17671. The yearly reminder
Those of you attending the Expo this coming weekend are again reminded of a few simple rules which are common to most all consumer/trade events, of which the ICRBE is no different.
Come and have a good time, but remember that any business or potential business derived from the event belongs entirely to those who purchased booth or table space. Therefore, keep any business advertising type app

Technically, the first guide on a fly rod is the stripping guide. All the rest are running guides. But I know what John is referring to.
A ringed guide of any type will suffice for the stripping guide. The number of legs/feet is unimportant outside of whatever durability is required. A single foot guide can and usually does function every bit as well as double foot guide in this location.

17674. Re: Shelf Life of Epoxy?????
There is no appreciable shelf life - it will last forever.
Warm the resin in the micro wave for a couple of 10 second bursts to return it to the original smoothness.
Keeping it in a warmer area will help prevent crystallization of the resin.

More than likely, you'll have several other custom rod builders on your flight. I'd display the symbol somewhere and expect somebody will approach you.

The type guides you use doesn't matter.
The first 180 guide should be the same size, or smaller, than the rest of the running guides.

It would be more sensitive. Can you feel it? Probably not. At some point we're talking such small amounts that the human hand isn't able to register such a thing.

You don't have enough material in the thin tip area to do any real sanding. If scraping the paint off won't do it, get the next larger tiptop size.

No, Woodcraft will not be there. Klingspor's WoodWorking Shop will be, however. Their product line is similar, if not even more extensive.

Like most places, tackle shops are on the downswing. But, you have K&J in Jamestown about 10 to 15 minutes east of the Showplace. Fishing Fever is 10 minutes to the south on Fairfield Road. Gander Mountain in Greensboro. Bass Pro Shops in Concord/Charlotte.

Let me mention one other idea - with a pin punch, tap the side of the ferrule that is dimpled. That may move the pin back out of the opposite side, exposing just enough that you can grasp it with a good pair of strong tweezers and remove it.

17685. Exposition Rods
The favorite rod displayed in the glass front cases in the Atrium of the ShowPlace will be awarded a "custom rod building tools" prize package. Inside will be a point to point tool, calipers, measuring tools, fine craftsman tweezer set, specialty clamps and a few other rod building specialty tool items. We may include a rod blank as well.

17686. Re: marbling with thread
That's well covered in the article. The bottom layer should be where your contrast lies - so a light and a dark color. The top layer is what more or less determines the overall color/shade of the wrap. If I wanted a wild blue-toned version, I'd wrap black and white or black and yellow on the bottom, and use blue for the top thread.

You're really the only one who can determine the smallest size guides that will work with your particular set up.
Locking wraps are always a good idea, mainly to keep from snagging and pulling the guides out when traveling or transporting the rod.

I believe Karen is out of town today and it may be Monday before she can reply to you.
I did speak to her yesterday and they have quite a large number of blanks that will be featured in the "trash can specials." Many hundreds, if not thousands of blanks. All types from what she told me. The model numbers would be hard to peg down due to the large assortment they're bringing. It woul

17691. Re: telescoping fly rod butt
Now that I don't know - I made the assumption this was the same type blank that is used for bass flipping sticks. If it's just the fighting butt I'd have to defer to someone that's actually used that sort of thing. If it's well made there shouldn't be any problem. Any issues with "wobble" will be a matter of how well it's designed and fitted.

17692. Re: telescoping fly rod butt
They should be just as stable as telescoping bass flipping sticks. A quality telescoping blank isn't going to wobble nor be weak. You are dealing with a much longer rod, of course, so the leverage on that part is going to be extensive. Go with a quality make and you'll be fine.

17693. Re: marbling with thread
That technique belongs to Scott Throop and Bill Colby. You can read all about it in the Volume 10 #2 issue of RodMaker Magazine.
What he told you is partly correct, but it's a bit more involved than that. It's a moire effect created by 2 layers of thread running in opposite directions. The top layer has a thread precisely spaced so the underlying layer shows through in part.

17695. Re: Turning Cork Handles
That's certainly true, but turning cork isn't like turning wood - it shapes quickly and easily. Most learn, and learn quickly and very well, with the information in the various publications available.
The one real problem, is the quick rate at which cork reduces. It goes very fast so when practicing, buy the cheapest cork you can find. You're going to ruin a few handles before you get the pro

RodMaker has had several in-depth articles on this process.
The book, "Rod Building Guide" by Amato Publications has a full chapter with step by step color photographs on the process. Most any of the sponsors will have it.
Andy Dear's video on turning shows how to turn your own cork grips. Several sponsors should have this.

It will be successful but you'll end up with a hole on the other side of the ferrule as well. I suspect the head of that pin has broken and detached over the years.
