I looked at my records and the guide configuration I posted in the previous thread was for a St. Croix 9 ft., 6 wt.
I used 12, 6 & 2s to an oversized loop top. I have an extra set. Could I use the extra set for the 5 wt.? I ordered a SCII, SCIV, 2-piece kit from Mud Hole because it was the cheapest way for me to go. It has guides with it. Opinions, please.
Thanks in Advance

What do you think of this configuration. I used it before and just wonder if anything has changed. I plan to use it on a 2-piece rod.
How about: 12, 6, and size 2s to the tip? I'm going to get an oversized loop tip top. This set-up seemed to work well for me on some other builds. I'm thinking up locking reel seat and half wells handle.

To me locking wraps serve no purpose. But, if it makes you feel more confident, use them.

No problem today. I warmed the bottles and it flowed fine onto my guides and wraps. Thanks for the help. I didn't think Flex Coat would get old. I've had these bottles, I think they're 2 oz., for 3 years. It seems fine to me. I've tried a few others, but I've stuck with Flex Coat Lite. I've never had any problem with it. Thanks, I'll mix a new batch tomorrow. I'll put the bottles in my pocket for awhile. I bet the resin was cold.

99. Milky Look
I have 2 old bottles of Flex Coat Lite which I haven't used in 2 years. Without warming the bottles in my pocket I mixed them in a shot glass in a bowl of lukewarm water. It looked like it mixed okay, but quickly began getting a milky look to it when I poured it on aluminum foil. Was it too cold and therefore setting up too quickly. I don't believe the flex coat gets old. I'd appreciate some ide

I used the spiral wrap on a spinning rod and it works great. I think it improved the casting.

The Tradition II kit is awesome. I've built on a few of them and so has my buddy. We both think they're great.

To me single foot guides are harder to keep straight for me on the length of the rod. I think they can get knocked loose easier, and I find single foot guides harder to wrap. People will tell you they are lighter, too, but I never bought into that argument. A s far as the weight, to me it's like the difference in weight be tween one feather and two. The two weight more, but it's not noticeable, a

Like Tom said, it's not necessary, but great to have. I have a tensioner that allows me to back up my wraps to re-wrap and it was a Godsend. My first wrapper didn't have it, but once I used one, I had to have it.

Thanks for posting the video, Nick. Are the the tools you scraped with made of wood? Does it work better than plastic?

I have a St. Croix SCII-SCIV 5 wt. fly rod I built and it's my favorite. It fishes nymphs and throws dry flies with equal ability. I just love them. Just my two cents.

There are blanks listed by someone, somewhere that have the soft tips that work great. I just can't remember who sells them.
Here they are:
