And im not a fan of hkw they litter thier logo all over the place.. Can you shape winn? What m
