My stripper guide is usually at about 30" on my fly rods so I do have the stripper on the butt section of a 3pc. In fact, on a 9' 5wt I recently build, both my stripper and tamer guides are on the butt section.

I would also try to situate the stripping guide about 30 inches from the rod butt. This is assuming a normal arrangement of a 5 inch reel seat and 7 inch grip, or thereabouts.

If it falls within an inch of the ferrule, I'd move it up onto the ferrule and integrate it with your ferrule reinforcement wrap.
