121. Re: Designing Decals
The one problem I see with printing your own decals is the ink of jet ink printers...assuming that is what most people have, at least for color. This ink tends to fade over the years. I think the problem is the ink's interaction with the air. I do not know how it would respond if it is sealed under some protective coat of epoxy; but it will be exposed to sunlight, which is probably not a good

122. FSU logo
I would like to find a place where I can get an FSU logo for the upper part of a butt wrap. Mud Hole has one that has an image of the indian head, but I was looking for one with the letters FSU. Any help here will be appreicated.

I like these suggestions. How do I pursue the decal idea further? Is there someone who can make these decals or are they simply available somewhere. I would not be surprised if the FSU logo were not available as a decal somewhere. Go Nolles!!!

I forgot to mention that she wants graphite...I imagine because of its light weight.

A friend wants me to build her a rod for her grandson that he would be proud to own. That is a tough one, as it introduces a psychological element into the mix. She wants a 7'6" fast action rod for snook, trout and red fish. This is primarily a saltwater choice, inshore or rather backcountry, but also for bass on occasion. Her granson just graduated from FSU, so she wants the colors to b

I just completed a baitcasting rod with 10mm and 8mm guides towards the tip. I found it difficult the get epoxy underneath the feet on such small guides without putting epoxy throughout that space. So I epoxied all the guides that way to be consistent and to be sure to seal up that space as well as possible. But then I got to thinking that for some reason I had not thought of, this might not h

What is the best practice when epoxing a two footed guide wrap? Do you let the epoxy go between the feet onto the rod or not?

Thanks Mike, That was pretty neat. I will definitely be able to use that. However, it probably would not work for making two or three wraps around the rod. Right?

Bill, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I cannot visualize this. Are there any visuals somewhere. I would like to experiment with this.

I am having some difficulty with doing an accent wrap using metallic silver. What I have been doing is setting up the accent wrap at the get-go. I lay the silver out and tape it to the rod. I then lay out the pull through loop and tape it to the rod. I then start the guide wrap and complete it. I return to to the accent silver and undo the tape and make three turns around the rod and through

Thanks Tom. I have a couple of little technical questions. First, I was wondering whether PG will go over epoxy and stick to it, if it is suffed up a bit, of course. Inversely, would epoxy go over PG? These questions arise from you comment about PG having a hot solvent. Now, if you tried to use PG between guides, it would be near impossible not to get some PG onto the edges (at least) of th

I have been reading up on this topic today, so I am feeling like I know more than I probably actually do. On the rod I have used as an illustration, the Fusion paint has three coats of polyurethane over it. In any event, I am done with that rod and from what I have read today, I will be doing things differently. I read a three year old post by Ralp (forgot the last name) with the best descrip

Thanks Bill. I read the article and learned a bunch. I have violated a number of the author's rules. The one blank I refinished was pretty dinged up, so I did sand it, but did not try to get out the deepest dings. I also used a polurethane on top of the Fusion, and this is an oil based product. Got a nice finish, but do not know how long it will hold up. As the article mentioned, this was o

Now we're talking. I have not used either of these products? I have not used either. Is one better than the other? I checked Mud Hole and they seem to come in a botte. Does the bottle have an applicator brush? So, I assume you brush it on and it levels out? There are urethanes, so could one use a polyurethane instead? I have some of this in a spray can. Using the spray can is outrageously

Whew, thanks for that clarification. Just for my information, if you wanted to refinish the whole rod, how would you go about it? What I did to my friend's rod, would that work well enough over the long haul.

Thanks again. No, the guides will not cover it and it would probably look strange if I did something decorative over it. I have some black enamel paint in a spray can that I used one time on my windshield wipe blade arms. I have always wondered whether that would have some form of rod application. You would think that all blacks are the same, but they seem to have different properties...whic

I do not have much experience actually refinishing rod blanks. A friend had a rod that had been dinged up through use and I took the guides off, some of which were also damaged, sanded it down to the graphite and fiberglass and repainted it with black fusion (Krylon) paint and then put three coats of polyurethane on it. I did this a month ago and have not gotten any complaints...yet. Your com

Thanks for your response. This gets me back to the original concerns. (1) does the whole rod have to be repainted? (2) would spray enamel do or do I need something like fusion paint, I think it is called? Mud Hole sells it. (3) It is just a little chip, and the rod is not new. I was just hoping there was some way to do a smal fix without redoing the whole rod, although taping off everything

144. Rod finish repair
I have a couple of rods that have blemishes in the finish. These are not dings or dents, but rather spots in the finish that have either come off, if that is possible, or were just missed when the original finish was applied. Is there a remedy? Short of repainting the rod (it is black), if that is even possible (if so what will stick to the rod), or is this just something one has to live with?

145. Pro Kote
I am using Pro Kote on my threads. It takes a long time to set up and dry. I have a rod wrapper and and a dryer, so I can have two rods going at one time. At what time can I remove a rod on which I have applied Pro Kote to some new threads from either the rod wrapper or dryer. I have been letting them run overnight, but perhaps I do not need to do that. I want to keep it turning so that it d
