Getting ready to wrap. My guide placement puts a guide close to the ferrule. If I wrap my ferrule as I have in the past then wrap the guide I will have only about a half inch gap between the two. Cannot deice if I should wrap it all as one or leave the gap. If I wrap as one I will have a little over two inches. Other than my visual preference any concern of having that much wrap over the ferrule

for a Klondike bar? Sorry .... I know why that popped into my head. I just don't know why I decided to type it out. Anyhow .... I ordered a blank not all that long ago, and when it got to my house it was damaged. Damaged as in, broken almost perfectly in half. I've since filed and had a claim with USPS settled, and now that I don't have to save the blank in case USPS wanted to look at it, I c

Hey all, I'm curious about this because I have a friend who received a mass-produced rod from Penn with a busted rod tip guide (not the rod itself but the guide is bent and just needs to be replaced). Initially I thought you could take a razor to score the epoxy and remove any thread, then take a lighter to it and twist the tip right off. He sent me this video though, which warns against doing

Hello everyone, I posted here a while ago about guides for my first build, an Epic 370 FastGlass. I decided to go with REC Recoil Single Foot Guides and I'm using a Fuji Torzite Single Foot 10 as the stripper. My friend who's helping me recommends using underwraps, but so far, just about everything I've read, has said not to. What do you guys think? He said he has a spool of black 0 gauge thr

Hi could anyone give me some guidance on doing a tri colour trim band on a ferrule? I’m trying to replicate what I see on my Sage rods but I just can’t get it. Seems to me starting from the ferrule end they have aabout 5 wraps of standard thread, 5 wraps of metallic, 5 black, 5 metallic then back to the standard wrap color for the wrapping of the guide foot. My guide is on a ferrule if that helps

I''m rebuilding an old St. Croix 11 foor surf rod for a friend. The rod has an old but effective metal ferrule. In all my tape up casting tests, it works best when the 40mm guide is mounted on the ferrule. Is there any reason I can't mount the base guide on the ferrule?

Acquired over 10 years ago an aging Granger Champion, 9" 3 piece, 2 tips, which is now 70+ years old. The rod casts a 4 wt DT like a dream come true. Unfortunately the CP and wrap varnish are failing, the grip diameter is skinny for large hands, and the cork quality is only just OK (typical for a Champion. Other than the wrap failures, the blank, blank finish, reel seat, and ferrules are

Hello, I bought a discontinued Sage Method 1090-4 rod blank (10 wt. 9 feet) and the recommended guide setup from Sage is like this: 20J / 12J / 5 / 4 / 3 / 3 / 3 / 3 / 3. I bought some REC recoil RSNX double foot snakes as recommended by Sage, but I also added some extra, just in case. It would be ok to alter the guides setup with slightly larger RSNX like in this setup: 20J / 12J / 6 / 5

Laying out a 3 and 4 piece rods and according to the charts I have guides that land just past the joint so I have to move the guide. Both rods are 9' so would I add a guide or two over the length of the rod. I understand that the guides get further apart from the tip top.

I am building a 9ft 4pc 11wt rod. on the tip section the spacing is a follows. 4", 8 5/8, 14", 20" and 26 7/8. the last guide lands right next where the ferrule wrap will end. and I mean right next to it. Do I do it all one wrap or do I leave a very very small gap? What do you do if a guide lands mid way through a ferrule? Thanks for all your help!!

Howdy all, amateur rod builder here. I've mostly done fly rods but am building some spinning rods for friends and got a few microwave nanolite guide sets. The blanks are 7ft and my question is that with the grips I made the first running guide ends up really close to the end of the make part of the first ferrule. I measured from the lip of the spool of the reel. Is it better to maybe that fir

Well, it's getting to the point that I want to upgrade my hand-wrapper to something with more horsepower. As I live in NZ I will be needing to purchase something from the US and have it shipped across - so I dont have the luxury of going into a shop to look at them or discuss. So, any tips on what I should be looking for? Or any recommendations for a good reliable model?? Cheers!

