I'm about to redo an older fiberglass fly rod. the original finish is scuffed and dirty. I'm going to 3M it down and then recoat before wrapping.
Question is, what finish to use. Perma gloss, maybe too "Hot" and screw things up if I don't get all the original finish off. Clear coat auto finish. Done this before on blanks and am ok with it. Spar varnish probably what is on there. I've go a dipping tank for bamboo work and this would also be easy. other ideas? comments? Thanks Re: refinishing fiberglass, finish ?

Gary,
Is the blank painted and then clear coated, or just clear coated over the natural color? If it's painted I can see just scuffing it and coating with the clear, but if it's a natural color blank, I think you'd get a better finish by stripping it down and then recoating - no worries that way about incompatibility of finishes, and no uneven areas due to nicks, scratches, etc. For the painted blank, I would use the automotive clear coat - it doesn't have the amber tint of spar varnish, goes on with a thinner coating, and is harder when it cures than spar. For the unpainted blank, I would use either the permagloss or automotive clear coat. Re: refinishing fiberglass, finish ?

I just rebuilt a fiberglass surf rod. I stripped it totally painted with Krylon Fusion then used permagloss. Re: refinishing fiberglass, finish ?
