I would love a comparison from anybody familiar with both. It will be for spinning rod chasing something like smallmouth.

The reel is spinning. Shimano makes some of their models in that size, but not all of them. I have a Sahara 750 and it is LIGHT! The size of the spool is about 37mm so a BYAG16 is pushing toward the smaller end; and 27 x 37mm will put the choker guide about 39" out. I have a feeling I will go BYAG16, 8 then BLAG4s; but I'll get various sizes and see.

If setting one of these up for 4lb braid and a Shimano 750 size reel, would you start with a BYAG16 or go down to a 12 for the first guide? Also, do I need a two guide transition for line that small? I will using BLAG4 running guides.

Is the butt beefy enough to set the hook with light jigs and small plastics lile 3" Senkos or 2-1/2" Yum crawfish?

Any opinions on what this blank shines at? I live in Upstate SC so I tend to hunt trout, bass, panfish and whatever bites each summer on the coast.

I did what Tom says above several years ago for my brother in law and it works great. He throws 2 to 3 oz. The running guides are BLG10 and they pass knots fine.

What is an "SJW"? If the river is fairly fast moving, is it hard to get the crankbaits down quickly enough?

A follow-up question - is a 3" senko too large for these fish? Do I need to stay down around 2" lures?

I recently built a Forecast F662-4 and a SP600 to be used as UL spinning rigs for trout. Over the holidays I am going to hit some local rivers and I want to get down low in the deep pools, specifically targeting the larger browns that most fisherman don't get down to. Does anybody have thought on what to use to get down that deep? Would 1/16 or 1/8 ounce jigs holding small crawfish immitations

I agree with Tom above - tell him what he has (without attacking the other builder) and what you can do for him. If he opts to replace the guide with another hardloy, I would do it and charge him a fair price. If he wants to upgrade to TiSic, and I would give him sound counsel about whether or not that is even worth doing given the type and use of rod it is, then I would do that and charge him

I have noticed the prices of some Lami blanks coming down in the last couple of years and wondered if that was an indicator that production has gone overseas.

Do you use plugs that weigh 5oz? On my 1226, which I sometimes use to throw 4, I use all of that length in order to get leverage. But I also have a 10' Lami rated 2 to 5 which really likes three, and I notice that I usually don't need all the leverage and move my left hand up some on the butt. I would test it some but I think I could get plenty of leverage on a 9' rod w/o needing the butt all

Forecast F864-4 looks pretty sweet, is priced right and packs small.

I used LS Supreme Hi Build to cover a label yesterday and it worked great; however, a large "pock" appeared late in the cure. There is only one and it happened over exposed blank surface, not as a result of air under a thread. My questions are:
If it's an air bubble, do I just shave it off and apply another coat of epoxy?
Is it possibly a silicone issue (never had one before), a

Assuming that there are no knots to pass and that the line is relatively light, is there any reason for a first guide larger than a 10, assuming that size guide will keep the line off your hand? I have gone largely to spiral wraps with micro guides and have started stepping down as rapidly as possible. Is there any advantage to a larger first with regards to casting?

Robert,
I'm actually asking to try and understand the differences. I have the 845MC AllStar Titanium and love it, but I'm not looking for another just like it; I'm wondering how XMG 843 and 844 popping blanks compare to what I already have.

I have the old BAST845MC-3 built as a casting rod and love it, and I like the look of the XMG popping rods, but I don't want to built another rod exactly like my Allstar. How do the XMG LP843 and 844 compare to what I have in action and power. I gather that both of these have modulus in the 50s. The XMG look lighter, but I can't really tell anything beyond that.

202. Re: Surf spiral?
I was just casting a 13' spiral wrap today - old Rainshadow ISP1565, 10-20lb line, 1-2.5oz - and it cranks 2oz a long way and seems to work fine. I also casted for the first time a 9' steelhead rod wrapped the same way and loved it. Some of the guys using heavier line and shock leaders may have some considerations I don't though.

203. Re: beetle spin rod
I built the SB720-4 for my son this winter and I agree that is my favorite option for a light bass rod - stout in the butt for what it is, light weight and extremely packable. I think 1/32 is well below the optimum casting range though. I also agree with Tom K. regarding longer rods. I seldom grab anything under 7 ft. The longer rods enable me to throw farther and give me a much more fun figh

What about the Loomis SJ6400 or 700? I have a Forecast F662-4 which I built with a TN grip. I use a Sahara 750 with 4lb Fireline and it performs great. It is a little whippy - I would prefer something with a faster action - but will throw really light stuff and breaks down to just over 18".

I would look at a TN grip, either cork or graphite. I have both and love them. The good thing about the TN grip is that you can also move the reel forward or back to optimize your balance. The cork grip I have even feels a little like a full wells grip given the way it flares at the front.

Given how it penetrates, along with how hard it is, will it work in combination with the thread so as to "glue" the thread on? Sort of like concrete and rebar?
Forum: rodboard 15 years ago

Does PG, which I use on rods light enough for micro guides, serve to "glue" the guide in when it soaks through the thread?

That helps. So I could fish any jig that way if I wanted to? Even bending and modifying the shape of the hook if I thought it beneficial?
Forum: rodboard 16 years ago

What's the difference? Is it just a matter of how you fish it?
