Beautiful work, I'm going out on a limb here. Do you find that one brand of finish works better than another with the marbling?

I 100% agree with Greg. It's all about performance and where your going with this equipment and how you treat your equipment. In my experience if you hand a blindfolded person a 13'2" 7wt with snake guides then give him the same rod with single foots he or she will notice no difference at all. Casting distance all depends on your ability to adjust to the rod your throwing.

I agree Todd.
Roger to do what your suggesting means I will need to take my shoes off cause I can't count that high. :)
Thanks for all your input.

I have been building fly rods for a long time and a lot of times my finish was not setting very well. But for some reason after letting the rod sit in a warm room for a bit the finish would cure. I think back now and I believe this was just pure luck that in cured at all. I was told a long time ago to use a 50/50 mix of the finish coat material so I went ahead and purchased a powder scale and mix

I'm here in the Northeast, Are you looking for 4 pc or 2 pc. I have the inventory of a builder who has passed and will look thru my inventory if your interested. Most are Talons, Forecast, Rainshadows, some no clue what they are. I build these for friends and myself.

Just make sure it has double lock rings. Most mfg state what size rods they will fit. I like the Pac Bay. Quality at a good price.

Sid,
For future reference, Go to Davis Instruments and get yourself a digital powder scale. It weighs in grains and grams. It also comes with a 50gr weight to calibrate the scale once in a while. Put your measuring cup on the scale and zero it out then mix 50/50. Pour your resin first then hardner. It's ok to add a tad more hardener but not the other way around. I agree put the rod in the sun f

I agree with Ross. Couple of coats of CP should do it just fine.

I agree with Phil, 12's and 10's are all you need for a 5wt. I'm not bashing anyone here but I have found over my 18yrs of building fly rods that the REC strippers have a tendency of spreading apart in time. Don't know why but have used them quite a few times and something about the way they are coiled that they do tend to spread a bit in time.

I assume your going to replace the fighting butt? Once you get the butt off that will tell you how the seat was installed also how much space you have between the seat and rod and that will determine how deep you can cut. Take a dremel and cut lenght wise up to about 1/2" of hood do not cut into hood. Make 2 cuts 180 degree from each other. Now make a cut across the seat and peel each side o

Roger, My bro in law is a hot rod builder and a motorcycle ice racer an there are lots of custom builders who put there names on the builds, they just do it in a way that it blends really nice. Also if someone comes to you to build a rod for them, chances are very high that they have seen your work somewhere some how so they would know what to expect. So they will need to tell you what they want,

I guess the next thing will be "do I get a discount when you put your logo on it". Then I will say did you get a discount when you bought your last car with Ford or what ever on the front and rear.

53. Spin & Cast tips
I noticed when looking at tip top sizes there is two numbers , one # and another in parenthesis. Ex. 6 (5.5) It's been a while since ordering tips so when I measure my rod size and need a size 6 which number do I use when looking at catalog sizes?

Well if you use a 10wt you can back cast those pans rite into the fryer no trouble. Ok try a 4-5wt. Since you have not built a lite rod just be careful with the tip area.

Bill,
Just use denatured alcohol. It will evaporate fast enough not to cause any problems even if does get on threads. Just let the rod sit for 5- 10 minutes before finish coating. Use a tack cloth and dab the thread wraps before applying finish coat. You purchase these at any auto supply store that sells waxing products or auto paint supplies.

60. Snake Bit
Ok, I have been building fly rods for quite some time, over 16 years. So recently I was talking with another rod builder and he had kept referring to "snake" so I'm thinking he's meaning the snake guides so when asked about "snake" he told me about Snake Brand guides. So I ordered the Snake Brand guides and after wrapping the first fly rod with these guides I had to call Mike
