Thank you all for your help/input. I think it was, as listed above, too thick a coat of epoxy all at one go I really gloped it on and as a result it was not all that even. It is still cold in my basement, here in the frozen north, so this must have slowed the cure of the eopxy. I am useing American Tackle high build, mostly because that is what I have to use right now. I did not take off bot

I tried my first tiger wrap, gold metalic, and black size A underwrap, a thick coat of high build epoxy, must have used enough to coat a whole rod for a 4 inch wrap. When I did the top wrap, black size A, 24 hours later I had a hard time getting the thread to wrap even, because it stuck and created a grouve in the epoxy I could not burnish it into better shape. So I suspect, I might have mad

I mostly do thre fly thing, but someone wants a home built spin rod. So I would like to tap into your wisdom. They would like a 2 piece about 6 foot about 6-12lb line spin rod for general use, not real expensive. Any suggestions of brand and where to order from would be helpfull. Cheers Ron.

I did a serch and did not come up with anything on this topic. I have used flexcoat CP and it does not work wel for me. I have not found any places that still have 811 in stock. One supplier said that the 811 was being re formulated and would be back on the market in a few moths. Is this true? I have used my 811 sparelingly but will run out eventually of course. Any ideas of replacem

I am not glad to see somebody with the same problem. I ordered 118 and got 7 bottles of Flexcoat instead. Tried it out with the same results, blochey and dull colors. So I am now sending it back. I have used 811 with a lot less problems ( not 100% mind you). I have never used brillance if you or somebody would be so kind as to post a source I would be happy to order up a bottle or two.

I want to build a med salt water spin rod,(not for me), line wt of 15-25lbs line. I thought a split grip would be nice. I searched some of the photos of split grips and lots do not have a grip above the reel seat. How does one cast a spin rod with this configuration? Do youi just grab the line and the blank? I fly fish and do not really know much about this. Any help it clear this up for me wo

I was looking at the photos of wood handles and Russ Miller has a super curly maple handle reel seat combo that is very bright. Russ or any one else know what sort of finish would be waterproof and still remain bright and not dark and or yellowish.? Cheers Ron

Thanks for the help, I wiped a section with alcohol and it did soften it and the unwanted opaqueness went away. I let it dyr and it seems good. I will work on it in sections so it does not get streched out of shape, wrap saved so far. Cheers Ron

55. CP help
I have finished a foot long butt wrap and planed to put on the epoxie today. I had to let the rod sit for a month and put on another coat of CP last night to prevent any possible leaks. I have don this in the past as I have to wait untill the kids are out of the house, to atractive to a toddler and the cat. I put on the CP last night and went to bed while dreams if a finished rod danced

I use the spatula method and on my last rod I put some epoxie on the spatula and held it on top of the rod verticle and then lowered the spatula down to the wrap edge. This put on a line of epoxie that was very straight on the thread edge. I then used the spatula to thin the epoxie inward on to the rest of the wrap. I did use a toothpick on the guide side to start with and then used the above onc

I found this page from a knife making site. It is how to make your own stabilized wood, useing wood hardner. I have not tried it but it could be used for wood reel seats. I am waiting to get the stuff and for it to warm up so I can do it outside, since there is a warning to do it with good ventilation. I guess this is not true stabelized wood but is the only thing I have seen that I could

I do not build a lot of rods, but I do like to put on butt wraps on the rods I do build. Yes the cp is a leap of faith with a lot of re wraps and epoxie scraching. I did post my woes a little while back and Putter had the solution for my guide wrap problem. I also cut it with a little alcohol on the first coat and full strength on the second coat. Not very emperical but it worked this time. My

Gerry: I have been coating the entire wrap as well, but the problem occurs in the aera where the guide foot tunnel is as the epoxie gets in the tunnel and wets the thread from underneath the CP which I have put on top. Cheers Ron.
