All very good tips. I am the type of person that would indeed think of alternate uses........and thus try it on a rod. Sooooo....all good information. Good stuff.

I use Fuji Alconite BLAG #6 blank single foot guides on my 6' 2wt rods. Don't know the weight comparison...but I didn't get any sense that they were too big...like you are saying.

I think would use a broken arrow from a friend or a local archery club. Or, a cheap new arrow from Wal Mart as a test stick. Maybe $1.75?

I agree with Mr. Viburs. Suggest you consider a two hander. Not as hard on the shoulders. Perfect timeing. Albright has 13', 14', and a 15' two handed rod on sale. You can purchase either one of the three for $80. Perhaps the 8/9 with their GP reel.....I have no stake in Albright at all. But I don't think you can buy components and build a single hand rod for $80. These are "two handed&quo

Totally agree with the Trion suggestion. You can find them on troutlet.com for $112 for all sizes but the biggest, which is $132 Never done this before. Hope it is ok to post a link to a non-sponsor. If not, please remove it, or if someone informs me I will edit it out. oh...the Albright closeout reel probably work too. $80. Jim

Well, I find it interesting to me. After reading this...I am going to give the twin pack of Armor All with pads I bought...give them away. People above stated it ruined some lines. I never heard that before. I put my faith in you guys. In the round file it goes. Jim sorry I butted in

very interesting comments. I have been recommended Armor All a few times. I have read about Armor All working quite well. My 80 yr old friend, grew up fly fishing and has all his life, all over the world...says use it. He has used it for so long he can't remember. Apparently it never has damaged any of his lines. He has been fly fishing since single digit age. Grew up on Henry's Fork of the Snake

I use small single foot ceramics on my fly rods. But, don't know what to put on a 12 wt rod. Wonder if weight is an issue. I thought the lightweight wire guides were better than ceramics when wanting to hold weight down. Jim

I have some graphite rings, and aluminum rings I purchased from Jann's Netcraft. I like them both. The graphinte have no give to them. But being on cork, which DOES have give to it, I think they would work just fine. However I have a Pfleuger Trion and the graphite ring does not completely go on it and set all that well, while the aluminium one, which has some flex in it, fits for the Trion nicel

if you are not into looks....as I am not.........you can tie on a single foot guide for the tip top. You get to pick the size of guide ring you want, and do not have to match the diameter of a hole to the blank. You do not use glue you have to melt, and you do not have to heat it, and it will not come loose and move in hot weather....because you tie it on with a thread wrap.....like all the other

Why would black be the most stealth? Doesn't fit the definition of camouflage. What if the sky above and behind you is beautiul blue? Also, I don't think fish see black sky, or blue sky. When I used to swim as a kid and looked up from under water I saw a mirror finish on the surface? Black will probably cast a better shadow on the water than any other color. Jim

Geeeze guys. He simply asked for information. HE has heard things. He is simply asking the many many readers and rod builders on here if they know of, or have heard of any bad guides. I would ask that question about anything in rod building. From glue turning yellow, to bad thread, to color permanence to what ever. He just asked a question. He politely did not mention a guide and affect it's repu

The weight of the penny used in the CCS system was printed. It does not take a rocket scientist to convert to ounces or grams and do your own thing. The quantity of pennies for each given deflection is supposed to be constant in the first place....using all the same weight pennies. I purchased and use a small pocket scale from Harbor Freight for $12 and it will weigh in ounces or grams. Just lik

I use slip rings and the length of cork I choose. Seven inch, ten inch, 12 inch, 13 inch....whatever. I can put on any length of cork I want. I am building a spey rod and putting on 24" of cork grip. With the slip rings I can slide the reel up and down and anchor it where ever it pleases me. Jim

I prefer balance at the middle of my grip, the middle finger, where it sits on the grip where I hold the rod while fishing. Balanced at this point. When walking, or hiking a couple of miles to get to water, the rod stays horizontal to the ground. Tip doesn't occasionally hit ground because it's tip heavy and my wrist gets tired of holding the tip up while hiking. Also while fishing on a boat, a

I had a bad reel seat on the end of a fly rod. A friend just cut it off. He then matched some graphite blank to the part of the rod already embedded in the cork grip. He did some things I am not sure of...but he just fitted a new piece of graphite back into the grip, inside the existing graphite rod. Then he made the arbors and mounted a new reel seat on it. He did this in just a matter of minute

Since this is an experimental play rod, not expecting distance, just something to play with, I might go ahead and use my normal guide set up, just to see how it works on the 3wt. I normally use Fuji Alconite BLAGj #8 for first stripper guide, then a 7, then a 7 tammer, then all 6's the rest of the way, Including the tip top......the tip would be the same single foot #6 as all the last running gu

Eric, Thank you very much for you help also. I re-read and see that you not only gave me guide sizes but some recommendations as well. Thanks a lot for that. Helps me out emensely. What are H&H guides? Hook and Hackle? Jim oh....in searching for guides...I have discovered what must be H&H. Hopkins and Holloway I think it was.

It is a single hand blank. NOT a spey blank. Probably not the wisest choice..but I already had the blank with no great need for it. So....decided to build it into a two hander....to have something extremely economical to play with......at trying to learn to spey cast, and two hand cast. Its' usefullness "may" be ok....or it may be a noodle for hanging on the wall only. I am ok with th

Hello, I am quite the rookie at building a rod. I am experimenting because I had an economical 10' three wt blank. So I do not want to get into arguments about line weight. I just want to have fun building and experimenting with it. I have had a professional rod repairman install a 12" cork grip with an added extension of another 12". So I have a 24" reel seat...or I think....b

For a fly rod.....With the rod balanced at the base of the high sign finger of my casting hand, with no line out and reel on....works for me. Carries easy for walking long distances, and I have no trouble casting with it that I know of. Works for me. I don't think an ounce or even 2 will matter much either way. Too far off and you get into the tip heavy or reel heavy area. I actually balance

I have nothing important to add. I was just going to suggest the finger nail polish as well. We used to use it when labeling things. We labeled things....indoor use.....for long term with a P-Touch machine and didn't want the tape ends to curl back. They usually do and in a short time as well. Like the next day. We used to coat them with the clear fingernail polish and cured the problem. I wasn'

I live in what is called the White Mountains of Arizona. So when you see a post about the White Mountains it is about the area around Show Low, AZ. Now if you go to azflyandtie.com and click on General Discussion and scroll down to the post "Browns in the Whites" you will see some nice browns. Those browns were caught I just a couple of weeks ago over the Thanksgiving holiday week

Terry, thanks for your information as well. More good info and learning for me. I would prefer the changing heads. I like to have a floater, a sink tip, an intermediate sink, and a full sink on my rods. The guide size is my concern. I am not sure anyone has picked up on it but I am not talking a typical wire snake size #6. The ceramic Fuji Alconite SF is a lot smaller. Hang one....I am going

Scott, Thank loads for the info. I am quite surprised I can use the Fuji Alconite Blag 6's. I thought the skagit and spey lines had much larger diameters. Appreciate the info. Especially the info on the line that works well with you 11" 4. I happen to have a 10' 4wt blank I intend to add a one foot extension and build it into a two hander...as well as a 10.5' five wt. So the info on the l
