6 hours won't be the time period you're after. As you said in your last paragraph, you either have to do it more quickly (about an hour apart) or wait a good 24 hours (longer in low humidity areas) before putting on another coat. You can try sanding the PG but the darn stuff is so hard that that sort of thing is tough. I don't know what your current situation is without seeing a photo, so I c

There have been some inconsistency with the current Gudebrod 811. I hope it's not a bad batch you have there. After the CP has dried, the thread should appear much as it did on the spool. ...........

High humidity simply makes it set and cure faster. PG is a moisture curing urethane. ..........

Once dry, there should be no "transparent" areas. If there are, something is amiss. How old is that Gudebrod CP? It sounds almost like their old laquer formulation from 20 years ago.

"I set it aside to cure for about 6 hours..." Per the instructions you just listed, an hour is more than enough., When you wait that long the solvent can somewhat attack the underlying coat. You need them all applied close enough that they meld together. Now you may be okay and just not used to how PG looks. It's not smooth like epoxy and never will be. It has an "eggshell&q

Marc offers perhaps the best suggestion - crank up the heat in your finishing area. For every 18F increase in temp from about 70F, you halve the set and cure time. Even 10 degrees will make a noticeable difference. .........

If you read the instructions on the bottle I think you'll uncover your problem - 6 hours is not an acceptable time frame between coats. Much too long. ..............

The alcohol was most likely your problem. Never use solvent as the last step in surface preparation. You can test your Chromaseal easy enough - take a scrap blank and wipe with alcohol. Then rinse with water. Scuff with Scotchbrite, then seal with Chromaseal. Let dry and apply finish. Does it fisheye? If yes, throw it out. But I'm betting it won't. The problem is elsewhere, you just need to e

17622. Re: The Show
It's all below - read to your heart's content. There have been 30 or 35 posts on the event already. See the photos on the photo page. Record attendance, record sales for most. The biggest and best yet. .........

I can only assume you don't subscribe to RodMaker. We've done all sorts of new and ground breaking handle stuff in the last couple years. Foam core, carbon skin grips are only the latest. .........

Charlie, Such a special issue will require about 200 man hours to produce and roughly $40,000 to print and mail. I'm going to need a guarantee of about 12,000 to 12,500 more orders to move forward. You'll buy one, see how many you can get to order one as well. ............

17625. Photos
I took about 180 photos and put up a few of them just now. The next issue of RodMaker will have a lot more including most of the spectacular rods on display this year. There were a ton and some were the most beautiful and unusual I've seen in 30 years of being involved in custom rod buidlng. The usual rumor-mongers that always say our attendance is "off" should pick up a few napkins

The 27X method is better on all counts. It's based on factors that matter, not an arbitrary spool upsweep angle that may be different for reels even of the same size and spool diameter. .......................

It will take a few days to get things back under control and crunch some numbers, but in the meantime here is what we know for certain... Attendance was up. Way up. I never thought in these tough economic times that we’d have another attendance increase, but we did and it was a big one. When I post photos in the next day or so you’ll see what I mean. We just thought last yearââ

Cutting from the tip will slow the action, so will cutting from the butt. Cutting the tip won't change the power, but cutting the butt will change the power. In the end, doing what you suggest will leave you with a pretty disappointing blank, in my opinion. The Common Cents System can be used to determine exactly what effect any cutting will have on action and power, before you actually

17635. 2009 Expo
Attendance was up. Way up. Made last year seem small by comparison. Truly incredible. I'll try to put up some photos on Monday - you aren't going to believe your eyes. I don't think anyone, including myself, ever thought that any custom rod building event could draw this type crowd. Over 1800 custom rod builders attended today (Saturday) and we still have Sunday coming up. ..................

There are tons of them on hand. Tons of everything. The 2009 ICRBE beats the heck out of any previous event. Bigger and better than ever before. It's quite something to see. I imagine photos will start turning up in the next day or so. It's huge. Even larger than last year. .................

17638. Re: EXPO
Not sure about the restaurants - J. Basul Noble's is next door to the Radisson. You don't get much more "fancy" than that. It has a worldwide reputation. Nobel's also has a nice lounge/bistro (far less expensive than the main restuarant) that seats a lot more people than the lounge at the Radisson. I suspect many will find their way over there during the weekend. .............

I spoke to the folks that handle the concessions at the Expo about the fact that most out of towners have never had North Carolina style barbeque. They work with one of the restaurants in Lexington during the International Home Furnishings Market each year and have barbeque on their menu. They have agreed to offer it at the Expo this year as well. ............
