I was thinking about one of these for throwing 1/8oz spinners, senkos and light saltwater stuff. I have the Rainshadow 843-3 but it is too moderate for my taste. I would like something with a stiffer butt and faster action. Where does the SB841-3 accel?

I plan to use a spiral setup with micro guides out near the end. Any thoughts on how many guides I need total?

Tom, That's helpful info. Do you think it has to be a fast action ultra-light like the one you explain how to build in an older issue of RM, or will most 7 foot rods get the job done. I have a 7 foot ISB843-3 that I like, but it has a more moderate action that flexes down into the butt. I have not doubt, however, that I could easily throw a senko with it.

I'm thinking 6.5 or 7 feet. I want to toss 3-5" Senkos w/o weight but also be able to stick a bass and pressure him away from cover. 3 or 4pc is also nice, if possible.

I'm not sure what you mean. This is a new reel and only has an adjustment knob on the right side. Maybe I don't understand what I need to be looking for.

Speaking as a very small time amatuer builder, I will really hate to see it if the show doesn't happen. I've been three of the last four years and had a great time; and I've learned some great tricks and come home every year fixed up with some awesome stuff. I sure hope there will be a way to keep it going, but I can understand completely that Tom has been exposed to a substantil risk in doing

I was test casting a rod I just built for a buddy, using the new 5600C4 he bought. I set the rod up for this reel and used a spriral wrap. At first I was concerned the spiral wrap was contributing to backlashes, but when I put one of my old reels on it, the problem went away. I am getting the impression this reel is really FAST with the factory oil. Do they use the yellow label Rocket Fuel as

Bob McKamey at Custom Tackle also carries it, I believe. I got some from him at High Point.

A local hardware store has numerous colors in the hi-vis spray paiint - the really bright colors with some kind of reflective agent build in. I thought it would be good for a bait rod to help a kid watch and see if the tip twitches. Will this type paint work on a surface that flexes like a rod blank? I'm thinking the tip-most 4 to 6 inches.

I think I had the additional problem of a cool evening, and for the sake of saving a few pennies we don't keep the house very warm, so I probably had that working against me too.

I picked up some of the LS Supreme in High Point and like it, but it says it has a "gel time" of 5 hours. Is that right? I used some on a long section where I labelled a rod and turned it for a little over 2 hours. The next morning I found that I had a few waves where the finished had sagged after I went to bed. I turn by hand and don't have a dryer motor, which is no big deal, I ju

I'm sure Karry gave you a good recommendation and the blank will work fine for spinning. The fact that they don't list spinning guides in their placement chart is probably because most people set it up casting; but it will work great for spinning with the VS3 guides stepping down to F guides toward the end. Look up the article on New Concept spacing and have at it.

How far from the reel would your first guide typically be? On a standard casting setup I would normally put that well over 20", but does it make more sense to make the transition earlier? I will be using size 4.0 running guides on bottom, a 5600C4 and 12lb test.

Getting a tip top to match the tiny guides is an issue if your rod tip measures over about 3.9/64; however, I picked up a Forecast S600 UL blank at the show and was able to outfit it with a BFAT4.5(3.9) tip and some BLAG4 guides. The guides and the tip match up in size very well. This thing is going to be LIGHT. I will use it with a Shimano 750 size real and 4lb Fireline (1lb diameter) so the

I would not choose the SU1266 or 1267 for small blues and stripers - way too much stick.

For that I would definitely look at a steelhead blank. I don't know exactly how much weight he wants to throw, but the Rainshadow 1264 is a really nice blank. The steelhead blank is also going to be lighter in the hand than the surf blank and the fight from the fish will be more fun. What length rod? Conventional or spinning? Throwing what kind of tackle?

I think that generally the surf blanks is going to have more gutts and be designed for harder casts with the same weight. In other words, I think that a steelhead blank rated for 2oz will not be as heavily constructed as a surf blank rated for 2oz. What kind of surf fishing are you looking to do? Where I live the surf and the fish are both generally light so I build almost all of my surf rods

I often cut really narrow strips of masking tape to hold gudes on until I get the wrap started; but I have never worked with anything smaller than a size 6 in the past. Having gone to the show on Saturday, I now have the makings for 4 new sticks, all using size 3 or 4 running guides, so I guess I'll find out if I can cut the tape that small!

I looked at some of these blanks in the Swampland booth and really liked them, but are the specifications and prices for the blanks available anywhere online? I neglected to pick up one of the price lists they had available at the show.

Can you tell us what the blank was that you broke and how you broke it? I'm not asking you to do that in a spirit of criticism toward anybody's product; I'm just wondering if the blank selection wasn't appropriate to the task at hand. Or, if you are used to UL FW stuff (I share that infatuation), perhaps there is a technique issue in doing SW in the surf or from a boat. I have blanks from all

Do any of you fish much with 2lb mono, or the 1 to 2lb braid? If so, I would be curious which blanks work for line that light.

Do a google search on "mudhole allstar blanks". Sometimes an old catalogue page can still be found by the search and it might have the data you're looling for.

Tom, All that sounds great; but just to make sure I'm not being confusing - BUY all those guide sizes, but DON'T USE all those guide sizes. You will need different sizes at most to step down on a rod that size, and with braid I might even tweak the setup a bit to try and get away with two sizes before running guides. Even if you go with a BYAG25 for the first guide, you should need nor more th

The rule of thumb is that the first guide should be 0.5x the spool diameter and that the first running guide should be 27x the spool diameter away from the spool (e.g. a spool of 50mm in diameter would call for a 25 stripper and the first running guide would be 1350mm away from the face of the spool). Having said all that, guide heights and line path might change exactly what you use between t

So is everybody going to start taking shots at Mudhole as the Walmart of the rod building industry? Personally, I love the catalogues. I get a great look at what is available out there, especially since I don't live near a supplier where I can go handle things personally. Sometimes I order things from Mudhole, and when I do I get great service. Other times I order from numerous other sponsors

Double check on how the Recoils handle braid. I had a vendor tell me once they were susceptible to grooving so you might want to stay with SIC. You know Fuji makes LSG3.5s which would be really light. You might have to go with a 4 or 5 ring top, but I would think that would be even lighter. One more thing, I would think you could step your guides down more quickly; say 25, 16/12 then running,

I have had this problem with multiple decals, but I think the following solve the problem (when I do them right!). 1 - apply the waterslide and let it dry 2 - use THIN coats of finish, brushed on lengthwise; better numerous thin coats than one thick wavy one 3 - don't use heat - it thins, ripples, then "kicks" before it can flow back out 4 - the first few times you turn, brush your

I'm doing my tactical planning on which boothes to hit first. I figure it's stand in line, run in, buy blanks, then components, then pick brains and attend seminars the rest of the day to figure out how to build it all out. I feel like my wife planning for a consignment sale.
