I just rebuilt a fiberglass surf rod. I stripped it totally painted with Krylon Fusion then used permagloss.

32. Re: First rod
Thank you all for your responses. As far as Adams ? I believe he was asking if my guide was turned around, not if it should be turned around. Yes mine is . Should it be? I don't know it's my first build. It seems to work. Tom I agree if placed PROPERLY the line should not touch but being my first build I figured I'd try it.

33. Re: First rod
Yes. I read somewhere that this is done on concept guides. Not sure exactly where, I did a ton of reading. I figured it couldn't hurt and with the line moving back and forth with the level wind I didn't want to chance the line rubbing the ramp on the guide.

I did just the opposite. I stripped an old spinning rod and converted it to conventional. Next time I will buy a new blank and start from scratch.

35. First rod
Finally finished my first rod. I tweaked the guides to better follow the curvature than what is shown in static. It casts well. Now to find some fish to test it on.

36. Epoxy
Has anyone ever tried Enrico Puglisi 30min epoxy on their rods? I have it for tying flies. It is waterproof and dries clear. I figured that I would try it for my epoxy ramp instead of 5min. I wasn't sure if anyone was having problems with their 5min yellowing.

Do you think this would look better the way it is or with black accents at front, between colors and end? Thank You for your thoughts.

Does this include the tip or is it 1-foot +1 + tip.

40. Static alignment
I know there are not supposed to be any flat spots when static testing guide placement. I was just wanting to ask if this is acceptable before I wrap. Hopefully I set this link properly. Please let me know what you think. Any comments/suggestions are welcome.

41. Tiger Wrap
I am trying my first Tiger. After reading much on the subject I think my underwrap is too tight. When burnishing the wrap barely moved. Will this still create the effect or should I rewrap? I thought after using CP the thread might loosen but I'm not sure if it is enough. Should the under-pattern be really noticeable? Thank You for replies in advance.

42. Grip question
For years I used hairspray to hold the grips on my golf clubs. On the golf clubs the hairspray lubricated the shaft to make it easier to slide the grip on and when it dried the grip held fast. Has anyone here tried this on their grips?

Are you looking to build or just suggestions on rod? I have 10' and 11' spinning that I use for stripers. 1 is fast and 1 is mod-fast (respectively) I like the mod-fast better. It will work more types of lures with a better weight range 1-4oz as opposed to 3-6oz. not sure of the blanks as I did not build them. I used to use 17lb mono before switching to 30lb braid and I fish from NJ to ME. I ha

48. Tip Top dilemma
Ok I have my rod torn down re painted and ready to re assemble. I measured the tip of my rod and the I.D. of the old tip and came up with 10/64. I ordered my guides and they arrived yesterday. The tiptop does not fit. No biggy right just get a new tiptop right?
Well herein lies my dilemma. The running guides I purchased are 10's and the smallest tiptop I can find for a 12/64 is 12. Can I do th

50. X-wrap question
I am planning on using X-wrap and a plate type reel seat on my new rod.
Has anyone ever tried to secure the plate on the blank, then slide the X-wrap over, shrink it and cut a hole in the wrap to expose the reel seat?
I thought I could then epoxy the edges so they don't lift.
I have never used either of these before. Does this sound feasable?
Any response is welcome.

I would like to stay away from transparency. The blake is so old that it is stained where the old wraps were or bleached where they were not.

I've called 3 of the body shops in my area and none of them will paint my blank. They claim the paint will not work for the bend required. Can I tint lumiseal and color the rod? Or should I paint the rod then seal?

53. Mixing guides
When building an acid wrapped rod I can use double foot casting guides to get line to bottom and then use single foot spinning guides to the tip. Is this correct?

Not sure of the blank. I received it 15 years ago. It's a 10' glass surf rod. Moderate action. I was told it is a Lami. I've thrown 1-4oz plugs without problem. It was spinning and I'm changing it to conventional.

Thank you all for your responses. The blank is just about clean. I used a knife because a razor wasn't readily available and I think I destroyed the blade, none of my sharpeners will put the edge back. I'll be going over it with a scotch brite pad to finish it up. The original builder did not want this thing to be refinished. After 2 days of scraping there is still places where I cannot scrape th

56. blank painting
I see there are many threads on this topic. My question is. If I take my blank to an auto body shop do I need to explain anything to them, or should they know what to use as far as flex and top coat?

On conventional reels I know that you have to take into consideration the movement of the line for your 1st guide placement. Is this the same for level wind? Does the line guide on the reel actually move when casting ?

Ok I have been doing some research and I think I have my new rod configuration but I wanted to run it by the experts to see if I'm close. I'm building a 10' conventional surf rod. I'm using a O'quinn style spiral so 1st guide (from reel) is approx 45 degrees and 4th is at 180. There will be 10 guides + tip. The tip of my blank is 4mm so I will be using a 10-10 tip therefore my guide set-up will b
