So do I understand correctly that in float and drift fishing, you are not really doing a lot of casting so much as you are paying out line and maintaining the proper drift?

I gather that the two are not the same. What characteristics make a blank good for one or the other? How do these blanks work for light inshore/surf action with light lures and bait?

I just ordered one of these sight-unseen and like what arrived, but am trying to figure what it is best suited for. I get the impression it is designed for "drift fishing" or as a "float rod", and where I live nobody does either of those things. The blank seems pretty stiff in the butt but softens up a lot in the tip (it is only 5/64 at the tip). How suited is this blank fo

Setting this up to be a light surf stick. Would your first guide be a 25 or 20? I will be matching it to an ABU 5000 but may occasionally use a 6500 on it.

I just ordered one of these on clearance and wanted to go ahead and order my grips and stuff, but I don't know the ID I need for about 24" up the blank. I plan to use split EVA grips below the seat and another grip above the seat. Also, anybody know the tip size - 5 or 5.5?

My stripper guide is usually at about 30" on my fly rods so I do have the stripper on the butt section of a 3pc. In fact, on a 9' 5wt I recently build, both my stripper and tamer guides are on the butt section.

I like the Rod Bond. It gives you time to work. I take one of the plastic spoons I have used to mix it and press the Rod Bond repeatedly into the opening to create a plug extending up into the blank, then wipe with the underside of the spoon to leave a slightly concave indention in the plug (as I read this I realize I've put way too much thought into it!). Once I clean the outside of the ferru

Ken, I'm posting this here as well as sending an e-mail just to try and make sure I reach you. I know you build a lot of 1264s and was wondering what your butt length was on a spinning rod for a guy about your size (I met you briefly in Charlotte). I did an initial guide setup and your general rule of a BSVLG40 at 28 inches seems to be right on for the reel I’m using (you do mean the regul

So it's regular nickle silver blackened on the outside, and not a modified alloy that is a different color throughout? Related question - is Titanium Carbide about the same color as the black NS?

I need one of these to match a Struble black nickle silver winding and don't want to pay more for shipping than for the butt plug. Can anybody help me out?

I got many of my components the other day to start a Rainshadow SU1264 for my brother in law. It will be set up for spinning with split EVA grips - one piece at end of butt, one just below reel seat and one just above real seat. How long do you make each of these pieces for both aesthetics and function? The one at the bottom will obviously be used in the cast and the one at the very top if fig

I'm going on a trip next week, guided fly fishing, and want to take a rod I am building. However, I will not get the components until this week so I will not have time to do it and let the epoxy finish cure. Would it work to do the static and casting tests, wrap the guides on and glue the thread with a coat of color preserver, then take the guides back off and rewrap and finish with epoxy after

I was just wondering what butt length different folks use on this rod. I know that some like "full extension", but don't know if that will be necessary on one this light. How do ya'll set one up for spinning?

What would you use and how would you set it up? He wants it about 10', 2pc for transport and usually fishes bloodworms with a 2 or 3 oz pyramid sinker. He always fishes a spinning real so it needs to be spinning. He's paying for the parts and said he will go up to $150.

Would this give any benefit in keeping weight down on a 5wt, or am I really trying to work this too hard?

Not asking the fastest action necessarily, but who makes the most crisp and quickly dampening blank? Assume it is built well with short wraps, light finish and good components.

Joe K. showed me how to sign a rod with gel pens in Charlotte and I did my first yesterday. The inscription came out great but I had trouble with the 2 inch wide coat of epoxy on top of it. How do you get a 2+ inch wide inscription to be fairly level?

A buddy and I are going on a two day guided trip in early April. It will be a float trip primarily for trout, maybe some smallmouth but I'm not sure. How much should we tip the guide per day or for two days? I know you may consider performance some, but what's the range? Do you consider percentage of the cost for the trip or so much per day? Maybe so much per fish!

What do you do if you are using gel pens to sign and label your rod? Do you just wait a certain amount of time for drying then epoxy right over, or do you do something else?

Can I use acetone for cleaning a blank off before wrapping? For cleaning up excess epoxy? I've been using denatured alcohol but need to pick up some acetone for thinning the flexcoat and was wondering if the acetone could do double duty. I know not to try using it in the alcohol burner!

Not that I've ever experienced this, but it would seem that crack cocaine and caffeine are only the second and third most quickly forming addictions.

Or make everybody spine a rod to get in. Probably be like "crossed or uncrossed" with scissors to the folk who've never done it.
