Last night someone gave me a half dozen fly blanks assorted lenghts. They have no brand name only stickers at the blank base with GSF an GSL suffix at the begining. Anyone know what they are? They are a deep dark brown color. (Fenwick?)

123. Re: tiger
If Mr. Throops wrap sells the rod maybe we should send him a percentage of the sale? Oh did I say that out loud! Seriously I just did my first Throop Tiger Wrap rite on the rod itself ( I new the directions in the article would not steer me wrong) it came out great. I'm going to do one on a fly rod. Thank you Mr. Throop for sharing that great wrap.

124. Need surf rod
Ok, I'm looking for a spinning surf rod. I'm using a Penn 7500 reel spooled with 20lb test and going to be throwing 5/8 to 2 ounce plugs. I need 2 piece due to transport issues. I know I could just go to a "box store " and get one BUT I really appreciate the info and adivce all the rod builders give here and want to give someone my business. I build fly rods and really don't have the t

127. Pushing My Luck ???
Ok, Volume 10 Issue 2, Rod Maker magazine. on page 21 Mr. Scott Throop has a photo of a rod that has some unbelievable wraps with some "flames" coming from the gold bands. How in the heck was that done? I'm going to take a shot and say it was painted and dragged up the rod. Ok it's a shot.

128. Re: Tru oil question
Rob,
If you want to keep a lighter color (more original color) of the cork apply a coat of the sealer first and let that dry then apply the Tru-Oil. I apply it with my finger also. I have applied up to 8 coats with Tru-Oil and the grip looks great and cleans well also. The grip will become very smooth and glossy.

129. Re: I'm Going In
Tom,
Apology accepted, I would not and hope no one else would do just what you have mentioned. I was reffering to having some shirts made up with business name on them and phone # to wear around in public or when fishing. So that brings me to think that maybe everyone should not wear any clothing at any shows that have any manufactures name on them either. This discussion could go in many dire

130. I'm Going In
Ok,
Being a fly rod builder, I'm diving in and going to try a tiger wrap (first time)on a spin rod a buddy wants me to build for him. Any input from anyone? I love venturing into the unknown the first time, guess that's what keeps me doing this!! Bill I like the T shirt idea on another post.

Ok, I've been building fly rods for the most part and now a friend has brought me a 71/2 ft and an 8ft 1 piece spin rods to build for him. He has all the components (great). Cork tape grip (no problem). Problem is where do you locate the reel seats on the rods? Any certain distance from butt end. I have read Mr. Kirkmans book "Rod Building Guide" and understand to test cast the rods bef

Bill,
I take the end of the fly line and bend it over to make a loop. I then take my fly tying bobbin with my 6/0 thread and start wrapping the thread over where the end of the line meets the fly line and just keep wrapping. I get to the point where I hold the loop in one hand and the fly line in the other and swing the bobbin around so it wraps left and right about 1/2 inch total lenght. When

134. Re: Here we go again
Man I knew I'd be stirring up a bucket of bees in a honey jar when I started this. I have been marking the "hard bump" and then checking the rod for straightness and building on the straight axis. Thanks for your complete feed back. Yea my gut feeling was that no one ever complained about any rods or brought any back for performance problems so I knew something was right.

Ok, to bring back an on ongoing question. I have been building flyrods for over 10 years now and I do get the magazine and read this forum. I want to thank all of you builders who take the time to post here and answer question we all have. I decided to take the plunge and start a small business building and selling custom flyrods. (which brings up a whole alot more questions). I was watching a vi

I had a friend give me some rods that belonged to his grandfather. some have old grips and guides but some others are just blanks. They seem to be glass material. Since I build primarily fly rods , How do you determine what size line each blank can throw? These are very old one piece blanks and rods which I'm going to refurbish. I don't even know who mfg. these.

Birchwood Casey does make a sealer you can put on before the finish coat of tru oil. Then you only need to put 1-3 coat of oil on. I sand with 3000 grit paper between coats.

142. Mandrels
I want to start building my fly grips on mandrels. Never used them before. But if Andy Dear is selling them they must be useful. I'm going to guess you need to place some wax on them so the material will not stick to mandrel. BUT if I want to shape the grip on the mandrel in my lathe. What's keeping the grip from spinning free on the mandrel??

Tom,
I am not professional rod builder but have gone head over heels with this hobby. When I wrap all my guides I always check for aligment and seem to always have to align one or two guides that are not lined up perfect. How would you align the guides if your using epoxy to mount them? Is there some system that I'm missing to keep the guides lined up? Since I am building my grips with birch

Ok, My old cam lathe that I set up for turning my handles has finnaly said it's time to retire. I need some guidance on what and where to purchase a real rod lathe. I find turning my own grips is the way to go. Any help would be great.
Tom, what a great magazine and web site. To all who post their experiences on the site and in the magazine thanks.