Please forgive me if this topic is discussed, dead, and buried, I searched this site here and using Google and still did not get an answer. Do we still need to wrap female ferrules on fly rods these days? Seems like the manufacturers would've solved that by now. I'm asking in general, and specifically I'm building an MHX 5 weight at the moment, which is why I put Mudhole in the title. Also, M

Greetings all, I am working on a 14’ 3pc surf casting rod and I noticed a fit issue between my tip and middle sections. The two sections seat well and with good depth, but when I wiggle the rod I can feel a slight vibration in the joint. I suspect that there is a slight mismatch in the tapers. I plan the do some light sanding, and twisting the sections together to try to wear the joint in,

Hello everybody , i wanted to get some opinions on which way to go in the dilemma i'm facing , i am used to using LC guides but went with KW's this time . The blank is a CTS 12 foot S-8 surf rod and i chose to go with a KW 30 - 25- 20- 12 ( All double foot) to one ( Single foot ) KT 10 and then KT 8's on out. Using the 27 X method and table edge alignment the choker lands at 80 inches . No

Hello Fellow rod builders. I will be building my second pin rod this winter. The blank is a CTS Affinity 13' 6" 3 piece 4-8# . My handle will be 20 inches with reel approx. 2 inches forward of center of handle. I believe I will need 14 guides plus tip top. I would love some recommendations for guide spacing. I will start with a 20 and end with 7s or 8s. Thanks

Hi guys, I'm in the midst of building a 13' - 3 piece float rod MHX blank. Never built on this specific blank before. I obviously found the spines and have the rod set up for a static test. After pulling to tip guide with some downward pressure I've noticed that where the top piece and middle piece connect, the natural bend in the rod straightens out quit a bit... probably 10". It loo

I build giant tuna rods using aftco ferrules and short bent butts. None of my rods have ever broke but recently heard of several that broke at the ferrule. I was asked how this could have happened? My first response was either builder error or faulty blank. I have been giving it more thought and now I think that it is most likely builder error. I now think that the metal ferrule creates a s

I have inherited an old, full length, Fenwick SP847 rod blank that was built up as a surf rod, using a metal ferrule that fit into a hardwood handle and reel seat that was not included. I decided to try and salvage the rod blank and build a saltwater casting rod using a Penn Squidder and 20lb. mono. I, very carefully, removed the windings and line guides as not to nick the blank. This left onl

I have been reading some articles about the pros and cons of wrapping guides at each joint of a fishing rod. Most say it's not a good idea. Is it the stress the guide puts on the joint. I've been putting guides there simply because it looks better than wrapping some thread at the joint and then moving an inch or so then wrapping the guide on. It just seems extra thread in a small area. Also

I posted a question a few weeks ago concerning surf rod blanks for a first timer, and after much consideration, have settled on a 11', MH blank (St. Croix 3SRS110MHF2 ). This is going to be a spinning rod (the reel I'll be using is an Okuma ABF-65). Reel seat and handle materials are pretty standard, and after much research, I'm thinking the center of my reel seat is going to be around 28"

Hey guys a couple questions on rod repair. I have a fly rod I'm trying to repair, it is broken about 8 inches from the top just a little bit below the bottom of the wrap for the lower guide foot. I'm trying to follow the rod repair article in the library. 1) I stopped by a thrift store and found the only old rod they had to bought it to use in the repair. Once I cut open the top part, it appea

I was laying out the guide spacing according to a chart from the internet, actually several just to see what the differences were between them and most of them were close to the same distances. I have 3 9' blanks, a 4 6 and 8 wgt. There some minor differences but each blank had at least one guide that was close to a joint. My question is, are there any potential problems putting a guide at ea

Hey y'all, I have a guy asking me to fix a snapped rod. Story is his buddy stepped on it and broke it between the first and 2nd guide. Seems like the thing to do is put a ferrule on it and make it a two piece. But I've never attached any ferrules or anything to a rod, so I'm not sure what the best way to attach one is. What do y'all use and what orientation would be best to put it on?

Silly me thought crisis management was behind me post retirement, but it seems only the venue has changed. Very shortly after applying the first coat of epoxy finish the issue de jour raised it's ugly, immediately time critical head and I was off to deal with it. You know what happened. Though the guide wraps' finish were perfect, the ferrule wraps, which included grape vine thread work, had t

I am confused. Attempting to re- build a (admittedly short) 9ft 4in surf spinning rod from a 1950’s FG Conolon, I am perplexed with the status quoi guide spacing typically and presently used with surf rods compared with most any other rods. It seems 2 or 3 fewer guides as per what I have learned about typical static testing for my 9ft rod would be the norm for this surf rod. Is a surf rod all

I have a rodgeeks 908-4 blank on hand, and the the rodgeek/st croix spacing charts show the guides being placed below the ferrule intersection, on the male ferrule, on both the first and section intersection from the tip. However, if you look at st croixs rods, they (and most other manufacturers) place their guide on the end of the female ferrule, where your ferrule wrap would be. Was just wo

90. KR Help
Hi, Recently I got the parts together to build a casting rod for a friend of mine and I am having some issues with setting up the KR concept guides. I have the MHX MB873 rod with size 10 and 5.5 strippers, 3 size 5 belly guides, and 5 size 5 runners. My issue is while doing the static tests I: 1) always have line touching 2) am not sure if I have enough guides 3) cannot keep the guide feet
