Determine how much depth you have of cork. (difference between rod OD and cork OD) drill a 1/32 or 1/64 hole to blank depth. Pour mixture into syringe than set syringe in hot water for about 3-4 minutes to make mixture very thin. Using the syringe inject epoxy into the small void between blank and cork. After all done take some cork dust and cover hole. Now you have a repair with original look.

If you like the feel of raw cork but want the protection you can use the Birchwood Casey sealer only. 2 coats of just sealer will give protection and that cork feel. Dave

Eric, How much area do you have to work with in total? Don't waste your time trying to put everything in one room. Keep the work areas separate from your wrap and finish room. I have my work shop in my basement and my wrapping and finish room is on my third floor. Dave East Bay Custom Fly Rods

Use twist lock cord caps, you have to twist them to secure the connection. This way they won't come apart to easy or won't come partially apart leaving exposed live blades. Just be sure to install the female side on the side the power is coming from (line side). And the male side on the other (load) side.

Maryann, Leave about 3/4 of an inch longer than you need. Put heat to it using a hair dryer till its smooth as glass. If you have a tad bit sticking out longer than you want just snip it with some shears. Just think of it this way, if it does not come out the first time just cut it off and try again. Thats how we learn. Dave East Bay Custom Flyrods R.I.

Jim , If your color blind then you might want to re number your spools with a number system for each manufacture you work with, and keep brands separate. As sometimes those sticky labels come off. Dave

I have found the same as Phil. I build only fly rods (a few spinners and casters for friends) and use the lite finishes with multiple coats. The varnishes and uries seem to darken to much for my liking and seem to "crack" in time. Dave

I have been using Tru oil on my grips for a long time. (Birch and cork) If you use only oil it will darken the grip a bit, if you use many coats then the grips get slick. I found many of my customers do not like slick grips. If you use the Birchwood Casey sealer first, the grip will not get as dark as using straight oil. Then you can give a coat or 2 over the sealer for a nice natural color. Whe

10 wt is all you need, make sure you get a good reel with a quality cork drag, that's what takes the beating the most, it's those lighting runs that stop and start on a heart beat that make the difference. dave Loren East Bay Custom Fly Rods Warren,RI

A customer dropped off a 2 piece 3M( Sci Anglers) 9'3" 9wt fly blank 100% graphite, but what I never seen before was the male ferrule is aluminum and the female is also aluminum, male on the tip section and female on butt section. The ferrules are glued into the blank the blank is a dark brown color. Anyone seen these before? Just curious, Dave Loren East Bay Custom Flyrods

I agree with Roger. I run the AC in the room to dry things out before I finish. Sometimes to much humidity will cause thing to take longer also.

You can mount a hand drill upside down and spin it down that way. Be sure to secure the drill very securely. Dave East Bay Custom Fly Rods

I build fly rods and my last build I went ahead and applied the decal directly to the rod. Is that wrong? I don't know it was an experiment and I had no trouble at all. At least so far but I will keep an eye on that rod to see what happens if any. By the way they are from Decal Connection they do a great job. Dave Loren East Bay Custom Fly Rods Warren,RI

On the raffle side, if your club or organization is going to be holding a raffle for a rod and you are going to different events also and selling tickets for that raffle be sure to check with the state and local police. Some state require a "permit" to sell raffle tickets. Permit fees are small. ie. 5-10 bucks.

I just applied my peel & stick decals to a rod last night. The blank was a matte gray, and I did put down a base wrap of black thread and did put one finish coat on before decal application. I'm glad I did, the base wrap made the decal really pop. Because the the base wrap was black and after applying the decal I noticed an ever slight edge line around the decal but no problem a black sharpie

Just received my sheet of peel & stick decals yesterday. Nice really nice they have a clear carrier sheet over the decal so you never touch the decal when applying them. Someone thought this out. Debbie & Chuck are great to work with. Dave Loren East Bay Custom Fly Rods
