Hey Phil, You too! I still have and fish with two SpeedMaster casting rods. They are the most comfortable factory rods I ever owned, the way the butt blends into the reelseat and continues to become the blank. I've had one of the shops give me a broken lower half of a heaver model, which I grafted a nice stiff blank to and now use it for flippin and punchin the pads. It's a little heavy in the han

Laurent, The first rod "I" had seen with a split grip handle was a Berkley "SERIES ONE" which had the split grip and high framed guides. I could be mistaken but, I believe it was in the late 1980's.I remember this because K-mart was selling them at $100. and they were just lumped together in a bin with some of the other $29. rods. They were light and crisp, cutting edge at the

635. Re: UGLY STIK BLANKS
Yea their still made, just not available to rodbuilders as blanks. Some sponsors may have some left in stock but one piece 11 &12 footers are hard to come across.Shipping costs are another problem for something that big.So first you have to locate them, then you have to go pick it up.There are alternatives to Ugly Stix, you'll have to gas up your keyboards and fly over to the big sites to see

Bill, Gabe deserves a little credit for what He's doing at such a young age. I just think what others are doing wrong because of the peer pressure or the surroundings growing up in. That's why I did it! No thanks necessary' just pass it on.

Brad, Believe it or not but that single strand nylon thread might actually be dyed monofiloment. I have had rods in with the same characteristics and have found them to be wrapped with either dyed or painted over mono.In a lot of cases these wrappings would bleed its tint onto the blank. All of these rods were inexpensively made over seas I would say in the 60's. If you could post a picture it wou

Tuff Butts are always my first choice because no arbors are needed under the slick butt. It's fitted to the aluminum butt which incorporates the reelseat. No need to reinforce the blank between the seat and nylon sleeve (slick butt) down to the gimbal like you must when using pieces.
NO,"I" would not use EVA for any type of arbor material.

Bill, I have built a 6'6" worm rod for myself and I love it. The line shoots thru the guides without any slap. Its a pleasure to fish. I have another that's mocked up. A nine ft. two piece steelhead rod. I expect it to have the qualities.

Lorenzo, Some of the ways I have done it over the years: silver foil tape, white paint, White Out, white shoe polish, Createx auto air brush paint in base white. The air brush paint is a water base type but, must be set with heat. After you paint the area just set it with a heat gun or hair drier. I never had a problem with any of these applications. Remember, anything you have to do to keep the b

I too agree with Mike. Not that Roger's idea is wrong, just that after you modify the trigger clamp its easier to use.

Greg, Did you ever build with Fuji's BHNOG or BHNLG guides? Very sturdy frames and heavy duty rings.

Tony, All I'm trying to do is define what custom is. I don't care who, where, why, or what reason anyone builds rods or for how much they charge and profit by doing it. That's their business. I didn't discourage anyone by saying it was a bad idea to build rods for a shop. I was asked to do the same but, I felt it was of a lesser goal of my abilities and besides I'm not in it for the money. All I
